Elden Ring is a popular action RPG with 20 million global unit sales. It is a  challenging game that garners real-time reactions from players. Like the controller-wrecking Dark Souls series, it is impossible to close your eyes playing any of the FromSoftware games.

However, it is frustrating to experience stuttering and lagging issues while playing this game. Luckily, we’ve prepared 10 ways to fix them for you.

Continue reading to know how to fix Elden Ring performance issues.

Reasons for Lagging and Stuttering Issues in Elden Ring

There can be many reasons behind Elden Ring’s occasional lags or stutters. Below are the most common causes:

Reasons

Description

PC Hardware and Software Specifications

The lagging and stuttering issues can be due to your PC hardware or software being simply incompatible with Elden Ring.

Graphics Card

Issues might arise if your graphics card doesn’t meet the minimum requirement or you have an outdated graphics driver.

ISP (Internet Service Provider)

Internet speed still matters when playing in multiplayer or co-op mode. An internet speed below the minimum bandwidth can cause the game to lag.

Background Conflicting Apps

Apps running in the background that counter each other's functions reduce PC performance and may cause issues.

Display Settings

A system resolution higher than your GPU’s capacity can cause stuttering and lagging issues.

Overheating of PC

Elden Ring is a hardware-demanding game. Over-straining your PC may result in overheating and a significant FPS drop.

Missing Game Patches

Corrupted or missing game files can cause stuttering issues and even glitches.

How to Fx Elden Ring Stuttering and Lagging on PC?

Since the Elden Ring game was launched in 2022, many players have reported micro stuttering and lagging issues. This was addressed by Bandai Namco Entertainment, the game’s publisher.

Multiple game patches have been released by then, but the issues persist. However, if you have downloaded the latest patch but still encounter problems, try the steps we’ve listed below:

  • Restart Your Computer

This may sound simple, but it works a lot of times. Before you begin thinking of complicated causes, try restarting your PC.

You may have started playing after numerous activities that remained in the computer’s memory. Returning your PC to its “pristine” state by restarting can get you back on track.

  • Get Minimum PC Requirements

New AAA games are especially demanding. Your computer must meet the minimum or recommended requirements for a good gaming experience.

Here are the PC requirements for Elden Ring:

Minimum

Recommended

OS: Windows 10

CPU: INTEL CORE i5-8400 or AMD RYZEN 3 3300X

RAM: 12GB

Graphics Card: NVIDIA GEFORCE GTX 1060 3GB or AMD Radeon RX 580 4GB

Storage: 60GB available space

OS: Windows 10/11

CPU: INTEL CORE i7-8700K or AMD RYZEN 5 3600X

RAM: 16GB

Graphics Card: NVIDIA GEFORCE GTX 1070 8GB or AMD Radeon RX VEGA 56 8GB

Storage: 60GB available space

However, remember that the minimum system requirement simply refers to the minimum hardware or software required to play the game. It does not guarantee optimal performance.

You can still run into issues even with the minimum required hardware/software. It would be better to gear up with the recommended system requirements.

  • Use a VPN To Avoid ISP Throttling

Your ISP can throttle your bandwidth during peak hours. Sometimes, they do it if you’re caught torrenting or visiting sites that illegally distribute copyrighted material.

Whatever the reason, this can be a problem if you’re playing co-op or multiplayer. Try using a virtual private network (VPN) to work around ISP throttling.

We recommend using trusted brands like NordVPN or ExpressVPN for a fast and secure connection.

  • Update Graphics Driver

A graphics driver is a software that manages your computer’s graphic components. Even if you use a top-notch graphics card, you can still experience performance issues if your drivers are outdated.

Update Graphics Driver

Here’s how to manually update graphics drivers:

  1. Press the Windows key on your keyboard.
  2. On the search bar, type in Device Manager, then select it.
  3. Click the dropdown for Display adapters.
  4. Right-click on your active GPU (in this case, the AMD Radeon), then click Update driver.
  5. To check for updates, click on Search automatically for drivers.
  • Apply Best Settings for Elden on PC

If your PC specs are lower than the recommended system requirements, we suggest lowering your in-game graphics settings.

Here are some ways you can do it:

  • Adjusting In-Game Graphics Settings

In the in-game title menu screen, go to System and select Graphics.

Note that the Resolution is the most important graphics setting in Elden Ring for performance gains and visuals. Try adjusting it to each option and see the results.

You can also head to the Advanced Settings. Setting everything to Low or Medium should improve performance. Try tweaking each item for the best results.

Adjusting In-Game Graphics Settings

  • Calibrate Graphics Card Software Settings

You can also make adjustments through your graphics processing unit (GPU) software. Use either the NVIDIA control panel or the AMD Radeon app.

With NVIDIA control panel settings, here’s how to adjust your graphics settings:

  1. Press the Windows key
  2. On the search bar, type in “NVIDIA control panel” and select it.
  3. Within the app, click on Manage 3D Settings > Program Settings.
  4. Click on the dropdown and select Elden Ring. You can add it manually if it’s not yet included.
  5. Apply all of these in the game settings:

Image Scaling: Off

Ambient Occlusion: Off

Anisotropic filtering: Application controlled

Antialiasing – FXAA: Off

Antialiasing – Gamma Correction: On

Antialiasing – Mode: Application controlled

Antialiasing – Setting: Application controlled

Antialiasing – Transparency: Off

Background Application Max Frame Rate: Off

CUDA – GPUs: All

DSR – Factors: 4.00x

DSR – Smoothness: 33%

C. Verify Integrity of Game Files

All the settings given above will be useless if there are corrupted and missing game files in your Elden Ring.

Follow these simple steps to replace corrupted files:

  1. Launch your Steam client.
  2. Go to Game Library.
  3. Right-click on the Elden Ring.
  4. Click on Properties > Local Files tab.
  5. Choose Verify integrity of game files. Click on Verify.
  • Refresh VSync

VSync is a useful feature that adapts the GPU’s frame rate capacity to the capabilities of the screen monitor. This prevents “screen tearing” when the GPU’s frame rate is more than the monitor’s limit.

Refreshing VSync by turning it off/on may resolve performance issues resulting in Elden Ring FPS drops. Below are steps on how to do it with NVIDIA and AMD Radeon control panels.

Toggling Vsync on NVIDIA:

  1. Go to the NVIDIA control panel.
  2. Click on Manage 3D Settings.
  3. Click on Global Settings.
  4. Look for Vertical Sync and turn it off/on.

Toggling VSync on AMD Radeon:

  1. Open the AMD Radeon app.
  2. Go to Settings and click Graphics.
  3. Look for Wait for Vertical Refresh.
  4. On the dropdown, Always On or Always Off should turn it on or off.
  5. Restart your PC to apply changes.
  • Update Your PC’s Operating System

Windows 11 is the recommended operating system for Elden Ring. Although it can work with Windows 10, it is not the optimized OS for this game and may still need fixing.

Here’s how to update your Windows OS and other related applications:

  1. Click on the Start button, then click on Settings.
  2. Select Update & Security.
  3. Click on Check for Updates. If your PC can run Windows 11, it should allow you to update.

8. Use Game Booster Applications

Your GPU software can already perform some game-boosting functions, but it is not as effective as game-boosting applications. Defrags, elimination of background processes, FPS boosts, and automatic driver updater are useful functions of a game booster.

You can try popular game-boosting apps like Advanced System Optimizer or GameBoost to improve PC performance while playing Elden Ring.

9. Make Sure You are Malware Free

Malware can slow your PC down by occupying substantial memory, corrupting data, creating app conflicts, and attempting to take over your device.

Make sure you are malware by using a trusted anti-virus or by protecting yourself with a VPN with an anti-malware function, like NordVPN.

10. Fix Micro Stuttering in Elden Ring

Some players reported that disabling Microsoft Device Association Root Enumerator reduces micro-stuttering significantly. You can try it as a troubleshooting test and enable it back if you see no improvement. Your PC will work for the most part without it.

Here’s how to disable Microsoft Device Association Root Enumerator:

  1. Go to the Device Manager.
  2. Look for Software devices.
  3. Click on the dropdown.
  4. Right-click on Microsoft Device Association Root Enumerator
  5. Click on Disable device.

Disable device

Bottom Line

If you have done all of the fixes mentioned above but still experiencing the same issues, you can try contacting game support or wait for a new patch to be released. The tips here should address problems unrelated to in-game bugs or version issues.
