Best for: Unlocking restricted libraries on streaming platforms
HideIPVPN is not widely known. Much of that has to do with its modest network of servers. Still, the VPN service excels in some essential areas.
In terms of security, HideIPVPN rolls with the top guns. The provider employs industry-standard encryption to keep your data protected from interception.
The VPN service also impresses when it comes to performance. I ran tests to see if it would hurt my speeds. Let’s say I was pleasantly surprised.
HideIPVPN is compatible with a wide range of devices and platforms. It has clients for the major operating systems and offers compatibility for routers and game consoles.
It is not immediately clear where the HideIPVPN headquarters is located. Some HideIPVPN reviews point to Moldova. CEO, Adrian Crismaru is Moldovan, so it makes sense.
To make sure, I contacted the vendor’s customer support via Live Chat. It turns out that the company has its office in the United States.
If you’re well versed in matters of internet privacy, you probably have a raised eyebrow at this — the US is a premier member of the Five Eyes Alliance, after all.
That is not enough to panic, however.
HideIPVPN claims a strict no-log policy. Is that position really as uncompromising as the company claims? Or is there a reason to be worried here?
To answer these questions, keep on reading this HideIPVPN review.
HideIPVPN offers unlimited bandwidth and three simultaneous device connections.
And if that’s not enough to impress you, here’s more:
A kill switch is an essential element of a VPN service. Its role is to safeguard your data whenever the connection inadvertently drops. That way, network access is totally cut off from your device if there is a disconnection for any reason.
This service doesn’t come with the typical kill switch tool. The Application Killer is only available on HideIPVPN for Windows and Mac, stops specific programs when there is a network interruption. You have to manually add in the apps.
There is an upside to this version.
There could be apps that do not give away any sensitive data and which you would prefer to stay online. Application Killer takes care of that.
The VPN shines here. You can establish online security on a wide variety of platforms and devices.
HideIPVPN is compatible with devices that run on:
- Mac OS
In addition, you can use the VPN on TP-Link, D-Link, and DD-WRT internet routers.
You can also get HideIPVPN for Firefox, Chrome, and Opera.
Note that the feature set for each version of the app is not exactly the same across the board. For instance, you only get to take advantage of the money-back guarantee offer if you have a HideIPVPN desktop app installed.
There are guides on the company’s website to help VPN newbies set up the different clients on their devices.
Simultaneous Connections on Multiple Devices
HideIPVPN limits users to a maximum of three simultaneous connections on a single subscription plan.
This is significantly less than what the top VPN providers offer. For context, the industry average sits at around five. Private Internet Access has a cap of 10 connections at the same time, while IPVanish removes a device limit entirely.
If you are not sure what VPN server to choose, HideIPVPN makes the job easier for you. When you press the button, Smart Location automatically picks the nearest and fastest server to you. This is a neat tool if speed is your focus.
Smart Location is not always accurate. While trying it out for this HideIPVPN review, it chose a distant server over a closer one a few times. Still, it does a perfect job optimizing speed most of the time.
There is no cap on the amount of data you can use with the HideIPVPN app. This makes it an excellent choice for binge-watching your favorite TV shows or gaming.
But this does not make the vendor special. Several other VPN providers have unlimited bandwidth, as our VPN reviews will show. Even some free ones.
HideIPVPN Advanced Features
There’s no Double VPN or Stealth VPN, but HideIPVPN does have a few advanced features up its sleeve.
A Smart DNS is a service that helps you access geo-blocked online content. Unlike a VPN, it will not change your IP address or encrypt your internet connection.
It simply adjusts the DNS of your device, directing queries to its own DNS servers.
HideIPVPN comes bundled with the feature, but there’s also an option of purchasing that separately. Smart DNS works excellently and will unblock several streaming platforms, including Netflix, Prime Video, and HBO.
There is no limit set on the number of devices you can connect to the service.
Unfortunately, it is not available on HideIPVPN for mobile.
HideIPVPN Servers and Locations
Currently, the vendor’s network comprises 22 servers spread across 10 countries. In contrast, ExpressVPN has 3000+ in more than 90 countries.
More servers mean that you have plenty of options to switch to in peak periods.
Here are some of the options:
Most of the locations span across Europe, with the US, Canada, and Singapore representing the only exceptions.
The server spread can present an obvious problem to users living in regions without any close by:
- Central America
- South America
- Most of Asia
As a fast rule, the closer a server is to your location, the faster your connection speed. The Smart Location tool can help out here to pick out the best option.
HideIPVPN servers are most concentrated in the UK and US, with each country having five and six each.
There are many compliments about the speeds in HideIPVN user reviews.
So, I had to see for myself.
First, I established my base connection without the VPN, using the online test tool Speedtest by Ookla.
Next, I chose a Los Angeles-based server in the US and connected it to the VPN.
My internet speed took a hit immediately. But it was nowhere as bad as I had expected. HideIPVPN only caused a 6% drop in download speeds. Upload speed took a negligible hit.
To be sure, I switched over to a server in the United Kingdom.
This time, there was a more significant impact on speed — 28%. Still very good.
Then I went with the HideIPVPN server located in Canada.
Overall, my speed test results solidly confirm that HideIPVPN is among the fastest VPNs.
HideIPVPN Privacy and Jurisdiction
Is HideIPVPN safe?
Well, it is headquartered in the United States. The US is a member of the Five Eyes Alliance, an intelligence-sharing network dating back to WWII.
Thankfully, it seems HideIPVPN has a zero traffic logs policy in place for that, according to its website.
Not quite a strict no-log policy after all.
An independent audit would make a world of difference to help privacy-conscious users find HideIPVPN safe. The company has not opted for one so far, however.
HideIPVPN Security and Protocols
Apart from speed, another area where HideIPVPN really shines is in terms of security. The VPN uses AES 256-bit encryption to safeguard users’ data. This military-grade encryption scrambles your online data, keeping it away from any third parties.
In terms of tunneling protocols, you get a wealth of options. HideIPVPN lets users choose from:
SSTP is selected by default, but for most users, OpenVPN would be the best choice. It is the most popular protocol, as it offers the optimal combination of security and speed.
HideIPVPN Leak Test Results
HideIPVPN comes with a DNS leak protection feature. For some reason, it is one the VPN service will let you toggle on or off.
Using IPLeak, I ran an IP and DNS leak test to see how safe my location stayed when I used this VPN.
The test results came out good:
HideIPVPN and Streaming Services
This tool works like a charm for bypassing geo-restrictions. With HideIPVPN for Windows, I tried to unblock streaming platforms to access their content.
Unblocking Netflix was instant and smooth. I used a US server. The viewing experience was smooth too, and I did not experience any buffering.
I had no trouble accessing Prime Video and Hulu while connected to US and UK servers. You might see users complaining in HideIPVPN reviews that they had difficulty unblocking Disney+. I, however, had no such issues.
Altogether, I found HideIPVPN to be a streaming-friendly VPN solution.
How Good Is HideIPVPN for Torrenting?
The best VPNs for torrenting have several servers optimized for the purpose. HideIPVPN only lets you use a number of them — located in the Netherlands, Lithuania, Luxembourg, and Germany.
The upside is that you get unlimited bandwidth for downloads and sharing. Also, you can use any client, including BitTorrent.
The vendor promises you’ll stay anonymous.
To sum up, you can torrent with HideIPVPN, but on a limited scale.
Can HideIPVPN Bypass Geoblocks?
Some countries frown upon VPN usage and have put up measures to restrict them.
Case in point - the Great FireWall of China.
Unfortunately, the VPN-inhibiting technologies used by those countries are largely effective. So, you need an obfuscated VPN server.
HideIPVPN does not come with this feature. If you’re planning on a trip to one of those countries, there are other options.
Ease of Use
HideIPVPN for PC looks absolutely the same as the mobile version of the app. The design for all OSs is virtually the same.
It is a simple-looking app and is as user-friendly as it seems. The design is simple and modern, with no clutter. There is no steep learning curve, so even newbies who don’t know how to use HideIPVPN can adapt in no time.
You can choose a server location or let the VPN decide for you with Smart Location.
The small array of customizable options are not enough to overwhelm. DNS leak and kill switch features can be put on and off. The same goes for other features like auto-start and automatic connection on login.
The HideIPVPN Chrome, Firefox, and Opera browser extensions offer much less functionality and are even easier to use.
HideIPVPN’s support team can be contacted through email, ticketing, or live chat. There is no phone line. This leaves live chat as the fastest means to reach the company.
In addition, the company has a robust FAQs page and knowledge base. There are set-up guides to help you have HideIPVPN running on several platforms, such as Linux, routers, etc.
As for getting a response from customer care representatives, I found it wildly inconsistent.
The website claims that support is available 24/7. That looked to be the case when I first sent an inquiry through live chat — I received feedback almost immediately.
Yet, the next couple of times I tried, there was simply no response to my messages. Even though I waited for several hours.
Overall, it’s clear that HideIPVPN’s client service cannot be depended on to resolve issues quickly.
New users can test out all the VPN has to offer, taking advantage of its 24-hour free trial. HideIPVPN does not have a fully free version, however.
The premium plan comes with Smart DNS and proxy bundled. Alternatively, you can pay for the Smart DNS service separately to enjoy its unblocking capabilities.
All the features on HideIPVPN premium plans are present on the free trial version.
The VPN + Smart DNS + Proxy plan is available in three billing options. At the time of writing this HideIPVPN review, there is a discount.
- Monthly - $6.99/month
- Quarterly - $5.99/month
- Annually - $4.99/month
Payments can be facilitated using a wide range of methods, including bitcoin, PayPal, Visa, and Mastercard.
HideIPVPN offers a 30-day money-back guarantee.
In reality, it is not quite so easy to claim a refund. The company’s Terms of Service grant sheds a different light on things:
There are several frankly ridiculous caveats.
For instance, simply connecting to all 22 servers precludes you from receiving a refund. HideIPVPN for Android and iOS users also have no chance of enjoying the money-back guarantee.
“We do not refund for speed issues...”
HideIPVPN Review - Verdict
HideIPVPN doesn’t really stand out in terms of features. But it has some pros.
It is surprisingly fast. Drops in speeds you can expect here are relatively negligible. The VPN service also excels in terms of security features. And you will be able to unblock streaming platforms, including Netflix, Prime Video, and Hulu.
However, the research for this HideIPVPN review shows that the company falls short in a few other areas. Its network of servers is small and limiting. Additionally, the vendor operates from the US, not the most data privacy-friendly nation.
So, is HideIPVPN a good VPN?
It is not a bad one. The pros just balance out with the cons for me.
