FastestVPN is a VPN vendor that entered the scene in 2017. It’s fairly new, but it has made lots of noise with clever marketing. Adding “fastest” in its name has been a surefire way to get noticed.
On Trustpilot alone, it has received at least 300 FastestVPN reviews with an average rating of 3.7. Sixty-nine percent of Trustpilot users have considered its VPN service excellent. The company has been the subject of 11 testimonials on Capterra and G2, getting rated 3.9 and 3.1 stars, respectively.
The FastestVPN Android and iOS apps have been downloaded more than 50,000 times. More or less 1,300 commenters on Google Play have given it merely 2.6 stars on average. On the Apple Store, the app has gotten 3.7 stars out of 302 FastestVPN reviews.
There’s no questioning the popularity of this VPN. But no matter how we slice the hundreds of FastestVPN reviews, it’s clear that it’s not the darling of users.
But do they really reflect the performance of the so-called fastest VPN on the market?
This many users can’t be wrong, but we didn’t want to take their word for it. We tested the service ourselves to see whether it lives up to its name.
Here are the basics of FastestVPN.
This VPN is one of the most versatile around. It works on the following devices:
- Personal computers
- Smart TVs
- Digital media players
- Game consoles
You can choose from up to 18 products right out of the gate.
Other than the FastestVPN iOS and Android clients, you can install FastestVPN Windows, macOS, Amazon Fire TV Stick, and Android Box apps. The other platforms this VPN supports need manual configuration. But the company provides readily available setup tutorials.
In addition, you can download FastestVPN Firefox and Chrome extensions.
With a single FastestVPN subscription, you can enjoy up to ten simultaneous connections. This limit is good enough to cover the electronic devices two average Americans own.
This VPN vendor doesn’t offer a family plan, but you can buy additional slots. You can have up to 20 more FastestVPN devices on top of those originally coming with a subscription.
To find out how much each extra slot will set you back, skip to the Price section of this FastestVPN review.
This VPN has no data cap. You can use it at home and outside when you have to connect to unsecured public networks without worrying about the bandwidth you’re using.
What’s the merit of turning FastestVPN on while connected to your Wi-Fi network?
Internet throttling avoidance.
Your ISP (internet service provider) may be monitoring your browsing activity and intentionally slow down your connection speed when visiting certain sites.
FastestVPN can obscure your DNS (Domain Name System) requests, keeping your ISP in the dark. It can protect you from internet throttling and stabilize your connection speed whatever you do online.
Unlimited Server Switching
You can use switch between any of the FastestVPN servers as often as you want.
FastestVPN Smart Connect
With this feature, you’ll be able to use the fastest server at the time of connection with one click.
FastestVPN Kill Switch
A kill switch prevents traffic data leakage in case the VPN connection drops. When enabled, the FastestVPN kill switch keeps your device offline until your VPN reconnects.
This functionality makes sure that traffic from a specific app always runs through the VPN, even if the app isn’t open. It sounds like split tunneling, but it’s different. Split tunneling, on the other hand, enables you to exclude certain apps from connecting to a VPN service.
FastestVPN DNS Leak Protection
FastestVPN delivers reliable DNS leak protection. This helps to keep your online activity hidden from snoopers.
WebRTC Leak Protection
Using the FastestVPN extension, you can prevent Chrome or Firefox from broadcasting your real IP (internet protocol) address to websites.
Browsers use WebRTC (Web Real-Time Communication) to transmit audio and video data to devices. This open-source technology eliminates the need to install plugins or apps to facilitate the exchange of media communications. But it’s also a major vulnerability.
If you set up the FastestVPN Chrome extension or the Firefox extension, you can block WebRTC and prevent any IP leakage.
On top of that, the company says that its VPN servers are available almost all the time.
FastestVPN Advanced Features
FastestVPN has value-added capabilities. As follows are the extra security features you can enjoy.
This VPN service is one of the few with a built-in NAT (Network Address Translation) firewall.
The technicalities of NAT firewalls are too much to explain in this FastestVPN review. But to put it simply, it prevents unsolicited, potentially dangerous incoming traffic from reaching your FastestVPN devices.
With this ad-blocking capability, you can surf the Web without being burdened with different forms of ads.
This functionality provides an extra layer of defense against pieces of malicious software you may encounter online. The FastestVPN app isn’t an antivirus through and through, so you shouldn’t primarily use it as such. Nevertheless, this anti-malware feature is helpful if you don’t have one installed.
Internxt Cloud Storage
This file storage provider has a zero-knowledge policy and supports end-to-end encryption. Only you would be able to access and decrypt the data you store on its servers.
Usually, Internxt sells its annual 2TB plan at €8.99 (roughly $10.94) a month. So, its value sits at over $130.
This extra FastestVPN cloud storage service is available for a limited time only, though.
FastestVPN Server Locations
FastestVPN has a global fleet of more than 350 VPN servers. Its network covers 52 locations in over 40 countries.
The United States houses the highest number of FastestVPN servers. But Europe is the most represented region in this VPN vendor’s network.
This is not an anomaly.
Generally, the bulk of VPN providers’ hardware is in the States and Europe. This standard strategy helps most streaming service subscribers beat geo-restrictions and access censored content libraries.
While FastestVPN doesn’t have the largest server network, it has been expanding its global footprint aggressively.
So, is FastestVPN the fastest VPN around?
We put this service to test how it would affect our internet speed from our HQ in Central Europe. We connected to its London, Dallas, and Sydney servers.
Below are the results.
- Download speed: -77%
- Upload speed: -4%
- Download speed: -64%
- Upload speed: -17%
- Download speed: -99%
- Upload speed: -99%
Surprisingly, the FastestVPN app slowed down our connection significantly. The decline wasn’t a big deal since our fast internet was still good enough to handle most online activities. However, there are much speedier VPNs available.
This VPN wasn’t a viable option when we had to connect to its hardware housed halfway around the world. Equally important, our ping increased too.
FastestVPN Privacy and Jurisdiction
FastestVPN is based in the Cayman Islands, a self-governing British Overseas Territory in the Caribbean. Although its LinkedIn page says that its HQ is in Los Angeles, it conducts its everyday operations outside Uncle Sam’s jurisdiction.
The Cayman Islands’ head of state is the British Monarch. But it has its own premier as a head of government and enjoys internal autonomy since its constitution came into effect in 2009. Meanwhile, native Caymanians elect the members of the territory’s Parliament.
So, why is it important that the UK Prime Minister has no direct control over the policies of the archipelago’s government? It’s because the UK is a core member of the Five Eyes Alliance.
The Five Eyes Alliance is a group of English-speaking countries that work together regarding intelligence sharing. Collectively, they’ve been found guilty of rampant internet surveillance, eavesdropping on the online communications of their citizens.
The Five Eyes Alliance has been around since the ‘50s. And its number has grown to 14 over time. The other nine Western nations aren’t as committed to exchanging intelligence as the original five are. Nevertheless, all of them violate the internet privacy of their peoples.
VPNs are legal across the jurisdictions of the members of the Fourteen Eyes Alliance. The same goes with Japan, South Korea, Singapore, and Israel, which have been suspected of working with this coalition one way or another.
The authorities in any of these 18 countries may be able to subpoena the records of VPN vendors in aid of investigation.
Additionally, Russia, the United Arab Emirates, and Turkey are part of the FastestVPN server list. These regimes have a bad reputation for censoring the internet and restricting the use of VPNs.
This VPN vendor’s hardware in Hong Kong is at the doorstep of the Chinese Communist Party. China could confiscate or compromise it if FastestVPN doesn’t play by its rules.
Is the FastestVPN app a safe bet?
We think so.
In other words, It doesn’t store data such as FastestVPN DNS requests, traffic destinations, streaming histories, and downloaded files. It doesn’t save the payment info of its users either. This way, it can have plausible deniability if a government wants to investigate any of its users.
But FastestVPN does collect subscriber email addresses and the traffic data of its site visitors for account maintenance and analytics purposes.
FastestVPN Security and Protocols
The company secures online communications using 256-bit AES encryption, the most reliable of its kind in today’s standard. With this type of encryption, your traffic data can be as hard to hack as top-secret military documents.
Moreover, you can choose from a wide FastestVPN protocol range. The following are the tunneling protocols this VPN supports:
- IKEv2 (Internet Key Exchange v2)
- FastestVPN OpenVPN in TCP (Transmission Control Protocol) and UDP (User Datagram Protocol) modes
- L2TP/IPSec (Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol over Internet Protocol Security)
- PPTP (Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol)
More choice is usually better. But in this case, you should think twice before using PPTP or L2TP/IPSec.
PPTP is outdated and has serious cybersecurity vulnerabilities.
And while L2TP is known for its solid security, it does raise privacy concerns. The National Security Agency is one of its co-developers, so the US government may be using some backdoors to access L2TP/IPSec traffic.
Additionally, this L2TP is closed-source. Impartial cybersecurity experts can’t openly assess its integrity.
We recommend that you stick with either FastestVPN OpenVPN or IKEv2. These tunneling protocols deliver the best balance between security and speed and are suitable for most activities.
Unlike other FastestVPN protocol options, these two are available in FastestVPN for Mac, Windows, iOS, and Android.
But if you’re looking for FastestVPN WireGuard, you’ll be disappointed. This VPN provider hasn’t implemented this protocol yet.
FastestVPN Leak Test Results
We ran a couple of IP, DNS, and WebRTC leak tests. We were happy to see that the results were consistently negative. You won’t have to worry about your IP leaking when using this VPN.
FastestVPN and Streaming Services
FastestVPN promises to bypass the geo-restrictions set in place by multiple streaming platforms, including Netflix, HBO Max, Amazon Prime, Disney+, Hulu, and BBC iPlayer.
Furthermore, this VPN vendor has streaming-optimized servers in the US, the UK, and India. Judging by its latest FastestVPN server list, it has hardware in locations with the most popular Netflix libraries.
So, we put it to the test.
With this VPN, we could stream American and Canadian Netflix versions from outside of North America.
How Good Is FastestVPN for Torrenting?
FastestVPN has Unix-based servers dedicated to P2P (peer-to-peer) file sharing. Although almost all of its network supports torrenting, it doesn’t recommend the following FastestVPN server locations for this purpose:
- Hong Kong
- South Korea
FastestVPN’s no-log policy is good news to users too. If you inadvertently download copyrighted material, it would be hard for its owner to identify, track, and punish you. The built-in anti-malware can also safeguard your hardware when you accidentally download malicious files.
Can FastestVPN Bypass Geoblocks?
Yes, it can.
Leak tests show that it can successfully mask your IP address, which can reveal your location. Likewise, this VPN has optimized servers for P2P sharing and streaming. They can reduce your chances of getting busted by restrictive site owners and controlling governments.
Additionally, FastestVPN operates in Russia, Turkey, the Emirates, and Hong Kong. This service can help you access content reserved only for internet users in these places.
Ease of Use
FastestVPN Firefox and Chrome extensions, as well as VPN clients, are readily available for download. But you can’t use them without a paid subscription due to the lack of a FastestVPN free edition.
Once you buy a premium plan, you can set up the software and use FastestVPN to secure your traffic and mask your IP address. The user interface of its clients is highly intuitive. Whatever device you’re on, FastestVPN is easy to navigate.
FastestVPN offers various customer support options.
The company’s live chat representatives are on standby 24/7. If you don’t have time to talk with someone in real-time, you can email your concerns instead.
Some information on the FastestVPN site needs further clarification; the FastestVPN lifetime subscription is a perfect case in point. That’s why live chat support is convenient when seeking immediate assistance.
You may not get a rep instantly due to high volumes of queries and agent availability. But you usually won’t have to wait for more than 10 minutes. The chat is feature-packed. You can send emojis, upload attachments, and get a copy of conversations after you end each session.
Moreover, FastestVPN has a wealth of setup tutorials. These guides are beneficial when installing the software on platforms or devices that require manual configuration.
This VPN vendor has abundant reading material. You can check out its blog to learn about different topics like cybersecurity or internet privacy. To get bite-size answers to common questions, visit its FAQ page.
To use FastestVPN, you can choose from three standard subscriptions. All of them have the same features, but the price differs depending on the length of the plan.
Here’s how much each one costs:
- One month: $10.00/month
- One year: $2.49/month (billed $29.95 upfront)
- Three years: $1.11/month (billed $39.95 upfront)
At the time of writing this FastestVPN review, the company is running two deals. There is a three-year plan for $25 ($0.70/month) and a five-year subscription for $40 ($0.66/month). They are slightly difficult to find on the website, however.
While these may sound good, there is another deal that’s even cheaper. The FastestVPN lifetime plan is currently available for only $20 for a limited time only.
Additionally, all of these plans include a connection to ten devices. But you can buy an additional 20 slots if necessary. The cost of this add-on depends on your chosen subscription.
Here’s the pricing:
- Monthly: $2.00/slot
- Annual: $1.50/slot
- Triennial or Quinquennial : $1.00/slot
To make a purchase, you can use PayPal or any credit card that bears the logo of:
- American Express
There’s no FastestVPN free version available. The absence of an obligation-free FastestVPN trial means you have to buy a subscription before using the software. The company may offer a free trial down the road. But for now, you need to make an upfront payment for testing it out.
The good news is that all subscriptions come with a 15-day money-back guarantee. If you wish to discontinue it, you can ask for a full refund. After those 15 days, you can’t cancel an active subscription, nor can you request a partial refund.
Likewise, all plans auto-renew. To avoid getting charged, you have to turn off auto-renewal at least 24 hours before an active subscription’s term ends.
FastestVPN Review – Verdict
The mixed FastestVPN reviews you can find all over the internet aren’t unfounded. This VPN service has some clear positives and negatives.
Its versatility makes it extremely useful for most people. We can see its strong conviction regarding its zero log policy through its choice of location for its headquarters. Besides, its wide range of customer support options is worth noteworthy. And the multiple free security features are a definite plus.
Sadly, FastestVPN isn’t the fastest VPN on the market. But you’ll find it usable if you have a rapid base internet speed.
Although its small network of servers can limit your options, this weakness may no longer be an issue in the near future.
The lack of free trial and relatively short money-back guarantee might make it less competitive than most VPN providers. But it’s not necessarily a bad thing.
Overall, the service is not perfect. But most of its downsides are not major deal-breakers.
FastestVPN is a VPN vendor based in the Cayman Islands, which has been around since 2017. Apart from having a network of over 350 VPN servers covering more than 40 jurisdictions, it has standard VPN capabilities and value-added security features.
Yes, it does. It has optimized hardware for accessing Netflix’s US content library from overseas.
FastestVPN is a decent service since it doesn’t leak traffic data. But you’ll need a fast internet connection speed to begin to be able to do your favorite online activities unencumbered. For more insight into this VPN service, read the entirety of our FastestVPN review.
