Oiltanking GmbH and Mabanaft GmbH & Co KG Group came under attack from cybercriminals on Sunday.

Scope of Attack Undisclosed

Two major German oil storage and supply companies fell victim to a cyberattack that severely affected their operations. Both subsidiaries of Marquard & Bahls AG, the companies were forced to temporarily operate at a “limited capacity” after being hit by hackers.

Concerns of fuel shortage immediately hit the German media, as Oiltanking GmbH alone supplies fuel to 26 German companies. Those include 1,955 gas stations owned by Shell.

Following the attack, both companies gave assurances that they were on top of the matter.

“Upon learning of the incident, we immediately took steps to enhance the security of our systems and processes, and launched an investigation into the matter,” they said in a joint press statement. “We are working to solve this issue according to our contingency plans.”

“We are undertaking a thorough investigation, together with external specialists, and are collaborating closely with the relevant authorities,”

So far, they haven’t fully disclosed the extent of the attack. A report from German news website Handelsblatt indicated that it had severely impacted Oiltanking’s operations. However, the companies have only addressed it as a “cyber incident affecting our IT systems.”

Up until now, no hacking group has come forward to claim the attacks.

A spokesperson for the independent tank storage association remained confident that other fuel suppliers will step up to fill the gap.

At least 64% of companies globally experience some form of cyberattack.
