  • Amazing display
  • Great all-around performance
  • External memory up to 1TB
  • Other Samsung devices you can pair up

Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra is a phone that is extremely good at everything. Although not specifically built for gaming, the phone runs all popular mobile releases without slowing down. Therefore, if you’re looking to get the best Samsung gaming phone, this is it. With the price of around $900, it’s a device worth considering.

The Galaxy Note 20 Ultra uses a Snapdragon 865 Plus processor, which is used by most mobile game devices. The chipset boasts a clock speed of up to 3.1 GHz, and the 12GB of RAM is more than enough. We were able to edit an entire 5-minute video with a game running in the background.

Storage-wise, Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra comes with 128GB of internal memory. However, you can use MicroSD cards of up to 1TB.

Another thing that puts Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra ahead in the race for the best gaming phone is its 6.9-inch Dynamic AMOLED display. It has a refresh rate of a variable 120Hz that can take your gaming experience to the next level. Also, the response rate of 240Hz comes in handy when you’re swiping up and down.

With a display screen like this, you may be worried about heating issues. But we experienced none when testing the phone. We were happy to see this as this wasn’t the case with the earlier versions of the Galaxy Note.

If you need more proof that Galaxy Note 20 Ultra is the best Samsung phone for gaming, just take a look at its 4,500mAh battery. Just keep in mind that it may not last as long as usual if you’re using advanced display features such as 120Hz or the S pen. Besides the USB-C option, you can charge the phone via wireless charging.

In terms of looks, the phone is relatively large. It’s noticeably taller and a little bit wider than the Galaxy Note 10+. If you’re playing horizontally, a phone this big can only be an advantage. However, it may be challenging to play with one hand if the game requires you to hold the device vertically.

Like some other good gaming phones, it doesn’t have a 3.5 headphone jack. Instead, Galaxy Note 20 Ultra supports Type-C earphones which is a trade-off.

Being an all-around device, it doesn’t come as a surprise that Galaxy Note 20 Ultra is also a great camera phone. The rear setup includes a 108MP primary camera, a 12MP 5x zoom camera, and a 12MP ultra-wide camera. On the front, there’s a 10MP selfie camera. Unlike some cheap gaming phones, the Note 20 Ultra lets you record video in 1080p, 4K, and 8K resolution. So if you are into streaming, all you need is a good tripod and you can have a decent setup for less than $1,000.

The Republic of Gamers line by Asus has brought us some of the best gaming laptops. But the brand also launched the ROG Phone aimed at mobile gamers. The initial device was just a solid attempt but the ROG Phone 3, priced at $1,000, is an entirely different story.

With a 3.1GHz Snapdragon 865 Plus chipset running inside, it offers the ultimate gaming experience. The device we tested came with 16GB of RAM, but there’s a 12GB model available as well. It comes with 512GB of storage, 491GB of which you can use out of the box.

No matter how much you throw at it, this ROG gaming phone has no trouble chewing through the tasks. Even with multiple apps and Google Chrome windows running simultaneously, it operates without any lags.

On the front, there’s a 6.59-inch AMOLED display with a fingerprint reader. Asus also improved the display to 144Hz refresh rate and 270Hz touch sampling. As a result, the touch latency has been halved to 25ms in comparison to the previous version. While distinctions like this one may not be noticeable by a typical smartphone user, gamers will love it.

The 6,000mAh battery is the same as in the previous ROG smartphone, but it’s still colossal. You can game for hours without running to a charger. But even if your battery goes low, there’s a charging port on the side that lets you charge while playing.

Asus has designed this phone specifically for gaming, and you can immediately tell by looking at it. Non-gamers probably won’t be fond of the RGB light at the back and the gaming features they’ll never use. That said, some users may not like that the third version of the Asus ROG gaming phone line is quite bulky.

The Asus ROG Phone 3 can get quite hot when you use it for gaming. Asus has decided to address this issue by designing a unique cooling fan accessory that keeps the device temperature in a comfortable range. The gadget doubles as a stand. But there’s more. Since the phone doesn’t have a 3.5mm jack for plugging in your headphones, you can find it on the cooling fan accessory.

The ROG 3 is the best Asus phone for gaming, so there isn’t much focus on photography features.  However, Asus expanded its photographic suite by adding a 5MP macro camera to the rear. With the 64MP primary camera and 13MP ultra-wide camera, this is enough to take some pretty pictures. The 24MP front-facing camera works fine and adds quality blurring effects when taking portraits. However, if you’re really into photography, there are better camera phones out there.

  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 chipset
  • Amazing 6.55-inch AMOLED display
  • Well rated for dust and water resistance
  • Wireless charging

The OnePlus 9 takes the most loved OnePlus 8 features and puts them inside a new and improved device. The result is the brand’s best gaming phone so far. It’s available for around $700, which is a reasonable price considering how well it performs.

Although not explicitly designed for games, the OnePlus 9 does an excellent job. One of the reasons behind this is the Snapdragon 888, the chipset that powers some of the best new phones. The eight-core Kryo 680 CPU performs better and is more efficient than its predecessor.

The 8GB/128GB and 12GB/256GB RAM and storage combinations are the same as before; they’re on par with other phones in the same price range. However, it’s important to note that the phone doesn’t have expandable storage.

OnePlus didn’t change the formula when it comes to the screen. The 6.55-inch AMOLED 2400×1080 pixel display is still perfect for an android gaming phone. It even offers some exciting additional features. For example, if you want to save battery, you can kick the display down from 120Hz to 60Hz. The phone also does this automatically when you’re not engaging in 120Hz content.

The phone is packed with 4,500mAh. It’s not the best we saw among gaming phones, but it’s still more than enough. The device comes with a USB-C cable and Warp Charge 65T battery charger. Unlike with the 8, you can charge the OnePlus 9 wirelessly.

The phone looks like the last gaming cell phone from OnePlus, aside from the different camera block. Also, the frame is now made from plastic instead of metal. Another thing that stands out is that the new phone is much better rated for dust and water resistance.

Without the 3.5mm audio jack, you need a good set of USB-C headphones for the ultimate mobile gaming experience. You can even cut the cord with the wireless earbuds from OnePlus, which provides an exceptional audio experience.

Cameras are the Achilles’ heel for many gaming smartphones, which was the case with the previous versions of OnePlus. But things have changed with the 9. It’s not a device we would recommend to professionals, but it’s a great choice if you want to take some decent pictures. There’s a three-camera setup on the backside, but you only use two of them – the 48MP primary camera and 50MP ultra-wide camera. The 2MP monochrome sensor is there only to help with low-light and black-and-white photography.

Xiaomi was one of the first brands to create a phone for gamers. The first two generations of the Black Shark impressed us, and the new version lives up to the expectations. It’s a true gaming beast for only around $500.

Most of the top gaming phones won’t outdo Black Shark 3 in terms of specs. It arrives with the 3.1GHz Snapdragon 865 processor, which you’ll likely find in all top phones in the class. RAM-wise, the phone comes with either 8GB or 12GB. The storage is 128GB or 256GB. Unfortunately, there’s no expandable memory slot, but the internal memory should be enough to make gamers take notice.

The phone’s 6.67-inch AMOLED screen is on the large side. The screen resolution is 1080×2400 (or 2K), which isn’t the best, but it still looks excellent.

Under the hood of this gaming smartphone is a 4,720mAh dual-cell battery. If you’re a moderate user, you can expect the battery to last for more than one day. We subjected the battery to hours of testing with Mario Kart Tour and still had 50% left.

From the front, Black Shark 3 looks like any other phone. But the back shows that it’s aimed at gamers. It has a big X-shaped antenna that ensures your Wi-Fi connection stays strong even when you’re holding the phone with both hands. Also, the gaming RGB light adds even more to the look.

The Black Shark 3 doesn’t lack additional hardware to boost performance. First, there’s the FunCooler Pro fan. It clips onto the back of the phone and prevents this gaming Android phone from overheating. The fan doesn’t have a battery of its own, and you have to keep it plugged into a power source when using it.

Another accessory is the Gamepad 3. It’s a clip-on joystick with additional triggers to use when playing. Bear in mind that not all multiplayer games allow gadgets l to keep the game fair for touchscreen users.

It’s not uncommon for gaming phones to come without a 3.5mm audio jack, but this is not the case here. However, we didn’t like that there’s no wireless charging and serious water resistance.

The triple-lens camera isn’t the best in the class, but it lets you take some good-quality pictures. Since Black Shark 3 is designed to be the best phone for gaming, it’s no surprise that the cameras aren’t market-leading. There are a 64MP primary camera, 13MP wide-angle camera, and 5MP macro camera on the rear. The 20 MP selfie camera on the front also works well.

Although not necessarily a budget device, Black Shark 3 is very affordable considering how expensive some other options on the market are. You get fantastic value for your money, and there’s no doubt it’s one of the best phones for gaming you can find.

  • A13 Bionic CPU
  • Good battery life
  • Competitive price
  • VR sensors

When first released, the iPhone 11 was a big surprise. The phone packed better technology (mainly in terms of the camera) and processing power at a lower price than the iPhone XR. It’s a high-scoring phone in all departments, including gaming. It’s in the run for the best gaming phone around, with prices starting at $600.

The iPhone 11 comes with the A13 Bionic CPU, a massive upgrade over its predecessor. It’s the fastest mobile chip on today’s market. For example, it’s 30% faster than the one in the Samsung Galaxy Note 10+. With 4GB of RAM, the phone also has three internal storage options – 64GB, 128GB, and 256GB. Although there’s no support for expandable storage, you can use a device like SanDisk iXpand Flash Drive to create extra space.

Unlike PRO models, which have an OLED display, the iPhone 11 comes with an IPS liquid-crystal display. It sports a 5.94 display with a 60Hz refresh rate. With a resolution of 1792×828, the 11 is an excellent phone for gaming.

The five-watt charger comes with the phone, and one charging session can make the battery last for about 11 hours. It drops by about 15% for per hour of heavy gaming. It’s practically impossible to drain your battery on this iPhone if you’re a casual gamer. However, you could probably kill the battery in less time when running a game with screen brightness set on max.

In terms of design, Apple knows what it’s doing. Apple’s best phone for games so far is somewhat similar to the XR, but has a few new additions. For instance, the device is available in several new colors, including mint green, lilac, and light yellow.

The brand remained committed to its Lightning accessory: a 3.5mm headphone jack is nowhere to be found on the iPhone 11.

Developing games for Apple is both faster and less expensive compared to doing the same thing for Android. For Android, developers have to optimize their products for a gazillion devices with different chipsets and displays. Experts who design games for Apple have more time to fine-tune their products and ensure they work smoothly on all iPhones.

The iPhone 11 is also a great device to get if you’re into virtual reality mobile games. The iOS 11 is compatible with VR and already has all the motion sensors you need. All you need is an iPhone VR app, a VR headset, and you’re good to go.

Although it may not necessarily affect your gaming sessions, the camera is the standout feature of this phone. Apple doubled the number of lenses, meaning that the back of the iPhone 11 contains two 12MP sensors – the main one and ultra-wide one. There’s a 12MP selfie camera on the front as well. All cameras let you shoot in 1080p FullHD and 4K UHD.

  • Game Booster feature
  • Vapor Chamber Cooling
  • Quality display
  • A lot of power

Razer has produced some of the best gaming computers and accessories. The brand also has its own line of phones, and the latest Razer gaming phone is one of the best pickups available. You can find it for around $800.

The Razer Phone 2 is an absolute powerhouse. The Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 sits at 2.8GHz and comes with 8GB of RAM. But there’s more. You can overclock the device using its Game Booster feature. It bumps the frame rates while you’re playing. The phone has 8GB of RAM and only 64GB of storage, but there’s a MicroSD dedicated slot you can use. If you buy the Razer Phone 2 for gaming, you’ll probably need some sort of external storage.

The next feature is the “vapor chamber cooling”, which helps prevent the Razer cell phone from overheating when playing games. It’s the same cooling system Razer used for its Blade laptop. The best part of it is that it dissipates heat over the surface of the device so that the player doesn’t feel it.

The 5.7-inch LCD screen has a 120 Hz refresh rate, perfect for most games. The 16:9 aspect ratio does look a bit outdated compared to some OLED displays available. The original Razer smartphone had the 120Hz screen as well, but the number of games that support it has grown since then. This includes some big names like Pokemon Go, Fire Emblem Heroes, and Lineage 2: Revolution.

All that raw power comes with a price. The phone clocks out earlier than some other gaming devices. In the tests we ran, the 4,000mAh battery lasted just under 4 hours while streaming videos over Wi-Fi with screen brightness set to maximum. Luckily, the phone supports fast charging, so you can juice it up quickly. There’s also an option to charge the device wirelessly. Due to the short lifespan of the battery, you might want to consider getting a power bank alongside the phone.

The Razer Phone 2 has a distinctive design, quite similar to the previous Razer android phone. It’s thick and rectangular with a fully customizable RGB Razer logo on the back, which gives the phone its gamer aesthetics.

There are no ports on either side of the phone, but there is a USB-C for charging and headphones on the bottom. The phone lacks the 3.5mm audio jack but there’s a 24-bit DAC headphone dongle.

The camera setup on the rear consists of the 12MP primary sensor and another 12MP telephoto sensor with 2x zoom. The 8MP front camera delivers reasonable performance when it comes to taking selfies. The phone lets you record in 4K at 30 fps. Overall, the camera on this Razer mobile device could be better, considering how much you’re paying. But that’s not why you’d choose this phone in the first place.

  • Affordable
  • PC-like look
  • Expandable storage
  • 144Hz refresh rate display

The Nubia Red Magic 5G belongs to a small fraction of cell phones explicitly designed for gamers. Although it lags behind the competition in some general categories, it’s an ideal gaming device available at just around $550.

The Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 chipset lets it compete with other top gaming phones. It comes in two forms: the standard 8GB/128GB and the upgraded 12GB/256GB version. If neither option suits your storage needs, you can expand it with a MicroSD card.

On the front of the device, there’s a 6.65-inch AMOLED display. What’s unique about this phone is that it was the first one to get a 144Hz smartphone screen in the world. With a refresh rate that high and some additional features, this Red Magic gaming phone is a perfect choice for gamers. The display takes aiming in games such as PUBG Mobile to the next level. Also, the folks at ZTE have managed to shrink the entire device down compared to the previous version while keeping the same screen size.

The battery has a capacity of 4,500 mAh. If you use the device with the default 144Hz refresh rate, the battery may not last as long as you’d want. However, if you switch over to 60Hz, you’ll get to play significantly longer.

In terms of design, the phone borrows a lot from the modern gaming PC aesthetic. There are plenty of breathing LED lights and some Red Magic branding. It comes in three versions – black, red, and teal – all of which have a large X across the back.

Unlike some other good gaming phones, Nubia Red Magic 5G has a 3.5mm headphone jack and a USB-C charging port. The right side of the device has two capacitive buttons, especially for gaming. Also, the Gorilla Glass body helps it withstand any minor drops. Our only issue with the design is the lack of water and dust protection.

A triple camera stack is located right in the middle of the back. The primary lens has 64MP, the ultra-wide lens with 8MP, and there is a 2MP macro lens. The selfie camera is 8MP. The camera software feels slightly cluttered with options that don’t add much to photos and videos. While the camera is pretty great for a cheap gaming phone, you might want to get a different phone if excellent photography features are a must.

How To Choose the Best Gaming Phone

Deciding on which phone to buy isn’t easy, especially when you plan to use it for gaming. New phones with better optimizations and performances are released every month. The big question is: how do you find a phone that suits your gaming tastes? And what exactly makes a good gaming phone?

Standard smartphones generally can’t run the top mobile games. Even if they can, games tend to get laggy and drain the battery quickly. When choosing the best phone for gaming, there are so many things you have to take into account. A suitable gaming device has powerful hardware and software that can deliver a smooth and immersive gaming experience.

This doesn’t mean you can just pick the phone with the best processing chipset: other features play equally important roles. Here are a few things you might want to check before making a purchase.

Processing

One of the first things to look for is the best phone processor. Although it’s not the only feature you should focus on, you need to know how powerful the phone is. If it doesn’t have the amount of processing speed required, chances are you’ll experience malfunctions during your gaming sessions.

Manufacturers such as Qualcomm make chipsets for gaming phones. They are packed with power and can run all the new gaming releases. If you want peak performance from your next phone, it’s a good idea to stay up-to-date with what’s happening in the gaming chipset market.

RAM

You also want to look for a lot of RAM. The amount of RAM determines your gaming experience – the more, the merrier. RAM is responsible for the phone’s data transfer speed, and games with high-end graphics come with huge files that need transferring.

Devices that don’t necessarily focus on gaming often have between 4GB and 8GB of RAM. 4GB  is good enough for casual gaming, but you’ll want more if you’re buying a phone specifically for gaming. Phones with 6GB or 8GB are some excellent options, but manufacturers have recently been releasing top-notch 12GB devices: true gaming beasts.

Display

The best phone for gaming needs a big display to enjoy the top-notch graphics from many popular mobile games. Quite often, max graphics settings on a large display can give you an advantage over your opponents when playing online. For example, in Clash of Clans (COC), attacking the opponent is much easier when you have a better view of their village.

Another thing to look out for is the different refresh rates. Some smartphones boast refresh rates of 90Hz, while some go as high as 144Hz.

Some new devices have flexible displays that can fold, which allows you can expand the screen. If you’re a Fortnite or PUBG Mobile player, this feature can come in handy.

Storage

If you’ve ever played games on your computer, you know how important storage is. The same goes for mobile gaming. If you want to find the best gaming cell phone, you need to find one with plenty of room for your games.

The mobile gaming sector is constantly growing, and new games come with even larger files. By increasing the amount of space on your mobile device, you can play them without any issues. Phones are pretty diverse in terms of storage. Some have enough internal memory, while some have a slot for an external microSD card.

Battery

A phone can boast all the top gaming features, but you won’t get to enjoy it if the battery life is short. Because of the chipsets, high RAM, and other gaming aspects, gaming smartphones consume more power. While you can play while your device is plugged in, the whole point of having a gaming phone is being able to play on the go.

Phones aimed at gamers often have batteries with over 4,000mAh, which should be enough to let you play without tension. However, the battery life depends on all sorts of features, so it usually differs on a case-by-case basis.

Accessories

Suitable gaming accessories can save you from all sorts of things: a dying battery, poor audio, or inadequate controls. With cloud-based streaming platforms constantly growing, these extras can make or break your gaming experience.

The best phone for gaming is compatible with various devices you can connect via Bluetooth or USB-C. Therefore, when shopping for a gaming phone, you should look for one that offers suitable external devices.

Wrap Up

There are hundreds of gaming phones on the market. Unfortunately, not all of them are the gaming powerhouses the manufacturers say they are. That’s why it’s important to know what features you need to look at when choosing a new device.

No matter what your budget is, this guide should point you in the right direction. It simplifies the nuances of mobile gaming hardware. There are good options available in all price ranges, and it’s all about finding the best phone for gaming that fits your personal needs.

In case your phone isn’t the only device you play on, here are some helpful reviews:
