What Is ConvertKit?

ConvertKit is an email marketing tool that is relatively new to the market. It was created by Nathan Barry in 2013.

This software was originally targeted at professional bloggers. It has since included other professional content creators such as podcasters, course creators, and YouTubers in its target audience.

How can it help?

ConvertKit Features

This tool sure has a lot to offer to modern-day creators. Some of the main ConvertKit features include:

Email Marketing

ConvertKit is primarily an email marketing tool. This program is very effective in helping you connect with your audience and grow your business.

With the ConvertKit email templates, you’ll surely capture the attention of your audience. The templates can be customized, and the software allows you to create as many branded ones as you like.

ConvertKit also delivers a clutter-free writing experience. It has a simplified interface with inline styling options for you to add buttons, images, or videos.

More than that, ConvertKit enables you to organize your subscribers so that you can better cater to them. You can automatically add tags to your readers based on the links they click in your emails. You can use the filtering system to create an unlimited number of groups and segments based on:

  • custom form fields
  • location
  • tags

But that’s hardly all!

ConvertKit has rich email marketing capabilities. You can:

  • A/B test two different lines.
  • get performance stats, including open and click rates, new subscribers, purchases, and engagement.
  • high delivery rate - 98%, ensuring that emails end up in subscribers’ inboxes and not spam folders.

Email Designer

For many creators, the writing and editing side of things is not pleasant fun. Thankfully, the ConvertKit email design simplifies the process.

Simple doesn't mean boring in this context, so don’t be mistaken. You can still add form and function to your emails by incorporating:

  • lists
  • personalization headers
  • buttons
  • dividers
  • clickable CTAs

And more! Just use the provided content menu. You can even add your logos and images, or access thousands of free, unique images thanks to the Unsplash integration.

In addition, this tool allows you to create more unique, brand specific and device responsive templates without using any code. You can change anything from the spacing, fonts, colors, to button styles, etc. If you do want to get your hands dirty with code though, you can add an HTML box.

One thing worth mentioning in this ConvertKit review is that the interface of the email designer is very clean and user friendly. You no longer have to interact with a cluttered menu bar. You can easily change the font, color, alignment, or even add a link to your content from a simple block formatting bar that disappears when you don’t need it anymore.

ConvertKit’s automation tool allows you to create a seamless path for your email subscribers to go through. It ensures that you send well-timed and targeted content to your audience.

Creating a funnel is as easy as clicking the plus button on the interface and selecting an event, action, or condition that triggers the next step to your desired outcome. Building ConvertKit sequences is a very intuitive process, and you even get to experience your sequences the same way your subscribers will.

This visual automation also shows you a quick view of exactly what’s happening in your funnels via cards. Each card shows you how many of your subscribers have completed each step of your funnels. So, you can see how well your content is performing and how your subscribers are interacting with it.

Alternatively, if you do not want to create an entire funnel, you can make individual automation rules with a simple “if this”, i.e., trigger, “then that”, i.e., action functionality. You can also send out scheduled ConvertKit broadcast emails to all your subscribers or to those under specific segments, groups, or tags.

Other automation capabilities include:

  • segmenting your audience based on their customer journey
  • customizing a subscriber’s path based on their actions
  • creating broadcasts to deliver blog posts to your audience every time a new post is published
  • choosing what days and times to schedule a digest so your emails reach your audience right when they expect them

ConvertKit user reviews show that the eCommerce feature is quite popular.

The process of setting up your site is pretty straightforward. Add your product details and set the prices. You can sell e-books, paid newsletters, music, presets, courses, etc. There is no limit to the number of products you can sell.

ConvertKit commerce also allows you to set up one-time purchases or recurring subscriptions for your products or services.

The next step involves you creating a product page. It is completely customizable, from your product pitch to your checkout page, and your confirmation message or receipt. You can change colors and fonts, and add images from Unsplash or your Instagram feed.

You can even create a unique URL for your page, or connect your own custom domain to share your branded link anywhere.

Finally, you can start promoting your product and reeling in the sales. The software incorporates a simple and secure integrated payment processing with low transaction fees.

During the whole testing process for this ConvertKit review, I was pleasantly surprised at how easy to do everything was.

In adding to the aforementioned, ConvertKit commerce also allows you to:

  • organize your audience using tags and segments, and promote your product to those you know would be interested
  • add filters to your emails to make sure you don’t pitch to a client who’s already purchased your products.
  • connect your ConvertKit account to other platforms where you sell your products, allowing you to view the data from all your sales across in one place
  • promote like a pro with simple sales funnels
  • easily set up an automated sales and follow-up funnel to pitch your product to the right people with our world-class audience growth and email tools
  • issue refunds at the click of a button

Landing Pages

With ConvertKit you can have great landing pages to communicate your ideas to your audience in a creative way.

This program offers free templates, designed by professionals. They are fully responsive, so you’ll always have a perfectly formatted landing page that can easily be viewed on any device. They are also customizable - you don’t need coding experience. That said, ConvertKit has still made custom CSS an option.

You also get quick metric updates for conversion rates and subscriber counts. It also lets you set up your favorite tracking methods, including Google Analytics and Facebook business. You’ll be able to see how your audience is interacting with your landing page, which can help you improve conversions.

You can also create opt-in forms that allow customers to grant you permission to enter their inboxes. The landing page opt-in forms create a seamless path for you to turn your readers into subscribers. They also help you gather the info you need to connect with your audience and increase your sales.

Signup Forms

The ConvertKit app also features free sign-up forms. It offers customizable templates in different designs, including newsletters, freebies, and blog subscriptions.

The form templates are also responsive, so regardless of whether you use a sidebar, inline, pop-up, or slide-in, it’ll look good on all devices

ConvertKit also offers multiple ways for you to embed your forms on your website, depending on your level of experience. You can even tailor their placement and appearance on your site to meet the needs of your page.

Additionally, you can create custom fields in your forms to collect very specific data - name, location and even industries. This information can help you segment your audience and send them targeted content.

Creator Pro Features

ConvertKit recently added a new subscription plan called the Creator Pro plan. This plan comes with some additional features:

  • Subscriber scoring: You can track your top subscribers and give them the attention they need,  as well as re-engage those that might be slipping away.
  • Deliverability reporting: Shows you exactly how your opens and clicks trend over time.
  • Newsletter referral program: Includes a free Sparkloop account that allows you to reward your subscribers for referring their friends to your email list.
  • Facebook Custom Audiences: Direct integration with Facebook Custom Audiences that lets you sync your ConvertKit segments directly to Facebook.
  • Change a URL after an email is sent: Pretty useful feature if you need to make changes.
  • Invite your team: You can invite as many members as you like and easily switch accounts through a drop-down menu in your settings.

ConvertKit Integrations

ConvertKit has 107 integrations available at the time of writing. One of the most popular integrations is the ConvertKit WordPress plugin. It allows you to add forms to the bottom of any page or post on your blog, without writing any code.

Crowdcast is also another popular option. It is a live video platform that allows creators to host live streams, webinars, and summits. With direct integration with ConvertKit, you can now connect both accounts and set up creative automation.

Other frequently used integrations include Teachable, Shopify, Squarespace, WooCommerce, and Stripe.

In addition to these integrations, the software enables you to access hundreds of apps more via Zapier. For example, you can add new leads from a Facebook Lead, add Typeform email entries, or get new Squarespace form respondents.

Finally, if you’re skilled enough to build your own integration, this email marketing software provides you with all you need to make it work perfectly with its accessible API docs.

Ease of Use and Interface

The ConvertKit app is quite an easy tool to use. It also features a clean and sleek interface that is very responsive and simple to navigate.

When you first log in to the program, it asks you if you are migrating from similar software. If you are, it allows you to import all your data from that platform in a couple of easy steps. It also asks if you already have a website and then goes ahead to set up your options accordingly.

Once you’re set-up, it provides you with a checklist to get you started with its email tools. In addition to that, it presents you with loads of materials to help you get used to the program. Whenever you use a new feature for the first time, it displays a demo video to show you exactly how it works and how to get the most out of it.

A common complaint in ConvertKit user reviews is that the platform doesn’t have a main dashboard. There is also no ‘Create new email’ option to get you started on a new email campaign. You have to choose between the ‘Broadcast’ or ‘Sequences’

Customer Support

One thing we have to commend ConvertKit on is its wide selection of support options.

On the off chance that you need to contact its support team, you get both live chat and email support to customers on all subscription plans. Both channels are accessible between 8 am to 8 pm EST, Monday through Friday, along with limited services during evenings and weekends. I’d love to see options for other time zones, too.

We found the support team to be very responsive, friendly, and helpful. They’re often praised by users in their ConvertKit reviews.

If you choose the Creator Pro plan, you get priority support from the support team. This means that you’ll get a response within 15 minutes to any request submitted during the stated working hours.

ConvertKit features a rich knowledge base with articles and videos teaching covering all from getting started on the platform, to designing emails and working with integrations. It also has free online video workshops, bite-sized tutorials, and how-to guides available to all subscribers. Moreso, subscribers can join any ConvertKit webinar whenever one is hosted.

Finally, this platform has an active online community where you can get peer-to-peer support.

ConvertKit vs AWeber

ConvertKit vs AWeber - the most common comparison in the email marketing field!

They both have ecommerce and automation capabilities, sign-up form and landing page builders, and customizable email templates. That said, there are a couple of ways that AWeber performs better than ConvertKit.

For one, AWeber features a tool called Smart Designer. You can copy and paste the URL of your website, and it would automatically create an email template that matches your site’s branding. This cuts down hours of customization.

AWeber is also more affordable. Its starting price of $19/month for its Pro plan makes it more attractive than ConvertKit’s starting cost of $29/month.

Of course, ConvertKit has its benefits.

For example, it allows headline A/B testing to help improve open rates and impact your bottom line positively. ConvertKit also comes with better email, landing page, and sign-up form templates. More so, it offers optional opt-in sign-up forms with its landing pages, as well as free and seamless migration services from your previous email marketing tool.

In the end, which is better is down to the features you need.

ConvertKit vs GetResponse

ConvertKit vs GetResponse is another popular discussion topic.

GetResponse and ConvertKit have both recently evolved from being mere email marketing tools and now function as more rounded solutions. They both come with built-in eCommerce tools, visual conversion funnels, and email marketing capabilities.

GetResponse though seems to have progressed a bit more than ConvertKit, as it now allows its users to host webinars directly from its platform. It also allows users to create, buy and manage their paid Facebook, Instagram, and Google ads directly from its software.

As if that isn’t impressive enough, GetResponse features more integration options, web push notifications, and a drag-and-drop tool. It is also the more affordable option between the two.

So, if we have to choose, GetResponse wins this one.

ConvertKit vs MailChimp

MailChimp has been in the market much longer than ConvertKit, so it is easily the more popular one. A lot of its features, however, are outdated and leave users with confusing options that could easily be simplified and streamlined.

ConvertKit on the other hand, offers fewer, more focused features. The automation and list management are its strongest points.

On the integration front, MailChimp takes the cake with more than 180 integration options. Unfortunately, though, it doesn’t integrate with Shopify, which is one of the biggest ecommerce platforms. Thankfully, ConvertKit has got you covered.

MailChimp also comes with close to 100 email templates, ranging from newsletter to holiday emails. It also has blank layout options for you to apply your own designs. In contrast, ConvertKit only offers three options for email designs – text only, classic and modern

There’s no clear winner - it will, once again, depend on your needs.

ConvertKit Review - Verdict

Converkit is a very effective email marketing tool for content creators. It is easy to use and comes with a good selection of features to grow your subscriber list and increase sales.

Its automation feature is particularly noteworthy, as it saves users a lot of time. Its ecommerce and email design capabilities, along with its free subscription plan, are also really impressive.

Just like any other software though, this one has its weaknesses. For one, there is no ConvertKit mobile app. This is rather disappointing, considering the fact that many of its competitors, including GetResponse and Mailchimp, have one.

Its customer support, while effective, is also limited to EST working hours only. This means that customers outside of the EST timezone may struggle to reach the team.

Finally, the lack of creative or fully designed templates may discourage some people from using the program. Although the company’s decision to only feature simple email designs is backed by its research, many users would probably appreciate the chance to make that choice for themselves.
