TikTok Fully Releases Effect House, AR Development Tool
Updated · Apr 13, 2022
The social media platform released a beta version to developers last August.
“Making it Fun to Create”
TikTok has announced the rollout of its augmented reality tool Effect House to creators and developers on the platform.
It presents a platform for users with the relevant skills to create AR effects that others can adopt.
“Creative effects are part of what makes it so fun to create on TikTok,” the company said in a blog post. “Whether you’re teleporting into new worlds with Green Screen or freeze-framing with Time Warp Scan, creative effects empower creators to express themselves, entertain, and share stories through a wide array of engaging and immersive formats.”
The platform had been operating in closed beta since last fall. More than 450 creators were testing it. The results have been significant — Effect House has inspired more than 1.5 billion videos that have gone on to gather 600 billion+ views. Now the company says all creators, designers, and developers can “imagine new frontiers for TikTok's effects universe”.
The tool will come with tools and learning resources to help users build “immersive and dynamic effects” for other users.
The market for AR and VR is expected to exceed $200 billion this year. TikTok is in competition with other social network sites to stake a claim in the technology. Snapchat and Instagram have a headstart, with each offering a range of AR tools on its platform.
