How We Test Website Builders
First, let’s take a look at how we selected the top website builders out there.
- We went through over 20 professional website builder reviews, compiling a list of 35 worthy pretenders.
- To narrow our search, we looked up user reviews and removed software with too poor or scarce feedback. That left us with a list of 12 website builders.
- We registered on each of the 12 platforms.
- Then we set out to design a website and get a feel for the platform.
- To get the full experience, we made sure to add a variety of blocks, arrange them in different configurations and play around with settings, colors, new page creation, etc.
- In a nutshell, we tested everything you might use while setting up your own website.
- We removed 1 of the platforms, as it was hard to navigate and laggy.
- Two more had to go as well, as the features they offered weren’t up to par with the others. That left us with 7 website builders.
- Then, it was time to test the support. We asked an average of 3 questions with varying difficulty and monitored the speed and quality of the replies.
- We also made sure to check the performance of the builders. To do that, we looked up lists with functioning websites, based on each platform.
- Then, we selected 5 at random and tested them with GTmetrix. This allowed us to determine the average performance of each platform.
- After that, we compared the prices and features each website builder offered.
- Finally, we ranked the website builders, based on the information we had collected, to create a list of the 7 best ones.
Versatile and very customizable
Vast variety of available integrations
The highly intuitive interface, design freedom, and 300+ app integrations make Wix a top choice. It comes with a built-in SEO tool, an amazing 99.9% uptime, and excellent loading speeds. Furthermore, the company’s website offers an extensive knowledge base that can guide you through your journey. On top of that, you can create your website with Wix for free.
Wix was created by Avishai Abrahami, Nadav Abrahami, and Giora Kaplan. They came up with the concept while working on the website for another start-up idea. After struggling to achieve the results they wanted, they decided that there needed to be a platform where people could build their own website without coding and design knowledge.
That’s how, in 2016, Wix was born. Today, it’s one of the best-known brands. Its versatility and intuitive design ensure its place in all website builder reviews.
Worldwide, over 150 million people in 190 countries have chosen Wix.
Ease of use
When it comes to ease of use, Wix takes the cake. The platform is very intuitive – so much so, in fact, that even shortcuts like ctrl+z and the delete button can be used to edit your page.
Wix is a drag and drop website builder. That means you can easily rearrange blocks and add new ones to your page. There are even lines, guiding you to the center of the screen or the edges of other elements. That ensures a good-looking and well-arranged website.
Changing colors, shapes and fonts is also very intuitive. You have a variety of blocks, so you can create almost anything you want.
If you’ve never built a website before, Wix is definitely a wise choice. It will save you a lot of time, as there’s not much of a learning curve.
Wix boasts a huge number of templates. Currently, there are over 650 in 17 different categories and plenty of them are free. This can also be considered a disadvantage, as it’s easy to get lost in the vast amount of options in this website builder.
As everything is customizable, you’re one poor color choice away from creating a hideous website. However, if you know what you’re doing, you can have the exact web page you imagined.
You should keep in mind that once you publish your website, you’ll be stuck with the template you chose. It’s well worth it in the end, though – the templates all look modern and are highly customizable.
One of the reasons to consider Wix is all the amazing features.
First of all, and we can’t stress this enough, the interface of the editor is extremely intuitive. Not only is Wix a drag and drop website builder, you can tweak every block to look whichever way you want it to.
If you’re not in the mood to design a website, you can opt for the Wix ADI. It is an artificial intelligence module that designs a basic, but quite decent website for you – with zero design talent or skill on your part.
The platform also has a great SEO tool (the magical Wix SEO Wiz) that helps you make your website discoverable on Google. That makes this website builder one of the best for small businesses. Even if you can’t invest in a professionally built web page, you can still make sure people find it online.
Another amazing feature is Corvid – the open development platform you can use to build web applications.
So whatever you need, pretty sure Wix has got it.
Great integrations are vital to ensure Wix’s spot among the best website builders.
Luckily, Wix has over 300 apps you can choose from. However, only about 70 of those are actually free.
It can get quite expensive to scale your website as your business grows. It’s key to make sure your investment into some of the more costly apps will be worth it.
The feature we mentioned above – Corvit, gives you the tools to create the software you need but can’t find in the website builder. However, this is definitely not easy and you will need to splurge on a developer.
First of all, Wix guarantees an amazing 99.9% uptime. Reliability shouldn’t be underestimated. After all, even if you have the best website, it’ll make no difference if it’s down.
So what does that result in?
Amazing loading times! The average TTFB (time to first byte) on the randomly selected websites we tested was the stunning 183 ms. The onload time was 2.2 seconds.
When it comes to customer support, Wix doesn’t make it easy to contact an advisor. On the bright side, their comprehensive knowledge base ensures you’ll rarely need one.
When you navigate to the support contact page, you have two choices.
You can either submit a ticket or request a callback.
Our experience with support was very positive – we chose to submit a ticket and received a comprehensive response in less than an hour. Being able to talk to an actual person is also a great option that’s not all that common.
The reviews on Trustpilot are far from good. Only 37% of reviewers found Wix excellent or great and 59% considered it bad or poor.
Most of the customers shared they were unfairly billed by Wix. So if you decide to build your website on this platform, keep an eye on the invoices they send. Other people have complained about the functionality of Wix Payments.
However, we encountered no issues with the platform. Naturally, a lot of customers enjoyed Wix.
The positive reviews all agreed that Wix is an easy website builder with versatile functions.
If you’re looking for a free platform, Wix is a great option.
You can create an account, set up your website, and publish it without spending a dime. Naturally, your domain won’t be presentable and you won’t have access to some functions, but still, it’s free and it’s online.
In case you like the platform and are ready to invest, here’s what your yearly plan options are:
- Free – You’ll have a website, but no domain and your page won’t be discoverable by Google.
- Combo – It’s great for personal use. You also get a free domain for 1 year – $13 per month
- Unlimited – This option is suitable for freelancers and entrepreneurs – $17 per month
- Pro – Comes with a bunch of apps to boost your business – $22 per month
- VIP – You get everything in the Pro plan plus VIP support and priority response – $39 per month
For Business and eCommerce, your plan options include:
- Business Basic – You will be able to process payments from your customers (Wix takes no commission) – $23 per month
- Business Unlimited – You’ll get more storage and professional logos in addition to the Basic plan – $27 per month
- Business VIP – Once again, you’ll be paying for faster support – $49 per month
- Enterprise – Wix will provide a team of professionals to manage your website – $500 per month
A very important thing to note – the prices above are for a yearly plan paid in full at the time of purchase. Also, they don’t include VAT. So make sure to check the final price before you pay.
Wix may not be the cheapest website builder out there, but it’s well worth it.
Excellent 24/7 support
Reasonably priced plans
The intuitive interface, amazing support, cheap prices, and beautiful designs make Ucraft an excellent choice. The platform’s ease of use makes it especially suitable for beginners who can choose between 80+ designs. On top of that, the platform has a perfect 100% uptime, and the company offers top-notch support to its clients.
Ucraft is a relatively new company. It was founded in 2014 by the creators of Bang2Joom, the Joomla powerhouse. Their goal was to create an easy website creation platform for people to promote their businesses.
Today, Ucraft has over 145 thousand active users around the globe. More than 100 professionals work in the company and there are offices in three locations – the US, Armenia, and Russia.
In 2016, Ucraft came up with White Label. It allows companies to start their own professional website builders, based on the platform.
Ease of use
Ucraft is considered one of the top website builders for a reason. It’s highly intuitive and you will have no difficulties building your website if you’re moderately tech-savvy.
However, what makes this platform especially suitable for beginners is the Progress guide. You’ll see all the elements a simple website needs to have (and some optional ones). By clicking on the feature you’d like to add or modify, you’ll get a short video tutorial on how to do so.
Changing the size or place of a block is as easy as it sounds. If you’re looking for a simple website builder, Ucraft is a great choice.
Ucraft may not have the vast amounts of templates that Wix does.
However, the 80+ designs you can choose from are more than enough. They’re stylish and versatile – unless you have a very specific template in mind, Ucraft will definitely have what you need.
Another great thing about this website builder is that you can switch templates even after publishing your site. Ucraft will adapt to your changing business needs.
To make sure your website looks great on all devices, you can shift the view from a desktop to a tablet or a phone. This way you can reach a wider audience and know that you’re providing all with the same experience.
Ucraft also gives you access to over a million royalty-free curated icons, so you’ll definitely find what you need.
Considering that Ucraft is one of the cheapest website builders on the market, there’s a surprising choice of great features on the platform.
For example, there’s the Logo Maker. It’s free and you don’t need any design experience to create your logo. Naturally, don’t expect Michelangelo-level results. However, it will be more than enough for your homemade pickles business.
Ucraft has also integrated Unsplash into the platform. So if you need a photo, you can find a royalty-free one in seconds. With over 2 million images to choose from, we’re certain you’ll find what you need.
There are over 100 predefined blocks on this website maker to make your page look and feel in the best possible way! You can use ready-made sliders, footers, “about us” blocks, along with an FAQ, contact form, and a testimonial box. Just dive into the library and choose the design you like.
This is one of the categories you may find Ucraft lacking. It’s also why this website builder is often left out in reviews.
Currently, you can only choose from 17 integrations. They’re mostly different chat support software products.
However, keep in mind that Ucraft’s only been around for a couple of years. Hopefully, as the company grows, we’ll see the number of integrations multiplying!
Speed is another weakness Ucraft has.
All of the websites we tested were much slower than those built on different platforms. The average time to first byte was 765ms, more than 50% over the recommended speed.
Onload times weren’t good either. The average came up at 4.3 seconds – almost twice the time it took for a Wix site to load.
However, Ucraft is extremely reliable when it comes to uptime. While they don’t guarantee an exact percentage, there’s a webpage where you can monitor the status of Ucraft’s services over the years. The uptime percentage is consistently 100%.
Still, in comparison to any other website builder on this list, Ucraft has a lot of room for improvement.
Ucraft has the best support from all of the website builders we tried.
While, admittedly, this platform’s knowledge base is not too thorough, their agents make up for any gaps. You can also find some answers in the FAQ section.
The only way to contact Ucraft is via chat. After all, it’s the most popular channel – faster than email and less demanding than a phone call.
There’s someone online to answer your question 24/7. You can request their assistance by simply clicking on the icon on the bottom right corner – it’s there all the time while you’re building your website.
When you send your inquiry, a bot tries to offer a couple of help pages (not too helpful, as the articles are very general). It also warns you the team might take a couple of hours to respond.
However, we discovered that a reply could come as quickly as 2 minutes later. And it will be a thorough and personal reply. Well, harder questions took them up to 45 minutes, but still, it’s an extremely reasonable time frame.
Another cool touch is that you may need to allow them to access your website if you’d like them to fix something for you. That’s a very respectful approach to your personal data.
Ucraft definitely stands out amongst the other website creators in this regard!
Taking a look at the Trustpilot reviews of this website builder, we noticed that most users had the same awesome experience we did. In fact, Ucraft got 4.5 out of 5 stars!
A staggering 85% of people considered Ucraft great or excellent and only 12% found it poor or bad.
Users had the same amazing support experience as us. Additionally, they found the platform was easy to use.
However, what’s amazing is that their support team is actively reaching out to people that gave 1 or 2 stars. They’re trying to fix customers’ issues or explaining why users may have had trouble with the platform.
Overall, it seems that whatever Ucraft lacks in functionality, it makes up with its personal approach to each client!
Ucraft is one of the cheapest website builders out there, especially considering the value you get in return.
If you want to check out any of the plans, you can get a 14-day free trial without providing any payment information. Additionally, there’s a referral program that can get you another month for free.
So let’s check out the plans Ucraft offers – you’ll see the month-to-month cost in the brackets.
- Free – Yep, this website builder has a free plan and it even allows you to connect your own domain!
- Pro Website – This plan allows you to set up a shop with up to 50 products, with up to 100MB per file, if you’re selling digital goods – $10 (or $13 for a monthly subscription)
- Pro Shop – hoose this subscription for a bigger shop – up to 1000 products. The size limit of digital goods is increased to 1GB per file and you’ll also get a bunch of other data management options – $21 (or $24 for a monthly subscription)
- BigCommerce – You’ll have access to all the features available in Pro Shop. However, this plan allows you to have an unlimited number of products. The size of digital goods will also be increased to 10GB per file – $39 (or $42 for a monthly subscription)
Great 24/7 support
Easy export to WordPress.org
The most popular platform offers amazing support, great performance, and scalability. What makes WordPress a great choice is the vast amount of features, plugins, and themes you can choose from. Moreover, the platform is SEO-friendly and suitable for all kinds of websites, including eCommerce ones. The best part is, you can create a WordPress website for free.
WordPress.org, or open-source WordPress, is the most popular CMS. Currently, it powers 34% of the internet and is considered the professional alternative of a website builder.
In 2005, WordPress.com was created to make the platform accessible to all. The main difference being that WordPress.com is self-hosted (so you don’t need to look for third-party providers). It’s also simplified so that even non-techies can make it work.
The corporation behind it is Automattic – the same one associated with products like Tumblr, WooCommerce, Gravatar, and Akismet.
WordPress.com started out as an invitation-only service. However, it soon became available to the general public. Today it hosts over 15.5 billion pages and has more than 409 million monthly visitors.
Ease of use
When you begin using WordPress, you can tell that creators have tried to make the platform beginner-friendly. However, it still requires a certain level of tech-savviness to set up even a simple page.
While it does have some elements of drag and drop, it’s not really that intuitive. You may struggle to rearrange blocks on the page for a while before you get the hang of it.
You can choose to work with the classic or the new editor. They’re quite different and users have their preferences. However, we found the new editor much more straightforward.
WordPress is quite responsive and once you get used to the specifics of the software, you’ll enjoy this website builder. We can guarantee that it will be worth it.
WordPress boasts a serious collection of templates. Not only are there almost 300 of them, but they’re also quite versatile and you’ll surely find one that fits your business. The company has a group of dedicated people – the WordPress theme review team, that make sure all templates are up to par.
The great news is that more than half of them – 169, are free. While they may have some limits, they do not lack looks. To gain access to all templates in the WordPress website builder, you’ll need to upgrade to the Business plan.
The even better news is that you can search the themes by keywords to find one that suits your website. Not only that, but you can sort the results for the free or premium options. You’re also able to input requirements about features, layout, column, subject, and style.
In short, WordPress makes it easy for you to find the template you’ll need. Therefore, the huge selection of themes will not slow down the creation of your website, but you’ll have a choice of different designs.
It’s no wonder that major brands like Spotify, TED, and CBS choose WordPress.com for their content. The features, available in this website builder, are a big part of what makes it the best software on the market.
First of all, all the content is mobile-friendly, thanks to the responsive themes. Not only that, but you can also update your website and add content from your phone or tablet.
If you’re looking for free images, you can use the Pexels service. It’s built into the editor to save you time. Additionally, every photo you upload to your web page automatically comes with credits.
WordPress is very SEO-friendly. There’s a variety of tools you can take advantage of to bring more traffic to your website. You can also set up an automated social sharing so that your followers on Twitter, Facebook, and other social media can stay updated.
You’ll be able to see a lot of stats about your visitors. That includes their country of residence, interests and the time of day when they visit your page.
However, probably the best feature of them all is that you can export all of your content at any time. This is a significant advantage that WordPress has over website builders like Wix.
If you’re looking for integrations, WordPress has them.
This website builder’s library is impressive. There are over a thousand of custom plugins you can choose from.
In the unlikely event WordPress doesn’t have what you need, you can build it yourself. Well, at least technically speaking, as it’s not an easy task. However, as third-parties are welcome to submit their plugins, the library is constantly growing.
While this might make you think WordPress is the best DIY website builder of all time, there’s a catch.
You get the ability to install plugins only if you’re on the Business or eCommerce plan.
When it comes to WordPress.org, there are so many different plugins and platforms you can choose from that performance can be unpredictable.
However, WordPress.com is self-hosted, removing most of the variables from the equation. Thousands of servers in data centers around the world guarantee minimal outages if any at all. If your website happens to suddenly become popular, this platform would go so far as to relocate resources to make sure all is running smoothly.
While WordPress doesn’t guarantee an uptime percentage, you can expect around 99.8%.
Speed depends on a variety of factors – most notably, the template you choose, the number of images and videos, and the quality of plugins.
However, testing multiple sites confirmed that WordPress deserves its spot on our list.
The TTFB came to an average of 184 ms and the onload time – to 1.7s. Those are some amazing stats!
As WordPress is so immensely popular, website creators have access to a vast pool of knowledge.
While the help articles you’ll find on the platform aren’t all that comprehensive, you can find the answer to pretty much every question in the blog. There are also multiple tutorials online and different courses you can take to learn.
However, WordPress also has great support. And the best part – they’re available 24/7!
If you splurge on the Business plan, you can schedule a 1 on 1 screen share and talk with an agent, a so-called Happiness Engineer.
In case you’re a mere mortal, you can only reach out via chat. If nobody is available, you’ll receive an answer via email.
Still, after reaching out to their support several times, we were pleasantly surprised. The response took between 3 and 25 minutes, depending on the complexity of the issue. The agents were friendly, helpful, and quick with their solutions.
Another cool detail is that before you contact support, a bot will suggest some resources. Although it may be a bit impersonal, the articles and forum discussions it came up with actually answered our questions every time!
WordPress.com got an impressive 4 out of 5 stars on Trustpilot.
Only 9% found the platform poor or outright bad. However, a massive 79% consider it great or downright excellent.
We went through the reviews to learn more about customers’ experience. First of all, we noticed that WordPress agents took the time to troubleshoot some of the issues users encountered. Talk about great support!
Most of the negative reviews were either about WordPress.org or third-party plugins and hosting. So you should make sure to look into the best hosting options if you’re planning to take this route. Some mentioned unresponsive support – something quite different from our experience.
However, most users were very happy with WordPress and considered it one of the top website builders out there.
If you decide to go for a paid membership, you should keep in mind that WordPress offers only yearly subscriptions. The whole amount will be withdrawn in full once you go through the steps. However, you have 30 days to get a refund if you’re not satisfied with the service.
So, let’s go over the plans WordPress offers!
- Free – You can build your website and publish it to a WordPress subdomain.
- Personal – This plan allows you to connect your website to a custom domain and gives you access to faster support – $4 per month
- Premium – You’ll be able to use advanced design tools, custom CSS, and Google Analytics support – $8 per month
- Business – The Business plan allows you to install plugins. It also gives you access to a wider variety of themes, live support, and more storage – $25 per month
- eCommerce – This plan is suitable for online stores and grants you access to advanced eCommerce features – $45 per month

SITE123 comes with numerous built-in features, including SEO tools, social media integrations, and analytics tools. On top of that, the platform offers 99.98% uptime and optimizes your website to decrease the loading speed.
SITE123 was founded in 2015 by Noam Alloush. The goal was to make website building accessible to anyone.
Alloush actually worked in the industry for 15 years before coming up with the idea. He took into consideration millions of clients’ opinions and requests while designing his platform. This is why SITE123 is considered one of the most customer-oriented website builders.
In 2016, the platform was officially launched. It quickly became popular, as you won’t need to have knowledge of design or coding to create a beautiful page.
SITE123 aims to provide a top-notch website builder software possible. And, to guarantee that this is the case, the developers keep the platform regularly updated.
Ease of use
SITE123 is quite easy to use by website builder standards. The interface is not too intuitive, as you can’t drag and drop blocks to rearrange them. However, you soon get used to that and it significantly speeds up the creation process.

There are a few icons and options on the menu. While this may limit customizability, it certainly makes the platform easy to navigate.
SITE123 aims to allow users with no design skills to create a beautiful website. Therefore, the platform allows customization only within certain limits.
This website builder has a vast library of ready-made templates – over 180. All of them were designed by professionals and are admittedly very beautiful.
However, they are not really versatile. Still, you can change the way your site is arranged to make sure it fits your idea.

Additionally, SITE123 optimizes your website and helps it load faster. The average TTFB we got from testing came up to 174ms. The onload was 2.9 seconds. That’s a good score, especially for websites with a lot of images.
SITE123’s support is one of the best amongst website builders.
Once you create your account, you’ll even receive automated emails offering assistance. Their team is very proactive and answers all inquiries in a matter of minutes.
You can reach out via live chat or email. While you’re working on your website, you have quick access to support at the bottom right corner of the screen. They’re friendly and will lend you a hand if you’re having difficulties.
However, if you want to find an answer on your own, you may find their knowledge base is lacking. Still, the basics are there!
Customers definitely enjoyed SITE123! This platform has an almost perfect score on Trustpilot – the stellar 4.5 out of 5 stars!
An amazing 94% of users considered SITE123 excellent or great and only 3% – poor or bad.

Gorgeous templates with responsive design
A variety of tools to edit the website
Fast website creation
Squarespace’s fast support, affordable price, and easy navigation make it a great website builder for novices and small business owners. Still, the best selling point of the platform is the gorgeous templates. With Squarespace, you can create a breathtaking website, even if you have no previous experience in web design.
Squarespace was founded in 2003 by Anthony Casalena from his university dorm room. Today, the company boasts millions of websites and a team of over a thousand people!
The creators truly believe their website builder is one of the top options on the market. So much so, that their entire platform is powered by the same tools they’re offering their customers.
Still, a mother’s (or in this case a creator’s) opinion about her child isn’t the most objective one. So let’s dive in the deep and take a look at the strengths and weaknesses of Squarespace.
Ease of use
While Squarespace isn’t quite as intuitive as Wix, website creation is still pretty straightforward.
If you’re relatively tech-savvy, you’ll figure out the vast majority of features on your own. That’s also true for people with no experience in the field.
After you’ve opened your account and entered what your site will be about, the platform will suggest designs. That makes choosing a template much easier.
As is with most website builders, you can build your pages without coding. Squarespace is perfect if you’re just looking to choose a template, enter your content and go live.
Still, we’d recommend setting aside a few hours to get used to the platform.
Design is definitely Squarespace’s biggest strength.
It doesn’t have too many templates to choose from – right now there are 77 in 22 different families. One of the reasons is that third-parties can’t upload their designs to the platform.
Still, their extremely responsive support team clarified that they continue adding and retiring templates. The one constant is that all of them are stunning.
There are some limitations to design – for example, you can’t mix features from different templates. This ensures that your website will look consistent throughout. It’s also why you don’t need to be a designer to create a beautiful page.
However, if you really insist on it, there’s a way to achieve the look you’re striving for by utilizing different blocks.
So, rest assured that Squarespace is a great choice for beginner website creators.
The variety of cool features is a big part of why its users think Squarespace might be the best website builder.
For example, you have the Logo Maker. You don’t need to be a professional – just with a few clicks, you can create a stylish logo. You also get to download it for free, along with several variations.
The platform is also linked to Unsplash – a vast database of free stock images. Naturally, there’s a search bar, so that you can quickly find the photo you want.
Another cool feature is the picture editor. You can access some basic adjustments like brightness, contrast, saturation, etc. Once again, you won’t be able to make big changes, but that will serve to help you stay focused and achieve nice and fast results.
The automated image scaling can also be very useful. Of course, it’s not absolutely foolproof, but it does the job most of the time.
Probably the best feature is the variety of content blocks. You can find almost everything you’ll need – from buttons and video players to pie charts and sample menus. To rearrange them, you just need to drag and drop. It’s very intuitive and extremely efficient.
Squarespace, being the simple website builder that it is, tries to make things easy for you. Hence why all official integrations are built-in. That’s right – no need to scour a marketplace for the add-on you want.
There is a variety of apps to choose from. Everything from blocks to show the feed from social media to video integration, payment, and marketing tools.
While Squarespace doesn’t specifically prohibit third-party integrations, they’re pretty clear about not supporting them. Sure, that’s reasonable.
However, third-party integrations usually include either a “code injection” or advanced code in the Code Block. And if you want to have these features, you’ll need to splurge on the Business or Commerce plan.
Time for the geeks’ favorite part of our reviews – the website builder performance stats!
Squarespace performs satisfactory, especially for smaller websites (under 300 pages). The onload time is average – 3 seconds. Naturally, a lot of images and animations will slow up any website.
However, if you’re planning a big website (more than 500 pages), you should consider using a different platform.
Squarespace’s uptime is 99.96%, so it’s definitely a good choice in that regard. The average TTFB (Time to First Byte) of the websites we tested was also pretty good – 218ms.
Squarespace definitely was one of the better support experiences from the list.
You can reach out via email and chat – in our case, both were very responsive. Within 5 minutes the chat support agent answered our inquiry. It took a total of 10 minutes for a fully personalized response.
Their knowledge base is also quite helpful. You’ll find most of what you’re looking for there.
This is a big part of what makes Squarespace such a good web page builder for novices. You can even sign up for an online webinar to learn about the platform.
Lately, Squarespace’s reviews on Trustpilot have taken a dive. The current rating is the woeful 2 out of 5 stars. To put that in perspective, 51% of reviewers find the platform is “Bad” and only 31% think it’s “Excellent”.
While we agree that Squarespace may not be the best website maker for every business, 2 out of 5 stars seems undeservedly low.
Most complaints are about technical issues and bugs. Additionally, people are having difficulties with support – something quite surprising for us.
The positive reviews reflect our experience much more accurately – competent support, intuitive platform, and good results.
Squarespace, like most of its competitors, offers a free trial period. You get 14 days to get used to the platform, design your website and get a feel if you’d like to pay for their services.
Unlike Wix, you need to upgrade to a paid trial to publish your website. So if you’re looking to design a gag page for a friend – a free website builder will definitely be a better choice.
Keep in mind that the lower prices are based on a 1-year contract. You’ll see the actual month-to-month prices in the brackets. So, here are the plans Squarespace offers:
- Personal – A good solution if you don’t need an online store. You’ll get a low-tier domain, mobile optimization, and SEO – $12 (or $16 monthly)
- Business – That’s the cheapest option if you want a store. However, Squarespace will also charge you a 3% transaction fee – $18 (monthly – $26)
- Commerce Basic – You won’t be charged a transaction fee, your customers will be able to create accounts and you’ll get integrated accounting – $26 (monthly – $30)
- Commerce Advanced – This being the most expensive subscription, you’ll gain access to all Squarespace features, including advanced shipping, discounts, and gift cards – $40 (monthly – $46)

Good knowledge base
Great platform for beginners
Weebly offers an intuitive platform that’s great for beginners and small business owners. It allows you to manage your website via your smartphone, offers an integrated shopping cart, and optimizes your website for mobile phones. On top of that there are more than 350 free and paid integrations that can help you run an astonishing website.
Weebly was founded back in 2007 by Dave Rusenko, Chris Fanini, and Dan Veltri. Two of them studied at Penn State University that required an internet portfolio – that’s where the idea of Weebly was born.
The founders wanted to create software that allowed anyone to build a website and take their business online.
Now Weebly supports over 50 million sites around the world. The built-in tools ensure great mobile optimization, advanced analytics, along with shipping, taxes and inventory management.
The company’s headquarters are in San Francisco, but they’ve opened offices in New York, Scottsdale, and Toronto. In 2018, Weebly was acquired by Square.
Ease of use
Weebly is definitely a beginner-friendly platform. You can even visit their blog, the so-called Inspiration Center, for valuable tips on creating a good website.
When you create an account and begin designing your first website, you’ll also see the Setup Guide. Now, this may sound helpful but actually doesn’t offer a lot of insight. It consists of three steps:
- Design your website
- Select a domain
- Publish your website
The platform itself is very intuitive. However, it definitely isn’t the easiest website builder to navigate. So if you choose to create your website on Weebly, make sure to set aside time to get used to the platform.
However, a very cool design feature that makes your life easier is that you can copy whole blocks to other pages in your website.
Weebly doesn’t have the best choice of templates for a DIY website builder. Currently, there are 22 themes you can choose from, which doesn’t seem like much, compared to Wix’s 650+.
However, all templates on the platform are beautiful, responsive and optimized. And let’s be honest – your clients won’t really care which theme you chose, as long as it looks nice.
The blocks aren’t fully customizable – if you have experience with another web page builder, you might find this restricting. But don’t forget that Weebly’s goal is to help you create a website and start your business as soon as possible.
One of the best things about this website builder software is that you’re not stuck with the template you select. If you decide to update your site later on, you’re free to change the theme. So Weebly ensures your website will stay modern without having to migrate to a different platform.
Weebly tops all reviews as the top website builder for small business owners. The reason is all the amazing built-in features.
First of all, the mobile interface allows you to create and manage websites directly from your phone. This feature is especially useful for bloggers.
It also comes with an integrated shopping cart and it even tracks your inventory for you. If you’re offering digital items, you’ll be happy to hear Weebly has also thought of this option.
Online stores are SEO optimized and work on mobile. Speaking of SEO, there’s a thorough guide to take you through optimizing your website. So selling on the platform is as straightforward as can be.
When it comes to design, Weebly also has a couple of neat features. One of them is the built-in photo editor that even allows you to apply filters. You also have access to a photo library with both free and paid photos. Finally, there’s the option to create beautiful photo galleries and slideshows.
A good variety of apps is pretty much the standard for the website builders on our list. And Weebly is definitely up to par in this regard.
Currently, there are 370 apps, sorted in 5 general categories. Most of them are paid, but there are some free and several freemium options.
All in all, you can choose from about 50 apps if you don’t want to pay. Excluding video and audio, you’ll find a free option in every subcategory.
However, keep in mind that if the free integrations just don’t cut it for you, your costs may dramatically increase when you invest in apps.
Overall, Weebly’s performance was satisfactory.
After testing several websites, created on this website builder, we got an average TTFB of 177ms and onload time of 2.6 seconds.
Weebly’s uptime is 99.98%, which is also great.
So, when it comes to reliability, Weebly is a good choice.
Testing the support of a website builder is an important part of reviews.
However, we found it sadly lacking in Weebly’s case.
Where the knowledge base was great, we weren’t too impressed when it came to contacting their agents.
Technically, you have access to email, chat and phone support. Technically.
After multiple attempts to contact their chat support (which isn’t 24/7), we found that was impossible. Each time we tried to open a conversation, the system just went back to the main page.
Phone support is only an option if you’re already using Weebly’s plans. So you need to pay for at least the Pro subscription to have access to it.
Therefore, we could only contact email support. The response took about 12 hours and didn’t answer the question we asked. So, to get a reply to a simple question, we had to wait a full day.
Now, Weebly is a simple website builder and even beginners can generally make it work. Still, this doesn’t excuse the lack of support we faced.
The overall score on Trustpilot for Weebly is 3 out of 5 stars. We generally agree with that – not great, not terrible.
Most reviewers enjoyed Weebly. In fact, 51% found it excellent or great. However, 44% believed it to be poor or bad. Apparently, chances are you’ll either really like or really hate Weebly.
After going through the negative reviews, we noticed that most of the complaints were about support. One user mentioned that the shipping options were not great for small business owners.
Therefore, we suggest you figure out exactly what you need before choosing Weebly.
The great news for website creators is that Weebly has a free option. Of course, there will be an ad in the footer and you won’t get a normal domain if you don’t pay. Still, you can publish your website and get a feel for the platform.
So, let’s say you’ve decided Weebly is the perfect platform for you. What are your plan options? Let’s take a look. You’ll see the monthly price for yearly subscriptions and those for month-to-month payments.
- Free – You won’t be able to use a normal domain and there will be an ad footer.
- Connect – This plan will allow you to connect your website to a custom domain – $5 (or $8 monthly)
- Pro – You’ll be able to list up to 25 items for sale and get phone support – $12 (or $18 monthly)
- Business – This plan allows you to list unlimited items and accept payments through Paypal – $25 (or $35 monthly)
- Business Plus – You’ll get access to advanced ecommerce tools like abandoned cart emails, a tool that calculates shipping rates in real-time and priority support – $38 (or $46 monthly)
If you’re hesitant to splurge on the business plus plan, we get it. However, keep in mind that even simple tools like abandoned cart emails can make a big difference. After all, email marketing is one of the best ways to bring customers to your page.
Still, it’s not like there aren’t other options on the market. If you’re interested in email marketing, we suggest investing in software designed for that very purpose.
Beginner friendly platform
Free and versatile templates
Duda is an easy-to-use platform that offers more than 90 themes out of the box. You can also build your website from the ground up by using a blank template. On top of that, the platform offers numerous built-in features, like content import, duplicate pages, and a developer mode. Still, one of Duda’s best selling points is the outstanding 100% uptime.
Duda was founded in 2009 by Amir Glatt and Itai Sadan in California. The name is a reference to the great movie “The Big Lebowski”. The platform was named after the main character – The Dude. Employees are referred to as Dudes and Dudettes and we think that’s pretty awesome.
In the beginning, Duda focused on mobile websites. However, it eventually grew into one of the top website builders on the market.
Today, Duda works with thousands of agencies – currently, there are over 14 million websites on the platform. It clocks over 100 million monthly visits, is trusted by more than 450 thousand businesses and has 20+ industry awards.
Duda has offices in Palo Alto, Louisville, Tel Aviv, and London.
Ease of use
The layout of Duda is great. You have your tools on the left side of the page you’re editing, a navigation menu at the top and support on the right.
So, finding what you need in Duda won’t pose difficulty in most cases. As it’s a drag and drop website builder, creating the structure of your web page is very straightforward.
Changing photos is also made easy, as you can replace them without that influencing their size or shape. You can edit the colors of blocks from a simple drop-down menu.
It’s also great that you can switch back and forth between desktop, tablet and phone layout from the navigation bar.
Overall, it’s easy to get the hang of Duda and you’ll be able to create your own website relatively fast.
In comparison to platforms like Wix, this website builder doesn’t really have that many templates. All in all, there are 95 themes you can choose from.
However, they’re very versatile and the design is great. There are even some blank templates with a basic structure if you prefer to build your website from the ground up.
The platform is awesome when it comes to helping you find the correct theme for your purposes. You can search by color, keyword or category – there are 12 of those to guide you.
Before settling on a design you can even check out what your website will look on different devices.
Duda has some of the best features you can find in a DIY website builder!
First, there’s the developer mode. If you’re comfortable working with HTML and CSS, you’ll be able to gain more control over the platform.
Duda also allows you to edit your website by device. This way you won’t rely on the responsiveness of the website builder. You’ll be able to make sure your website looks great on desktop, tablet and phone alike.
To give you even more control over your website, you can choose from various navigation styles. You can also get a shrinking header, a great feature, especially for mobile users.
In case you’ve already created a website in another platform, you’ll like the content import feature. It allows you to easily transfer information between web pages. You can also duplicate pages to save you from creating the same layout again and again.
To further improve your experience, the interface supports copying and pasting elements. And you can edit your website through both desktop and mobile devices!
Overall, Duda has so many inbuilt features that it’s hard to list them all. However, it’s not unlikely to find most of what you’ll need without having to install plugins.
Speaking of plugins, let’s focus on what integrations are available for Duda.
Sadly, the answer is not many. Currently, there are only 26 addons available. And we know how much third-party software can contribute to website builder functionality.
There are five categories with several options in each – business and commerce, social, videos, location and marketing. While some of the most popular integrations, especially social, are available, there’s not much choice when it comes to marketing.
Considering this, we suggest taking a look at the list of integrations. Make sure they’ll satisfy your needs before you select Duda as your builder.
When it comes to speed, Duda’s performance is quite average.
Naturally, some of the websites we tested were fast. However, others were so slow that the average onload time came up at 3.3 seconds. The TTFB was better though – 171 ms.
So, keep in mind your Duda website can become quite heavy. If you make sure to monitor this and go easy on the animations and images, it should be fine.
However, the uptime percentage is amazing – technically, it scores 100%! Duda’s servers have never been down since it was created. Naturally, an incident can always happen, but so far uptime’s been excellent! So even if your website isn’t the fastest out there, you can sleep soundly knowing it’s online and taking orders from your customers.
Don’t expect top-notch support from this website builder.
First of all, if you have purchased the cheapest plan, your only option to reach out will be via email. You’ll need to splurge on a more expensive subscription to have the option of talking over the phone or chatting with agents.
However, while submitting your query you can choose the urgency of the issue you’re reporting. We waited over 8 hours to get an answer to a low severity issue. Keep in mind that it may take even longer, as they work Monday to Friday from 12 AM to 6 PM PT.
Still, the response was very helpful – the agent was kind and knowledgeable. So, the wait was at least worth it!
If you don’t want to reach out to support, there’s a reasonably big knowledge base where you can find answers to most potential issues. In theory, you can also schedule a demo with an account executive to help you out. We say in theory, as the page where you’re supposed to create the appointment kept coming up with an error.
Surprisingly, very few people commented about their experience with Duda. There were only 3 reviews on Trustpilot – not enough to form an opinion.
However, the platform got 3.5 out of 5 stars – that’s 1 negative and 2 positive reviews.
The people who liked it were happy that the website builder was easy to use. The negative review came from a person who struggled to cancel his subscription, as he couldn’t contact support.
So even though the results were inconclusive, we can see where all of the reviewers are coming from!
Let’s take a look at the plans you can choose from and what they’ll get you. The lower price is based on a 1-year subscription and the higher one is if you decide to pay monthly.
Keep in mind that Duda doesn’t allow you to publish your website for free.
- Basic – You get to publish your website – $14 (or $19 month-to-month)
- Team – You can contact phone support and live chat. This also grants you access to management features and you can connect your domain – $22 (or $29 month-to-month)
- Agency – This plan allows you to use advanced tools, including website export – $74 (or $99 month-to-month)
How To Choose the Right Website Builder for You?
After going through the website builder reviews above, you’re probably already leaning towards one or two platforms. However, before you pick, you should go through the steps below.
1. Write It Down
Do you have a specific idea what your website will look like? Which features are absolutely necessary and which can you go without?
Write down everything you need in a website. Think about the design, the menu, if you’ll need a shop or not. To make things easier, here’s a list of questions you should answer:
- Are you certain you’ll figure things out or is fast support important to you?
- Are you good at design or do you prefer pre-designed templates?
- Will your website have an online store?
- Do you need a simple website or you’d prefer a builder with multiple integrations?
Don’t forget to keep your expectations realistic. It may not be impossible to create the website of your dreams, but you will need a professional for that – will the expenses be worth it?
So, write down the things you’re cool to compromise with.
2. Set a Budget
Determine what you can afford. Naturally, you’ll need to invest in a website to attract more clients. However, that investment is only worthwhile if you stay in business long enough to reap the rewards. That’s why you need a budget.
Keep in mind that website costs tend to pile up. Naturally, you can find a free website builder. However, that comes with significant limits to SEO and advertisement features.
So, here’s a breakdown of the expenses you’ll need to take into consideration:
- Website Builder Subscription Cost
The cool thing about website builders is that the plans usually include hosting. However, depending on your needs, your subscription can be between $4 and $50 per month.
- Domain Name
While you can find a web page builder that will also sell you a domain, you still have to consider its price. Domains can range anywhere between one dollar and several thousand – finding a good, yet relatively cheap option can be a challenge.
Does your website require any special features that aren’t built in the platform you chose? That could cost you. Make sure to check if a suitable app is available in the first place. Then see what it’s going to cost you per month.
Content is King! Do you have all the text you’ll need? What about the photos? When it comes to images, there’s a big database of royalty-free ones that could help you. However, if you need a specific photo or can’t write the copy yourself, you should add freelancers’ wages to the equation.
Whether you decide to advertise your business on Google, Facebook, Instagram or even the local paper, ads are expensive. However, it’s a smart investment that could greatly enlarge your client base.
3. Take a Look at the Website Builder Templates
Do you like what you see? Can you imagine your website built upon one of the templates?
Don’t forget to check if customizability is an option. Some platforms will have limits and that could make it hard to get the results you’re looking for.
Keep in mind that selecting a template is the first step of website creation. If the theme is similar to what you need, that means there will be less work for you!
4. Is the Platform User-friendly?
You’ll spend hours creating your web page. While it’s OK not to go for the easiest website builder, make sure to choose a platform you can work with.
Thankfully, you don’t need to be able to code to get great results. However, some builders are easier to figure out than others. You shouldn’t have to research how to do every single thing.
5. Are the SEO Features Good?
Even if you create the most awesome website, it wouldn’t matter if nobody can find it. We’ve all heard the internet saying – if it’s not on the first page of Google results, it doesn’t exist.
For your website to gain popularity, you’ll need to utilize the SEO tools you have available. Naturally, that’s not an easy task. However, some website builders can lead you through the basics, while others may leave you to figure things out for yourself.
6. Check the Available Integrations
There may be functions necessary for your website. So, before committing to a builder, it’s important to find out if it’ll work for you.
While you can find a website builder with useful free apps, they may not be the best for what you need. So knowing the limits of those integrations is important.
Once again, some integrations are paid. However, it’s worth investing in those and in a subscription if it helps bring your website to the top!
7. Most Importantly – Try It Out!
All of the website builders on this list have a free trial. If you’re not sure which platform to pick, give all of those you’re considering a go. There’s nothing to lose and a lot to gain!
You’ll inevitably find that one of the builders is more intuitive for you and better fits your needs!
Choosing the perfect website builder, especially for your business, is no small task.
However, a good website now is better than a perfect one in 2 months. Also, you can always edit your pages later on and make them even better.
So, go ahead, publish your website and open your business to the world!
Which is the easiest website builder?
The answer to this question heavily depends on your experience and personal preferences. However, in general, if you’re looking for easy – go for a drag and drop website builder.
If you’ve never created a web page before, you should choose a builder with good live chat. Short tutorials are also great to get you started.
So, to answer your question, we suggest giving Ucraft, Site123 or Wix (in that order) a go!
Which website builder is best for blogging?
Generally speaking, you can create a blog with every website builder.
However, there are platforms better suited for this type of website. Most notably, these include WordPress and Weebly.
Both of them have free plans so you can give them a go. Once you feel comfortable with the result, you can opt for a paid subscription to popularize your content.
Alternatively, you can try Blogger – a website builder, designed for this very purpose.
What is the easiest website builder for beginners?
If you’re looking for an easy and customizable website builder, we suggest going for Wix. The extremely intuitive interface, great support, and variety of integrations are definitive steps toward great results!
However, if you’re not sure about your design skills, then Squarespace will be a suitable fit for you. While you’ll lack some freedom, this would guarantee your web pages are stylish and beautiful.
Is Wix really free?
For the most part, yes! Without spending a dime, you can choose from a variety of templates and will get access to basic blocks and integrations.
However, your website will not be discoverable by Google. And that is a big issue if you’re trying to run a business.
Also, once you build your website on Wix, that’s where you’ll need to publish it. Exporting your work to another platform isn’t an option.
So, unless you’re building a website for your personal use, take a look at the plans Wix offers. If you’re not happy with them, we suggest also taking a look at Ucraft and Site123.
Is Wix better than WordPress?
Are cookies better than ice cream?
Truth is, both are great. Wix.com is the right website builder for beginners that want results fast. The great support, high customizability, and variety of integrations ensure you’ll find everything you need.
On the other hand, WordPress is a more professional website builder. The best thing about it is that you can easily export your website to WordPress.org – the platform that powers over a third of the internet. However, it’s not as straightforward as Wix.
What are the best free website builders?
If you skipped the whole article above, we’d be happy to summarize things for you!
Here’s a list of the best website builders and what makes them great:
- Wix – excellent interface, customizability and multiple integrations.
- Ucraft – great interface and support.
- WordPress.com – the most scalable builder.
- Site123 – helpful support and easy interface.
- Squarespace – beautiful designs and fast support.
- Weebly – beginner-friendly, vast knowledge base.
- Duda – beautiful designs and great interface.
