Bob Chapek outlined the company’s direction in a backstage chat at its biennial fan convention.

“Serving Unique Experiences”

Disney has a vision of harnessing technology even more than it currently does to enhance storytelling in the future, says CEO Bob Chapek. The chief executive spoke to news publication Reuters at the biennial D23 Expo fan convention in California on Sunday.

According to Chapek, Disney’s plans for the metaverse will involve “next-generation storytelling”. The company will use data gathered from theme park visits and Disney+ streaming habits to curate personalized experiences for its users.

“Disney is absolutely a lifestyle,” Chapek told Reuters. “The question is, how is our next-gen storytelling leveraging what we know about a guest uniquely in this Disney lifestyle, then serving up unique experiences.”

Chapek did not mention the metaverse specifically. However, since Facebook rebranded to Meta, several companies, including Disney, have rushed to stake in what many believe to be an upcoming iteration of the internet.

Disney was interested in the idea even before that, with plans to extend its theme park experiences to people all over the world who cannot visit in person.

Last year, it appointed seasoned executive Mike White as VP of Next Generation Storytelling and Consumer Experiences. White will harness emerging technology like augmented reality to show a new side to storytelling.
