What is Livedrive?

Livedrive has been around for over a decade. The company started as a simple file storage app, but demand forced it to upgrade many of its features in 2008 to later sell itself to J2 Global in 2014. This is when most of the features went through a complete rehaul, arriving as one of the best cloud storage services.

Headquartered in the United Kingdom, the company mainly focuses on cloud storage services. Many Livedrive reviews claim that while it’s not the best cloud storage program, it certainly does the job for thousands of regular users.

Some of the most interesting features include the unlimited space for backing up your files, the simplicity of the interface, and the full compliance with European privacy laws. Our Livedrive review will show you the ups and downsides of the software to help you justify the price tag. So, before you initiate your Livedrive download, we strongly suggest you check out our review below.

Main Features Of Livedrive

The Livedrive Windows and Mac apps are straightforward to work with. You should have no issues navigating through it, adjusting the settings, or organizing your data. You can get the Livedrive app on any Windows (7 and up) and macOS (10.10 and up) systems, as well as Android (5 and up) and iOS (11 and up) devices.

There are five main tabs in a top menu which include the following:

  • Dashboard: Check the status of the backup tasks and the storage you have left. You can also monitor the upload and download status.
  • Settings: The settings are divided into three modules: Backup Selection, Security Settings, and Advanced. In the Backup Selection tab, you can add individual folders and select how often or at what time the program will scan your files for changes.
  • Restore: You can restore your files from your online backup or your Briefcase storage.
  • Support: An easy way to contact customer support or find additional information to answer your questions.
  • Web: This panel connects you to the Livedrive Web portal.

Online Dashboard

Livedrive also has a web interface that is equally clean and consistent. Here, you can find tabs including:

  • Devices
  • Latest Files
  • Photo Gallery
  • Briefcase
  • Account
  • Download
  • Support

We were surprised to see the Livedrive photo gallery, which works like any other web gallery. It quickly previews files and gives you an organized way to look at folders compared to a file menu.

While most features are good, they could use some improvements. For instance, it misses an option for continuous backups, which would allow users to separate their backup sets with individual upload schedules.

The mobile app works well. It has a clean design with solid performance. You can use the hidden left menu to list options for viewing your backups, accessing the Livedrive Briefcase, setting up mobile backups, as well as sharing files. All your photos and videos can be uploaded to your online storage in the background.

Performance Of Livedrive For Mac, Windows & Mobile

We tested Livedrive from different devices and locations. The desktop app lagged a couple of times during our testing, which is something we need to address in our Livedrive review.

Initial backups take some time depending on your data set. During our Livedrive upload speed test, we uploaded a 3GB folder on a stable WiFi connection, an upload speed of 10 Mbps, and a download speed of 120 Mbps. To back up the entire folder, it took approximately an hour.

Many Livedrive reviews mention that Briefcase is one of the most popular features. When testing it, we were able to restore files from a computer using our phone with ease. The app itself is fast and easy to navigate.

In general, the file backup and restoration process were smooth. You can also choose several folders by default for your backup. Still, while it excludes some files, Livedrive supports the most common types.

Interface and Ease of Use

In agreement with many other Livedrive reviews, we found no issues using the software and thought that its simplicity is one of the top features. Even though the interface looks outdated, Livedrive works perfectly. The UI is purposely clean, and easy to navigate.

There aren’t many features in the program itself, which is why it is easy on the eyes and makes you figure it out entirely. The menu is on the left, while the features are next to it.

Customer Support

Livedrive gives users three ways to get the support they need, including:

  • Standard web support – 9 AM to 6 PM GMT
  • FAQ and knowledge base
  • Information on planned or ongoing maintenance

While the FAQ and knowledge base are always available, it would have been nice to include a live chat, phone number, and email support. Any software is prone to lags, bugs, and crashes, and a support team should always be online to help users with it.

When testing the web support about our Livedrive issues, we had to wait for 40 minutes before an agent replied to our request.

Livedrive Security

If you are concerned about security, it is important to note that all files stored by Livedrive are AES-256 bit encrypted. Considering that much personal information is backed up, you can rest assured that Livedrive does a great job at keeping them safe.

Unfortunately, this software does not offer complete end-to-end Livedrive encryption on personal plans. This means that your files are not encrypted before they leave your computer unless you sign up for a business package. Even if you use Livedrive Briefcase, you will have to manually set the files to be encrypted in the cloud.

Still, data is protected by many EU laws including the ISO/IEC 27001 standard when being stored, and there is two-factor authentication (2FA) on top of your password which makes this program even better and protects your account entirely.

Livedrive Pricing

Livedrive has three personal plans and two business plans. All of these come with a 14 day free trial period. The absence of a free plan is a significant drawback.

  • Backup ($8.99/month): Cloud storage on the go, unlimited online file storage, can be used on one PC or Mac.
  • Briefcase ($16/month): This doesn’t include backup capabilities, but lets you access, edit, and sync your files across devices and online. Many Livedrive reviews claim it’s similar to Dropbox. Comes with 2,000GB of storage.
  • Pro Suite ($25/month): Unlimited backup storage, can be used on five PCs, Macs, and unlimited tablets and smartphones, 5TB Briefcase storage, and 5,000GB of Briefcase storage.
  • Business Express ($50/month): Three users, 2,000GB of cloud storage, ability to access and edit files on the go, create backups and collaborate with your team.
  • Business Standard ($160/month): Ten users, 10,000GB of cloud storage, ability to access and edit files on the go, create backups, and collaborate with your team.

When reviewing Livedrive for business, we can see that the software offers many of the standard features of entry-level online storage options, but lacks advanced features. If you require more users or more storage on the business plans, you can upgrade them for an additional fee.

Livedrive Vs. Backblaze

As mentioned in our Livedrive review, there are some aspects where this program falls short. That’s why it’s important to see how it lives up to the most popular Livedrive alternative, Backblaze.

Both programs offer the same device support and mobile user experience. However, Backblaze supports more file types and there is no automatic Livedrive backup feature. Backblaze also wins when it comes to pricing, as its cheaper plan starts at only $6/month.

Still, many other Livedrive reviews join us in stating that Livedrive works better via mobile. Especially since there is a 30MB download limit for Backblaze mobile, and the file restoration takes a long time.

If you want to learn more about Livedrive’s competitor, our Backblaze review shows you all the details and features.

Livedrive Review – Verdict

Livedrive is a simple and straightforward tool to use. The program integrates syncing and backing up under one roof, allowing users to protect their files and have them ready, wherever they are.

We love the ability to use the program from our mobile phones and laptops/PCs. Plus, having the Briefcase option can help users retrieve or gain quick access to their cloud file storage. With AES 256-bit Livedrive encryption and full compliance with EU laws, the tool gives you additional peace of mind. Users also love the photo preview and unlimited storage sync space

However, the lack of continuous backups is a downside, as well as the price. When looking at the plans in more detail, there is space for a cheaper option.

I've been fascinated by technology my whole life. From the first Tetris game all the way to Falcon Heavy. So writing for Techjury is like a dream come true, combining both my passions - writing and technology. In my free time (which is pretty scarce, thanks to both my sons,) I enjoy traveling and exploring new places. Always with a few chargers and a couple of gadgets in the backpack.
