The new metaverse executive previously held the role of senior vice president of consumer experiences and platforms.
Metaverse Strategy Unit
Disney has named a new executive to lead its strategy for the metaverse. Mike White, formerly in charge of Consumer Experiences and Platforms, will supervise a new unit that includes senior staff.
White has been with Disney for over 10 years. Before joining Disney, he worked in several tech roles, including senior roles at Apollo Group and Yahoo. His new role is senior vice president of Next Generation Storytelling and Consumer Experiences. Here, the company hopes that he will help oversee consumers’ experiences with Disney’s metaverse.
In a memo sent to staff, Disney CEO Bob Chapek explained that White will head the company’s plans to play a starring role in the metaverse.
"For nearly 100 years, our company has defined and re-defined entertainment by leveraging technology to bring stories to life in deeper, more impactful ways," Chapek wrote in the email memo.
"Today, we have an opportunity to connect those universes and create an entirely new paradigm for how audiences experience and engage with our stories."
The memo added that Disney+, its streaming service, added 11.8 million new subscribers in the last quarter of 2021.
Storytelling in the Metaverse
The metaverse is an online network of digital environments where users will work, play, and interact with each other. It will combine aspects of virtual reality, augmented reality, and blockchain technology.
Meta’s rebrand from Facebook last year has served as a catalyst for many companies and investors. Mainstay companies and startups are now scrambling to stake their positions as leaders in the upcoming virtual world.
Disney announced its intention to take a leap into the metaverse in November last year which it considers a new “storytelling frontier”.
