The social network company introduced the function on Tuesday.

TikTok Avatars

TikTok will let users transform their images into custom characters that can mimic their expressions. It borrows heavily from the style of Snapchat’s Bitmoji and Apple’s Memoji.

The feature will detect a user’s face with the phone’s camera and then overlay that with an animated avatar. It will grant a measure of anonymity to users who would rather not use their real images.

The social network announced the arrival of TikTok Avatars on Tuesday. It rolled out globally to the platform’s increasingly large user base

“We are excited to launch the first version of TikTok avatars worldwide and will continue to improve this feature to ensure the experience is truly representative of everyone at TikTok,” the company said in a statement.

There are about two dozen preset Avatars to choose from. Alternatively, users can decide to employ several customizable options available. They can tweak the shape of the avatar’s face, facial features, skin tones, hairstyles, etc

TikTok says it expects feedback from users and will listen to that to improve on the feature.
