REvil Forced Offline

Last Thursday, Reuters reported that the hackers’ site “Happy Blog” is no longer available.

Cybersecurity Experts Hack the Hackers

In a surprising turn of events, cybersecurity experts managed to hack notorious ransomware gang REvil.

“Happy Blog” – the dark web blog, which the hackers used to leak victim data – is no longer online.

Tom Kellermann, an adviser to the Secret Service on cybercrime investigations, explained that federal agencies and “like-minded countries” have stopped the ransomware gang from hitting more companies.

In addition, a White House National Security Council spokesperson told Reuters: “Broadly speaking, we are undertaking a whole of government ransomware effort, including disruption of ransomware infrastructure and actors, working with the private sector to modernize our defenses, and building an international coalition to hold countries who harbor ransom actors accountable.”

Back in July, REvil took another hit on its websites. It is still unclear, however, what other measures the officials have taken against the gang.

Who Are REvil?

REvil is a Russian cybercriminal group, that has been wreaking havoc in the past several months.

For example, in July, it demanded a $70 Million ransom in Bitcoin to decrypt Kaseya’s data after a cyber attack. The gang is also part of the reason why Russia wasn’t invited to a cybercrime summit earlier this month.
