We all know the drill:
Use different passwords for different online accounts. Keep changing them frequently. Create unique ones. Never write down your password or share it with others.
Nowadays the average internet user has close to a hundred accounts, so sticking to all those tips seems like a full-time job. What you really need is a password vault software.
And why not start with one of the best? Our Password Boss review is here to show you how to change your life.
Password Boss Features
Password Boss can do a lot to keep your passwords and other sensitive information safe.
Password Boss takes away the hassle of remembering your login IDs and passwords. It securely manages the credentials for all the sites you access and logs you in quickly when you ask it to do so.
You can enter all your credit and debit card details in the Password Boss app. It saves you time and effort in filling up payment details every time you shop. Worry not – all your sensitive information will be secured.
Password Boss allows you to share items or folders with others safely. You can create different recipients, manage the rights given to them, add expiry dates for these rights, etc. The shared items remain encrypted, and you retain ownership over them. This feature is probably more useful in a business environment, but it did come in handy for personal purposes too when we tested it for this Password Boss Premium review.
It is always advised to have different strong passwords for different accounts, but generating a new one every time is easier said than done. The Password Boss generator automatically shows up when you have to set a new password. You can then quickly use it to create one of any length and including or excluding letters, numbers, capitals, and symbols. You can also use it to change existing passwords.
All you have to do is turn on the feature and choose a data center location. The benefit of a cloud-based approach is that all your information is retained even if you misplace your device. Plus, the data can be synced across all your devices in no time. We tested Password Boss Premium, and the data across three devices synced really fast.
Dark Web Scanner
The dark web is the encrypted part of the World Wide Web that is not indexed by conventional search engines. The lack of oversight makes it easy for cyber thieves to sell and buy critical private information.
Password Boss provides a dark web scanner, a useful tool that scans this hidden part of the Web and informs you if any of your information is out there. If it is, you can take remedial steps by making changes to your passwords and other leaked personal data.
In the Password Boss app, the dark web scanner is a part of an even more comprehensive diagnostic feature. The security dashboard conducts a quick password assessment exercise and assigns you a score based on your overall online security. This score takes into account the strength of your passwords and other factors like whether they are too old, compromised, or available on the dark web.
You can set permissions for another user to access your account in case of an emergency. For instance, there might be a folder with your financial information, which you don’t want anyone else to access normally. However, in your absence, say, in case of an accident, a close relative or friend may need to retrieve the data to help you out. Emergency access proves really useful in such cases.
Password Boss allows you to designate multiple people for emergency access and assign different access rights to them. You can also set a waiting period for each person so that access is possible only after it expires.
Password Boss Mobile Apps
Password Boss apps can be downloaded for Windows and macOS, as well as iOS and Android. The mobile applications are identical in appearance and functionality to the desktop versions. There are a few platform-specific features, such as a four-digit PIN for secure access and fingerprint authentication. If you have enabled cloud backup on your desktop, all your information will get synced smoothly between your personal computer and smartphone.
When choosing a password manager, the most important bit to know is how it keeps your data safe. For our Password Boss review, we have paid special attention to the safety measures the app employs. It uses a combination of AES-256 and PBKDF2 for encryption, which is the industry standard and stops cyber-attacks immediately.
To access your information, you have to set a master password, for which Password Boss then creates a unique key. Both are stored using a zero-knowledge system, which means that at no point does the app know what your master password is. The issue is that if you forget it, Password Boss cannot help you in retrieving passwords and other information. Your account has to be reset.
The app also applies end-to-end encryption on all the data moving between your devices and the software. No one in the middle can access your data. An additional layer of security comes from certificate pinning, which keeps anyone from impersonating Password Boss to access your private data.
For an activity that requires additional online security, such as banking transactions, you have the option of using the in-app secure web browser. It’s a secure DNS service to prevent a DNS poisoning attack. Cookies and temp files are deleted on exit, and third-party add-ons are not allowed.
On top of all this, you can also enable 2-factor authentication (2FA) on a business or family account. This means that even if someone knows the master password, there’s another level of authentication required for the person to gain access to the account.
Finally, there’s secure cloud storage where an encrypted database of all your information shared with Password Boss is stored for easy syncing across devices.
You don’t even need to worry if your device is lost. You can enable the remote delete function in the app on another device. All your information will be gone and no one could retrieve it.
We can say with confidence that the app does a very good job of keeping all your sensitive information safe.
Note that many of these security features are offered only in Password Boss Premium and above.
Ease of Use and Interface
Even if you have never used a password manager before it, it’ll take you just a few minutes to figure out how most features work. You get a great tutorial right at the beginning, but even without it none of the user-interface elements feel busy or intimidating. One of the highlights is the security panel that summarizes information related to your account and warns you of potential vulnerabilities. We had no issues, while we were writing this Password Boss Premium review.
The Password Boss extensions for browsers work smoothly and are very intuitive to handle.
Customer support is one area where the service could pick up a few tips from its competitors. The only support channel available is email. We shared a query through the form available on the Contact Us page and received a helpful and to-the-point reply within a few hours. This was despite submitting the query when it was well past office hours in the US, where Password Boss is headquartered.
10 points from our Password Boss review for the quick, professional response, but the absence of phone or even live chat options means immediate help is not available if you need it.
It is a good thing then that the website has a help center with a lot of resources, including videos, detailed articles, and a quick start guide. The search function works very well, and we could easily find every bit of information we looked for.
Password Boss Plans and Pricing
Password Boss has three subscription plans in the Personal category and two in the Business category. One of the Personal plans offers lifetime free use, including 30 days of Password Boss Premium features.

- Premium – $2.50/user/month
- Families – $4.00/month for 5 users
For Business (at least 5 users), you’ll have to call and request a personalized quote.
All paid plans come with a 30-day money-back guarantee.
Verdict – Is Password Boss Worth It?
Password Boss is a very competent multi-platform password manager, with robust security features and a user-friendly design. It even offers a few extras like a dark web scanner and emergency recovery. Overall, it does everything it promises.
At the same time, there are other password management tools that offer stronger administrator control features and more detailed analytics. Some enterprise users may prefer these extra features so that they can exercise greater control over the team members’ accounts. However, these options are also more expensive. In fact, Password Boss is among the most affordable managers, given all its features.
The only notable downside with Password Boss is the lack of customer support channels. However, the help center proved useful enough and gave us all the information needed for this Password Boss review.
We’d recommend this solution with both hands.
