As one of the best action RPG games in history, Elden Ring won a slew of awards, including Game of the Year for 2022. But what makes it so good?

Well, in addition to the excellent combat mechanics, intricate story, and exploration rewards, item crafting in Elden Ring is also top-notch!

How to craft items in Elden Ring, then, you may ask? Essentially, you need several things: a crafting kit, ingredients, containers, and cookbooks.

Keep on reading as we take you through the whole process!

How to Unlock Item Crafting in Elden Ring?

As a core Elden Ring mechanic, crafting is available soon after beginning your in-game adventure. And all you need to do is approach Merchant Kalé, who is found inside the ruined Church of Elleh in Limgrave—a location near the starting zone.

This general goods vendor sells the Crafting Kit, which enables item crafting from the main menu, the Cracked Pot, which is a container used in several crafting recipes, and several cookbooks, which will get you started with crafting common items.

Note that both the Crafting Kit and the Cracked Pot will cost you 300 Runes each. That said, some advanced recipes require Ritual Pots for 1,500 or 3,000 Runes each or a Perfume Bottle—sold by the Hermit Merchant for 2,000 Runes.

Also, the Crafting Kit comes with six starting recipes, even if you do not purchase the three cookbooks offered by Merchant Kalé. To make these basic items, you’ll need materials such as Thin Animal Bones, Rowa Fruit, Mushrooms, and Erdleaf Flowers.

Note: You can hold up to 20 Cracked Pots, 10 Ritual Pots, and 10 Perfume Bottle.

Where to Find Cookbooks in Elden Ring?

While Merchant Kalé sells the three starting cookbooks, the game includes 56 other recipe books full of consumables, ammunition, and other item types.

Some of the game’s cookbooks are sold by merchants, but others are looted from corpses, found lying in nooks and crannies, or locked inside chests.

Also, each new book will teach you between one and five new recipes, and if you collect all of them, you’ll be able to craft a total of 132 items (including the six starting ones).

How to Craft Items in Elden Ring?

Once you unlock crafting in Elden Ring, you can craft consumables wherever you are—as long as you are outside of combat—by following a few simple steps:

  1. Open the main menu and navigate to ‘Item Crafting’;
  2. Select the first ‘All Items’ tab or navigate to specific categories;
  3. Hover over and click on the item you want to craft;
  4. Check out the ‘Required Items’ section in the center of the screen;
  5. Click the button for ‘OK’ and choose the amount you want to craft;
  6. Tap ‘OK’ again to finalize the process.
  7. Crafted items will be deposited in your inventory!

If you run out of ingredients, you’ll get more by purchasing them from merchants, hunting beasts, killing enemies, and picking up herbs wherever you find them. The crafting menu will also tell you where a specific crafting material is looted from.

What Can You Craft in Elden Ring?

Using the in-game crafting menu is a convenient method of getting more ammunition, consumable, and throwable items to help you on your journey.

Best of all, you don’t even have to visit a merchant since you only need a few ingredients, which you will pick up as you wander The Lands Between.

After you unlock item crafting in Elden Ring, you can make any of the following items, that is, provided you have the corresponding recipes:

As you see, despite being able to craft so many different items, ranging from all kinds of ammunition and throwables to food granting resistance and damage negation, some key items, tools, and materials still cannot be crafted.

For instance, the various consumable flasks that restore your HP and FP are only replenished at Sites of Grace, where you also save your game. Most throwing stones and some throwing knives are also unavailable via crafting.

7 Useful Crafting Items to Have at all Times

So, are you wondering which recipes to get first since you’ll spend ages collecting all 132? In that case, here are seven items that prove useful at all times:

1. Immunizing Cured Meat

This handy consumable item adds a temporary buff of +100 Immunity that will last for a total of 60 seconds. While you can find it in several in-game locations, you can also craft it after acquiring the Armorer’s Cookbook 5 from Redmane Castle.

To make Immunizing Cured Meat, you need the following ingredients:

  • Rowa Fruit x5
  • Sliver of Meat x1
  • Great Dragonfly Head x1
  • Smoldering Butterfly x1

Immunizing Cured Meat is especially effective against the build-up of status effects such as poisons, blight, and rot.

2. Furlcalling Finger Remedy

This crucial in-game item lets you interact with other players by leaving messages for each other and engaging in cooperative and competitive PVP gameplay.

You don’t even need a recipe book to craft a Furlcalling Finger Remedy since it’s included with five other times in your starting Crafting Kit.

You only need two Erdleaf Flowers to make it, and you can hold up to 999 pieces.

3. Warming Stone

Found in various locations across The Lands Between and within the Nomadic Warrior’s Cookbook 19, the Warming Stone is an essential consumable item, especially for group gameplay, as it uses Focus Points to restore the HP of those nearby.

To make one, players will need the following items:

  • Erdleaf flower x1
  • Smoldering butterfly x1
  • Sanctuary stone x1

Note: Heals anyone (friends and foes) in a certain radius by 25 HP/s for 30 seconds, and its healing effect stacks with Frenzyflame Stones.

4. Soft Cotton

Any player who has ever died from fall damage has learned just how valuable Soft Cotton is. Once used, it temporarily reduces fall damage and the sound you make.

To craft it, you need the Nomadic Warrior's Cookbook 7 and two ingredients: Rowa Fruit x3 and Smoldering Butterfly x1.

Note that the effects of this item last 20 seconds, and you can hold up to 99 or store up to 600 Soft Cotton pieces. Also, the sale value of one is currently ten runes.

5. Uplifting Aromatic

Perfumes are a unique item group in Elden Ring, as they provide aura buffs to the entire group. This specific aromatic boosts your allies’ attack power by 10% and provides +90% damage negation until hit or until it runs out in 40 seconds.

Found within the Perfumer’s Cookbook 1, its crafting recipe includes four ingredients:

  • Altus Bloom x1
  • Budding Cave Moss x1
  • Silver Tear Husk x1
  • Arteria Leaf x1

 Note: You can hold and store up to 10 Uplifting Aromatic vials.

6. Frozen Raisin

After acquiring Torrent the Spirit Steed from Melina the Kindling Maiden, you might want to obtain Frozen Raisins—a consumable that restores your mount’s HP.

Frozen Raisins are a great alternative to Flasks of Crimson Tears, which you want to save for yourself. Remember, though, you can only use them while on horseback.

To make them, you need the Nomadic Warrior's Cookbook 23 and one Rimed Rowa (found in frigid highlands) for one batch of raisins.

7. Shield Grease

Greases are a group of consumables that are applied to your other items to strengthen their offensive or defensive abilities. In this case, the Shield Grease coats your left-hand weapon or shield to boost your guard by 13% and damage negation by 20%.

To craft this particular grease, you need the Glintstone Craftsman's Cookbook 4 and three different ingredients:

  • Root Resin x1
  • Silver Tear Husk x1
  • Crystal Bud x1

Note: While you can hold up to 10 Shield Grease rations, you can store 600!

Bottom Line

Now that you know how to craft items in Elden Ring, your journey will become much more fun since you can get your hands on all the essentials needed to beat the game’s difficult enemies, access high-level zones, and complete the main storyline.

Remember, you only need the crafting kit and a few cookbooks since you can loot all the ingredients you need as you continue surviving in the game.
