Google Shows Off New Gen AR Glasses at I/O
Updated · May 12, 2022
Chief executive Sundar Pichai teased the smart glasses on Wednesday at Google’s I/O developer summit.
A Sneak Peek
Google’s I/O summit saw the company unveil a slew of new devices, including the Pixel 6a, a Tensor-powered tablet, and the Pixel Watch. In addition, CEO Sundar Pichai showed off its futuristic augmented reality smart glasses.
In a video, Pichai demonstrated what the glasses, still only a prototype, will be capable of. The demo suggested that it will show live language translations to the wearer. This means that someone wearing the AR glasses may understand what another person speaking a different language is saying by reading captions through the lenses.
“Language is so fundamental to connecting with one another,” said Pichai to the audience. “Yet, understanding someone who speaks a different language or trying to follow a conversation if you are deaf or hard of hearing can be a real challenge.”
The black and thick-rimmed glasses will take advantage of the tech giant’s advances in translation and transcription. It will display translated text in real-time.
However, it is still early in development. Pichai did not give any details on a due date or its technical specifications.
This will be Google’s second attempt at smart glasses. Google Glass, its ill-fated smartglasses also debuted at the annual developer conference a decade ago.
With AR technology on the rise, more companies are throwing their hats into the ring. In March, e-commerce firm Alibaba invested $60 million in AR glasses maker Nreal as it looks to make a metaverse move. Facebook parent company Meta plans to release its first true AR glasses in 2024.
