Feel like giving Adventure mode a go?

This guide covers all you need to know before you embark on an adventure of a lifetime! Read on, and you’ll find out:

  • What is Adventure mode in Minecraft
  • How to enable it
  • What are the best player-made maps
  • What are the other game modes

So, let’s dig in!

What Is Adventure Mode in Minecraft?

Adventure mode is a game mode where you can experience player-created maps. The name says it all — you can immerse yourself in custom adventures that often feature quests, exploration, and fighting.

It’s also a brilliant opportunity to reinvent the game and stretch your creative muscles. You’d be surprised at the stuff people come up with!

For example, one of the most popular maps is an epic blocky rendition of Legend of Zelda.

So, what exactly makes Adventure stand out from other Minecraft modes?

In a nutshell, it has its set of rules and restrictions meant to keep the world as it is. That means you can’t freely mine and place blocks because that would change the game world.

Let’s think about this for a second!

Your gameplay will change dramatically. You can’t place a bed and sleep, for starters. You’ll have to rely on beds that are already provided. Similarly, you’ll have to use the in-universe crafting tables, furnaces, anvils, etc.

However, you’ll still be able to take damage and die in this Minecraft adventure. You’ll also have to manage your hunger meter and energy.

All in all, these restrictions are meant to challenge your creativity and survival skills and keep the map unaltered.

How to Activate It

To turn Adventure mode on in Minecraft, you’ll need to enable cheats first. Otherwise, you won’t be able to type in any game commands.

Luckily, it only takes a minute to do so!

The easiest way to allow cheats is via the creation menu as you're starting a new world.

There’s also a workaround for the worlds you’ve already created without enabling them beforehand.

Here’s how:

Once you’re in-game, open up your Game Menu and go to Open to LAN

Then click on Allow Cheats: ON. Finally, pick Start LAN World, and you’ll go back to your game.

Now you’re free to bend the rules with the cheats console. And that means it’s time to switch game modes in Minecraft!

Press T to bring up your trusty console and type in: /gamemode adventure

This command works for all versions of Minecraft Java Edition. Press Enter, and you’re officially in!

Minecraft Adventure Mode Maps

The Minecraft community is positively brimming with ingenious custom maps. But, to play any of them, you’ll need to do some prep work first.

Let me show you how in four simple steps:

  1. Download the map you want.
  2. Unzip the folder in your Minecraft Saves folder.
  3. Launch the game and look for the custom world in your single-player world options.
  4. Load it as you would any other save file — and that’s it!

With that out of the way, let’s see which Minecraft adventure maps really stand out.

Here’s my pick for a guaranteed fun time.

Project Zelda

What do you get when you combine Minecraft and the Legend of Zelda series? A darn good game, apparently!

Project Zelda is a completely original map with a unique overworld, story, and dungeons. It shows impressive dedication to detail.

You can collect rupees, heal via fairies, and make your sword spin. You can even use a boomerang and bombs!

Metroid Bounty Hunter

The legendary Samus Aran returns in this Minecraft adventure game. In typical Metroid fashion, you’ll have to progress through seven alien-infested zones, collecting and upgrading your gear along the way.

Above all, the gameplay is a blast — pun intended!

Your arm cannon can shoot four different types of beams. You can also charge your attacks for a one-hit kill.

Asleep

The premise for this Adventure mode map is simple but effective. Every time you go to bed, you’re teleported to another fantastic dream (or nightmare) scenario.

And Asleep is not afraid of taking you to weird places!

Catapulting cows from a castle and becoming Pac-Man is just the tip of the iceberg here.

Terra Restore 2

Terra Restore 2 is a classic in the custom map community, and well deservedly so.

You and your Enderman companion travel the desolate lands of Nira and try to restore them to their former glory. Every time you clear a dungeon, the area surrounding it springs back to life.

This Minecraft Adventure world also features Survival mode sections as a welcome change of pace.

The Tourist

If you’re in the mood for something slow and atmospheric, this is the map for you.

The Tourist takes you on a sightseeing trip to Paris. The breathtaking monuments and beautiful soundtrack really make it an otherworldly experience.

And beneath its pretty exterior, there are secrets just waiting to be uncovered.

Other Minecraft Game Modes

Now that you’re familiar with Adventure mode let’s take a look at the other playable options.

Survival

Survival mode gives you the classic experience of gathering materials and crafting while watching out for danger. You have to keep an eye on your hunger meter as well.

If you die, you’ll lose your items and experience points and then respawn again. Such is the circle of life in Minecraft.

Creative

Creative mode lets you kick back and relax. You are invulnerable, and you have infinite supplies of blocks and items. You can even fly!

It’s perfect when you just feel like making something grand without having to worry about resources and sneaky creepers.

Spectator

Just like in Adventure mode in Minecraft, you can’t interact with blocks as a spectator. In fact, you can’t even interact with other entities or their inventories.

However, you’re free to roam the skies and clip through blocks.

Hardcore

Hardcore mode is basically the same as survival, except more extreme. The difficulty level is locked on Hard.

Most importantly, when your HP drops to zero, it’s permadeath. You can’t return to the same game world you’ve died in.

Wrap Up

Adventure mode proves that Minecraft is all about flexibility. I mean, it allows you to create a game within a game, and you’re only limited by your imagination. It might sound like a cliche, but it’s true.

As a player, you’re also encouraged to work your way around this mode’s restrictions. It’s an entirely different experience from your standard Survival game.

Best of all, there are thousands of free Minecraft Adventure maps to explore.
