Major Ukrainian Telecoms Operator Hit By Cyberattack
Updated · Mar 29, 2022
Ukrtelecom suffered its “most severe” cyberattack since Russia launched its offensive on Ukraine last month.
National ISP Hit
Ukraine’s national telecoms company Ukrtelecom got hit by a powerful cyberattack. It knocked its services almost completely offline. This is the latest in a series of hacks that have hit the country’s infrastructure and institutions since the invasion by Russia in February.
Yurii Shchyhol, the head of Ukraine’s technical security and intelligence service confirmed the incident.
"Today, the enemy launched a powerful cyberattack against Ukrtelecom’s IT-infrastructure," he said. “The attack was repelled. And now Ukrtelecom has an ability to begin restoring its services to the clients.”
Ukrtelecom’s spokesperson Mikhail Shuranov also confirmed that “the provision of services is gradually resumed”.
Network tracker Netblocks described the attack as “the most severe” since the war began. It reduced connectivity to about “13% of pre-war levels”, according to the internet monitor.

“The new attack has cut deep into Ukraine’s connectivity at national scale and with extended duration and impact,’ Netblocks director Alp Toker told Forbes. “Unlike the spate of cuts and outages in the most heated conflict zones, this one has struck the country’s national operator at its core, and they appear to be struggling to mitigate the incident.”
