Is Discord on PS4 and PS5?

The short answer is not yet.

In 2021, Sony announced a partnership with Discord– a voice and chat app primarily used by gamers and streamers– saying they’re working hard to integrate the service into the PlayStation Network.

The next year, the video game company delivered on its promise– at least to a certain extent.

Here’s how the PSN integration works (for now) and how you can use Discord on your PS4 and PS5 without having to connect to your PC.

Is Discord On PS4?

Discord is the go-to chat and voice app for gamers that was specifically designed to serve the gaming community.

With more than 150 million monthly users, it is one of the largest gaming chat platforms in the world, and with a good reason; The app is lightweight, so it won’t bug down your processor, and it lets you communicate and strategize with friends mid-game, among other things.

Despite its popularity, Discord is still not available on the most popular console in the world as an app. PlayStation’s full Discord integration is expected to come with the 7.00 update.

For now, PS4 gamers can only connect their PSN accounts to Discord.

This lets them display their PlayStation game activity on their Discord profiles— something Xbox players have been able to do since 2018– and display their PSN ID to make it easy for other players to add them as a friend there.

To connect your Discord profile with your PSN account:

  1. Open the Discord app on your PC, mobile, or website.
  2. Go to Settings (the gear icon in the bottom-left corner of the screen).
  3. From the left sidebar, select Connection.
  4. Click on the PlayStation icon.
  5. Log into your PlayStation account.
  6. From the same page, toggle the switch to display your game activity on your Discord status and your PSN account on your profile.

How To Get Discord On PS4

Although there’s no Discord PS4 app, there are some ways you can get Discord on your PS4 console.

The easiest way to bring the voice and chat features from the app on your PlayStation is to purchase a MixAmp, a device that lets you split your audio between your console and PC.

To make it work, you’ll need the following equipment:

  • A PC or Mac.
  • An Astro MixAmp device.
  • Headphones with both 3.5 mm optical and USB jacks.
  • Male-to-male 3.5mm audio cable.
  • 3.5mm to 3.5mm Aux cord with volume control.
  • 3.5 mm aux splitters.

To set it up:

Step 1: Log into your Discount account on your PlayStation.

  • Open the browser on your PS4 and go to Discord’s website.
  • Log in to your Discord account.

Step 2: Connect your PlayStation to the MixAmp device.

  • Turn on your Astro MixAmp and set the device to Console Mode.
  • Connect your PS4 to the MixAmp with an optical cable.
  • Connect the optical cable on your headphones to the MixAmp input 3.5mm audio jack.
  • Connect an Aux cable to the MixAmp Aux port.
  • Connect your MixAmp and your PC using a USB cable.
  • Connect the PC speakers to the MixAmp with a male-to-male 3.5mm cable.

Step 3: Set up PS4 audio settings.

  • Go to Settings on your PlayStation.
  • Select Devices and open Audio Devices.
  • Change the Input Devices to USB headset.
  • Change the Output Device to TV or AV Amplifier.
  • Go back to the Settings menu and open Sound and Screen.
  • Select Audio Output Setting and change the Primary Output to Digital Out.

Step 4: Set up Discord audio on your PC.

  • Open your browser and go to Discord’s website.
  • Log into your account.
  • Under Settings, select Voice and Video.
  • Set the Input Device to MixAmp and the Output Device to PC speakers.

Once you’re done, your headset will have the audio output from the PS4 game and the PC voice stream, the levels of which you can adjust on the MixAmp.

Is Discord on PS5?

Despite having a couple of extra features and perks– including nearly 100% backward compatibility with PS4 – the PS5 does not feature a native Discord app on their consoles.

The PSN integration is available on PS5 and works in the same manner– you can link your PSN account to your Discord account and display your game activity and your PSN ID in the app.

To connect your Discord account with your PSN account:

  1. Open the Discord app on a mobile or PC.
  2. Go to Settings and select Connection from the sidebar
  3. Click on the PlayStation icon and log into your PSN account.
  4. Toggle the switch to display your PSN account and your game activity on your Discord status.

If you’re looking to get access to more of Discord’s features, you’ll have to resort to the same method as PS4 owners.

The MixAmp device works on PS5 consoles and you can follow the same step-by-step- guide to set up the connection, but it will cost you more. The PS5 does not have an optical port and the MixAmp device needs one to make the connection work. The only way to bypass this hurdle is to purchase an HDMI adapter.

Also, the PS5 has an Internet browser, but it’s not as obvious to access as the one available on PS4 consoles. To open Discord on PS5 from the browser:

  1. Launch the PlayStation Party.
  2. Open a chat window with a friend.
  3. Type “www.discord.com” and send the message.
  4. The message will turn into a hyperlink that you can click, which will open up the Discord website.
  5. Once you’re there, log into your Discord account.

How To Use Discord On PS4 Without a PC

PS4 users can use Discord without connecting it to a PC, but they won’t be able to message friends or join voice chats on the app.

To open Discord on a PS4:

  1. Launch the web browser on your PS4 and go to discord.com.
  2. Log into your Discord account.

From here, you can open chats and access channels, but in read-only mode.

How To Play On PlayStation and Use Discord At the Same Time

If the game you’re playing requires team coordination, you can always open the Discord app on your phone, but you won’t be able to hear much of everything that’s going on in the game.

Alternatively, you can use the PS Remote Play feature, which will allow you to transmit the audio output of your to your phone or PC, to play on PS4 with game sound, while using Discord.

To do that:

  1. Download and install the Remote Play app on your PC or Android.
  2. Log into the app with your PSN credentials.
  3. Choose the option to manually set up a connection to your PlayStation.
  4. On your PlayStation, go to Remote Play Connection Settings and select Add Device. This will generate a 6-digit code.
  5. Enter the code in the Remote Play app.
  6. Connect your controller to your PC with a USB cable.

You should now have game audio passing through your phone or PC. You can minimize the PS4 remote play app (if you are on pc) and play your PS4 on your TV whilst talking on discord.
