What Is KnownHost?

KnownHost is a privately held web hosting provider headquartered in Alabama. It serves customers from over 150 countries, with data centers in the US and the Netherlands.

Two entrepreneurs named Justin Sauers and Pavel Malyavko founded KnownHost in 2006. They met while working at Parallels, a highly recognized software company.

As of 2006, web hosting was nowhere as ubiquitous as it is now. Setting up a website without dedicated servers was difficult, and KnownHost sought to make it simple.

The company grew steadily and now serves thousands of enterprises across the globe. Its customers include medical billing, cybersecurity, and retail companies, among others. Individuals constitute a significant part of its customer base as well.

Infrastructure and Network

It’ll be pointless to review any web host and not provide details about its underlying infrastructure, so here it is.

The company operates three data centers – two in the US (Seattle and Atlanta) and one in the Netherlands (Amsterdam). Each KnownHost data center is connected to multiple 10-gigabit backbones to increase network speed.

They utilize multiple Tier 1 Internet Service Protocol (ISP) providers and some Tier 2 networks. The former include Level 3, NTT, and Tata Communications. The latter comprise Specture Networks and the Seattle Internet Exchange.

Security is an essential consideration for physical data centers. It’ll interest you to know that every KnownHost data center is protected 24/7 by on-site personnel. There’s also all-around video surveillance with a minimum of 90-days of video retention.

KnownHost Shared Hosting Features

Different web hosts have varying features, but some stand out above the rest. The KnownHost shared hosting reviews online are overwhelmingly positive. So, let’s see what the hype is about.

DDoS Protection

One of the most common cyberattacks websites face is distributed denial of service (DDoS). This type of attack entails flooding a target website with traffic from a group of hijacked internet-connected devices. DDoS attacks can be devastating to a website owner. They can make your site inaccessible or drive up your hosting costs.

The good thing is that KnownHost provides protection against DDoS attacks. The company uses multiple layers of identification and filtering hardware to detect attack patterns and prevent them from harming your site. You can also personally protect your website by restricting the number of allowable log-in attempts.

Backups

It’s essential for every webmaster to back up their content, as no web host is immune to data loss incidents. If you keep regular backups, you can always restore them if there’s any such incident. Otherwise, the loss would be permanent.

Automatic backup is one of the best features we stumbled upon when researching for this KnownHost shared hosting review. The hosting outlet creates automatic backups of customers’ content at a frequency depending on the plan they pay for. People on the Standard and Professional plans get daily or weekly backups, while Premium plan users get 12-hour backups.

You can request your backup files at any time by contacting the KnownHost support team. It could be a full account restoration or limited to specific backup files. This service is free for people subscribed to shared hosting plans but costs money for the managed VPS options.

Load Balancer

To provide reliable hosting, KnownHost employs a well-known technique called load balancing. This technique entails distributing traffic loads across different servers to make their overall processing more efficient.

Let’s say five interconnected servers each have a 20GB RAM capacity. One of them is at 19GB full and is struggling to keep up with more users. The KnownHost load balancer will route more user requests to the other servers in the network to avoid overloading that first one.

With an extensive server network, KnownHost can balance server loads quickly and easily. It’s a simple but effective way of ensuring customers’ websites experience minimal downtimes.

SSL Certificates

SSL certificates are a must-have to protect your website and have a good security reputation. The SSL provides an encrypted connection between a web server and the end user’s browser. It also authenticates your website’s identity, proving to a web browser that it’s secure.

There are different types of SSL certificates KnownHost offers. They include single domain, multi-domain, and wildcard.

You can get them from three external providers: Comodo, RapidSSL, and GeoTrust. They cost between $30 and $500 annually.

Domain Registration

Every website requires a domain name, and a custom one makes yours look more professional. KnownHost lets customers buy personalized domain names. Hosting your website and domain name at the same place is pretty convenient but also makes linking them up much easier.

One drawback we observed is that KnownHost offers few domain extensions – about three dozen in total. You won’t find a lot of extensions outside the most popular ones; COM, CO, NET, ORG, INFO, and BIZ.

KnownHost domain registration is easy. There’s a search bar where you can check if a domain name is available. If it is, any registered user can buy it straight away.

The hosting vendor offers free domain privacy protection that blocks your contact information from the public WHOIS database. This way, spammers and marketers can’t harvest your email address and bombard you with solicitations as many domain owners experience.

Domain Transfer

If you don’t want to buy a new one, you can use an existing domain from another registrar. Keep in mind, however, that it has to be at least 60 days old.

To authorize a domain transfer, KnownHost will request an EPP code from the current registrar’s control panel. Only the owner of that particular domain can access the code. Once you provide it, KnownHost sends a link to the associated email to authorize the transfer. Click on the link, and the transfer should be finalized within five days

CDN

A content delivery network (CDN) refers to a geographically distributed group of servers working together to quickly deliver internet content. It entails distributing a website’s content across global servers so users in whichever region can access the closest one. A CDN makes your website load faster than it would without one.

There are just three KnownHost data centers containing the company’s servers in the US and Europe. Hence, someone in, let’s say, Asia will wait longer to access content from those servers than someone in the US. Since KnownHost doesn’t have its own content delivery network, it provides direct integration with Cloudflare, which is one of the best CDN providers on the market

Cloudflare has dozens of servers across the world. Every KnownHost user can utilize them (for a fee) to make their website load faster.

Email

It looks more professional having an email address with your personalized domain than a generic one. KnownHost lets you host your own email using your unique domains. There’s no limit to the number of custom addresses you can create if you pay for the highest plan.

KnownHost email interface

Many email applications have direct integration with KnownHost, so you can afford to be selective. The respective applications include RainLoop, RoundCube, and KnownHost’s native tool.

Newsletters are in vogue nowadays, and KnownHost also lets you create and manage them. It has direct integrations with several newsletter applications, including Dada Mail, phpList, and Webinsta Maillist

Proactive Monitoring

Webmasters need to constantly watch out for critical metrics affecting their websites and detect or, when possible, rectify any arising issues. The two main types of monitoring are proactive and reactive. The former detects problems before they happen, while the latter refers to diagnosis after a problem has already occurred.

KnownHost employs proactive monitoring to track specific metrics and ensure all is well with customers’ websites. These insights include CPU and RAM usage and database connection. For a fee, the hosting platform provides 24/7 monitoring and will automatically alert you if there are potential issues.

SSH

The Secure Shell Protocol provides a secure way to access an unsecured network. The KnownHost SSH feature lets its dedicated server users manage their servers remotely.

This protocol isn’t of any use to shared hosting users. But, it’s something to keep in mind if you want to step up to dedicated hosting.

WordPress Hosting

WordPress is the most popular content management system (CMS) worldwide, as it powers over 40% of all websites. KnownHost provides managed WordPress hosting services, so you can easily build your own website.

You can install WordPress with a single click and have your site running in relatively little time. KnownHost provides up to 100GB of SSD storage and unlimited bandwidth for WordPress sites. However, its plans are limited to just one website. You’d need to pay for another hosting package if you want to create more.

The WordPress control panel is easy to use if you want to create a basic website. However, there’s a steep learning curve if you require customizations.

cPanel

cPanel is an industry-standard software, providing a graphical interface that simplifies the process of hosting a website. It offers a straightforward way for web administrators to manage their sites.

KnownHost's cPanel

Every registered KnownHost user can install the cPanel software. You can do many things through its dashboard, e.g., creating MySQL databases, modifying DNS, adding new subdomains, etc. It’s one of the most popular web administration tools, so you’ll be in good company if you adopt it.

App Installer

A valuable feature of KnownHost is that you can install a broad range of external applications on your hosting account. WordPress and cPanel are two examples we’ve covered, but there are many more: Magento, Joomla, Prestashop, WHMCS, etc.

KnownHost uses a proprietary app installer named Softaculous. It’s an auto-installer that lets you deploy applications with a single click. It supports more than 350 external apps.

KnownHost Migrations

Migrating a website from one hosting platform to another can be a challenging task. To ease the burden, KnownHost lets users migrate free of charge if they use the cPanel, Plesk, or DirectAdmin web administration tools. Otherwise, you’d have to hire the company’s migration team for $35/ hourly per domain.

Uptime

KnownHost promotes a 99.9% uptime. And from our observations, that rings true. The company’s servers are up the vast majority of the time. Exceptions include hardware failures, cyber-attacks, and human misconfiguration

There are also specific things you can do to minimize the probability of downtime. The first is to carefully test any website changes for errors, mainly when they involve custom codes. Secondly, ensure to allocate sufficient memory and computing power for any newly added feature to prevent overloading.

Speed

We conducted some tests to determine the KnownHost’s speed, and the results were encouraging.

The average page loading time we measured was 1.1 seconds. The individual speeds varied from as low as 500 milliseconds in the US to 1.9 seconds in Brazil. That’s expected since KnownHost has two data centers in the US and none in the Brazilian region. That’s why we can’t overemphasize the benefits of a content delivery network in increasing your website’s speed.

Shared Hosting Services

Shared hosting is a type of hosting where multiple customers split computing and storage resources from a single server. It’s a cost-effective solution, but it’s not the best in terms of speed and performance. Let’s have a look at the shared hosting plans KnownHost offers.

Basic

If you pick this plan, KnownHost will support 1 website with 5GB of cloud storage. You’ll also get 5 email accounts, 2 MySQL databases, and unlimited bandwidth

This option is ideal for individuals or small businesses with low-traffic needs.

Standard

The Standard plan lets users host 5 websites with up to 20GB of cloud storage. It also includes 25 email accounts, 5 MySQL databases, and unlimited bandwidth

It’s suitable for mid-sized enterprises with significant but not enormous traffic needs.

Professional

The Professional plan lets you host unlimited websites with unlimited KnownHost cloud storage, email accounts, and MySQL databases. It’s appropriate for enterprises with high-traffic needs because there’s no limit on the quantity of hosting resources.

All plans include free SSL certificates

Other Services

Shared hosting is KnownHost’s most popular service, but it isn’t all the company offers. There’s also dedicated, VPS, and reseller hosting.

  • Dedicated Hosting

You can rent a KnownHost dedicated server to cater solely to your needs. That’s the most expensive option, but it’s worth it for customers who can afford it.

A dedicated server delivers the best speed and performance because you aren’t competing for computing resources with other customers. It also gives you significant control over server configurations.

  • VPS Hosting

VPS stands for virtual private servers.

A VPS is a virtual machine within a shared server. Hence, you get significant control over that server’s configurations even though you’re sharing it with other customers.

KnownHost lets customers rent virtual private servers with up to 6 TB of bandwidth and 300GB of SSD storage

  • Reseller Hosting

This type entails renting hosting resources and reselling them to other people. KnownHost allows customers to use its allocated storage space and bandwidth to handle websites for third-party customers.

It’s akin to buying hosting services wholesale and selling them individually for a possible profit.

KnownHost Pricing

An advantage of using the platform is that its shared hosting plans are pretty affordable:

Basic

$3.47 per month

1 website, 5 email addresses, 5GB of cloud storage, 2 MySQL databases, and unlimited bandwidth.

Standard

$6.47 per month

5 websites, 25 email addresses, 20GB of cloud storage, 2 MySQL databases, and unlimited bandwidth.

Professional

$9.97 per month

Unlimited websites, email addresses, cloud storage, and bandwidth.

KnownHost also offers a refund within 30 days after purchase, so you could always check the platform out and see if it’s a fit. You should note, however, that the above prices reflect a three-year commitment.

Customer Support

You can contact the KnownHost support team through email and phone 24/7. The live chat option is only reserved for sales requests. Every customer must pass technical requests through a ticketing system.

The company’s representatives operate quite swiftly. Tickets tend to get a response within five minutes, which is remarkable. The user-written KnownHost shared hosting reviews online often highlight the platform’s technical support as a prominent advantage over competitors.

There’s also a massive Knowledge Base full of helpful articles on navigating the platform. You can find solutions to commonly encountered problems and tutorials on complex configurations. KnownHost assigns every tutorial a difficulty rating, so you know how much technical skill is required to follow it.

KnownHost vs Namecheap

Namecheap is a popular KnownHost alternative. It’s an all-in-one web hosting platform offering similar features to KnownHost. But, it also differs in various ways.

The shared hosting plans on Namecheap cost pretty much the same as KnownHost’s. However, its cheapest option lets you create three websites and provides 20GB of storage, compared to 5GB on KnownHost.

You can subscribe to a shared hosting plan with unlimited websites and storage for as low as $4.88/ monthly for the first year. On the other hand, a similar package at KnownHost costs $9.97 per month from the get-go.

Domain names are available on Namecheap, just like on KnownHost. But, the former supports a larger variety of domain extensions than its rival. KnownHost offers only a few dozen extensions, while Namecheap supports over 1,500.

There’s also a domain name marketplace on Namecheap where domain sellers can connect with prospective owners and negotiate directly. KnownHost doesn’t have a similar feature.

One remarkable feature we observed on Namecheap is its content delivery network (CDN). The platform has a built-in CDN instead of depending on an external provider as KnownHost does.

KnownHost vs SiteGround

SiteGround is another well-known KnownHost alternative. Its shared hosting plans are more expensive than what KnownHost offers. Its lowest plan costs $14 per month, compared to $3.47/ monthly on KnownHost. Besides, that same plan is limited to just 10GB of storage.

You can create unlimited websites on SiteGround, but the plans supporting it cost at least $25 per month. It also lacks an unlimited storage option. Likewise, SiteGround doesn’t offer VPS hosting, which KnownHost does. In summary, KnownHost is the more cost-effective solution

Every SiteGround customer can purchase domain names for their websites. The domain extensions available on the platform are fewer than KnownHost’s.

Managed WordPress hosting is a highly sought-after feature in web hosting services, and SiteGround offers it. You can install WordPress for free and build a new site or migrate an existing one on any SiteGround plan. However, the KnownHost WordPress solution is more affordable.

One prominent feature we observed in SiteGround is the free-to-use CDN. On the flip side, getting a CDN on KnownHost will cost you extra.

Lastly, SiteGround has a more extensive hosting infrastructure than KnownHost. The company doesn’t operate its own data centers but rents hosting infrastructure from the Google Cloud network. This setup may seem like a disadvantage, but it’s not. Google Cloud has a vast network of servers around the globe, making it more reliable than KnownHost.

KnownHost Reviews - Verdict

The best thing about KnownHost is its affordability. It’s an ideal hosting solution for small or mid-sized enterprises with constrained IT budgets.

Every KnownHost user can expect their website to be up and running the vast majority of the time. The platform provides free protection against DDoS attacks, which is a commendable feature since many other platforms charge extra for it.

On the dim side, KnownHost has a limited server network compared to its peers. Hence, your website can take a relatively long time to load for visitors far away from the company’s data centers. We highlight this factor as a disadvantage.

Another drawback is that KnownHost offers too few domain extensions. You may have to buy a domain from another provider if the extension you want isn’t a common one.

In all, our KnownHost shared hosting review ranks it among the top hosting platforms for enterprises.
