One of the Biggest Crypto Hacks Ever Targeted Gamers
Updated · Apr 18, 2022
Lazarus is the hacking group behind the huge cryptocurrency heist, worth $620 million in Ethereum.
Who Are Lazarus
The group, supposedly backed by North Korea's primary intelligence bureau, is not new on the hacking scene. It first came on the global radar in 2014, when its members hacked into Sony Pictures and leaked confidential data. Back then, the group demanded that the studio cancel the theatrical release of the movie The Interview, starring James Franco and Seth Rogen. The movie featured a plot to assassinate the North-Korean leader Kim Jong-un.
The hackers even posed as health officials during the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic and spread malicious links. Anglo-Swedish-owned AstraZeneca was among the targets back then.

Now, the hackers’ actions have cost the players of the online game Axie Infinity around $620 million in Ethereum.
Said players can earn crypto while they play or when they trade their avatars.
Last Thursday, the FBI published a statement, claiming they “were able to confirm Lazarus Group and APT38, cyber actors associated with the DPRK, are responsible for the theft of $620 million in Ethereum reported on March 29.”
“The FBI, in coordination with Treasury and other U.S. government partners, will continue to expose and combat the DPRK’s use of illicit activities – including cybercrime and cryptocurrency theft – to generate revenue for the regime,” the statement promises.

(We all disagree – she influences the team pretty well.) She finished a master’s degree focused in Literature, Publishing, Mass Media. Her hobbies include traveling, and reading. Teddy hopes that yoga will be the thing to finally teach her some patience and show her the path toward world domination. Maybe modern tech can also help her with that.
