The new photo-centric feature will be called Candid Challenges.

A BeReal Clone

App researcher Alessandro Paluzzi spotted and revealed Candid Challenges, which appears to be Instagram’s response to the increasingly popular BeReal app.

The new feature will encourage users to share a selfie with their followers every day at a random time. It will send them a notification prompting them to take a photo with both their front and rear cameras. They can share the resulting image on their Stories. Users will have two minutes to post the picture to complete the challenge.

An Instagram spokesperson confirmed that the app is testing the new feature internally but did not make any further comments.

There is no indication of when Candid Challenges may become available or whether it will even reach that stage at all. Instagram can choose to keep the feature an internal test.

However, the popular social media platform has made it a habit to try features resembling other apps. Most recently, it unveiled changes similar to TikTok's with more video content and an increase in the percentage of recommended posts users get.

The platform’s shift to video did not get a warm reception from users. Many Instagram influencers insisted that the app go back to its roots. Even Instagram head Adam Mosseri said the new design is “not yet good.”

Yet, the app remains one of the top social media platforms, with 95 million photos and videos shared every day in 2022.
