Getting pop-ups when browsing the web can be annoying, and modern Macs have an inbuilt blocker to prevent them altogether. However, there are times when pop-ups are useful. E.g., signing up for a newsletter, initiating a download, or even watching a video in a pop-up player.

In this article, we’ll explore how to allow pop-ups on Mac and iOS using the most common web browsers.

How To Allow Pop-Ups in Safari

Allowing pop-ups in Mac’s native browser is quite simple. All you need to do is follow these steps:

  • Open the Safari web browser.
  • Go to the Safari menu and click Preferences.
  • Click the Websites tab and the Pop-up Windows option from the left-hand menu.
  • At the bottom of the window is a dropdown menu for when visiting other websites. Set this to Allow.

  • You’ll see the current and other visited sites in a list. Click the dropdown menu next to the individual websites you want to permit pop-ups for and select Allow.

Unfortunately, unlike macOS computers, you cannot specify any exceptions. It’s all or nothing.

Are Pop-Ups Dangerous?

Pop-ups get a bad rap. They’re often associated with intrusive ads. They’re also annoying because they create a whole new browser window that must be closed. While they’re not inherently dangerous, pop-ups have been known for being a delivery mechanism for unauthorized cookies, viruses, and other threats.

Of course, there are also many legitimate reasons why a website might deliver a pop-up.

To play it safe, it’s wise to block pop-ups, or at least only allow them on sites you trust.

If you do unblock pop-ups on Safari or other browsers, make sure to have an antivirus running with real-time protection.

How To Block Pop-Ups on Mac

Now that you know how to allow pop-ups on Mac and mobile devices, let’s look at how to block them as well. By default, most browsers will already block pop-ups, but here’s how to make sure.

Safari

To get every pop-up window blocked, Safari users can follow these steps:

  • Open the Safari web browser.
  • Go to the Safari menu and click Preferences.
  • Click the Websites tab and the Pop-up Windows option from the left-hand menu.
  • At the bottom of the window is a dropdown menu for when visiting other websites. Set this to Block or Block and Notify. You can easily turn off the pop-up blocker in Safari using the same menu.

The latter option of Block and Notify will let you know when a pop-up has been blocked. You can then opt to open it manually.

If you want to allow pop-ups in Safari on a site-by-site basis, click the Websites tab and the Pop-up Windows option from the left-hand menu. You’ll see a list of visited sites. Click the dropdown menu next to a website to allow or block.
