The Duffer Brothers’ hit series has just achieved a new milestone, Netflix announced on Tuesday.
Stranger Things season 4 moved beyond one billion hours watched. This solidified its status as the second most popular title on the famous streaming service, right after Squid Game.
The newest season of the supernatural series had a cumulative 1.15 billion hours. By comparison, Squid Game had 1.65 billion hours in the same time span.
Stranger Things will continue to amass viewing hours, and it may even surpass the Korean-language sensation. According to some reports, Volume 2 attracted so many viewers that it caused Netflix’s servers to crash on July 1.
Watch-time popularity does, however, favor shows with unusually long runtimes. Stranger Things 4’s runtime stands at 778 minutes, making it 60% longer than that of Squid Game.
Breaking records is nothing new for Stranger Things. In September 2021, Netflix reported that the series had surpassed one billion viewing hours across all three seasons. More recently, it earned the title of a series with the most viewing minutes in a week with an impressive 7.2 billion.
It’s rare for TV series to have their best season after the show has entered the latter half of its life. However, the Duffer Brothers’ hit has done the impossible, and it looks like the world will have the Stranger Things fever for the foreseeable future.
Despite Stranger Things’ success, Netflix is experiencing a down year, having lost subscribers for the first time in a decade back in April.
