Apple's upcoming mixed reality headset will not harness the Metaverse, as reported by an industry observer.

Metaverse is Off-Limits

Apple may drop a new mixed reality headset later this year, but it will not be a foray into the Metaverse.

Mark Gurman, known for unveiling accurate insights into Apple’s plans, reported:

“Here’s one word I’d be shocked to hear on stage when Apple announces its headset: metaverse,” Gurman wrote. "I've been told pretty directly that the idea of a completely virtual world where users can escape to — like they can in Meta Platforms/Facebook's vision of the future — is off-limits from Apple"

According to Gurman, Meta’s immersive idea of the metaverse does not correspond with Apple’s direction for its VR product. Instead, he believes that the tech company will explore gaming, communication, and content consumption in “bursts”.

“Gaming should be a strong focus of the machine, especially given that it will have multiple processors, a fan, extremely high-resolution displays, and its own App Store,” he wrote. “Next, media consumption. Third, communications.”

The market for AR/VR products is rising steadily, according to statistics. Several companies currently compete with each other to cement a place as industry leaders

Based on patent filings, Apple is no newcomer to the virtual space. The has been exploring AR and VR technologies for over a decade.
