Best for: Recovering lost files
What Is Recoverit
Recoverit data recovery tool was developed by Wondershare and has been around in some form since 2003. It finds thousands of file types on internal and removable media devices, restores them, and helps with backups.
Recoverit has Mac and Windows versions. Wondershare phone recovery can recognize a mobile device’s basic internal storage system via USB.
We look at features, ease of use, and pricing in this Recoverit review.
The data recovery Wondershare provides covers almost every file type and device.
Standard Wondershare File Recovery
The core file recovery feature scans your chosen drives and folders for files. It supports virtually every file type, including obscure system ones. If your source is not corrupted, it will also show files that haven’t been lost or deleted. So, you can back everything up to another location easily.
You can restore recovered files to any location on your computer. We suggest you move everything from a failing drive to a more stable location, so you don’t have to repeat the process.
You will find all files listed in the main file manager window and can be sorted by name, size, file type, size, and date.
Wondershare Data Recovery: Crashed Computers
Sometimes hard drives and solid-state drives fail completely, or the operating system becomes corrupt and won’t boot. Recoverit can salvage data in both scenarios. You can access a failed drive on a bootable computer in the same way as any other device. The software attempts to scan for all the files that have not been permanently damaged or wiped.
If the system won't load, you will need to create a boot disk or bootable USB drive. You will need a secondary computer or laptop. So, it’s wise to prepare for data loss when your system is still healthy.
The wizard will walk you through making a bootable drive. It only takes a few minutes.
Once armed for recovery, insert the disc or USB stick into the failing computer and follow your BIOS instructions to boot from the drive. This is a native feature of every computer that switches from booting the operating system to what’s on the drive instead.
Here, it’s a recovery tool that scans the damaged system for files and lets you transfer them to a stable location. This can be a secondary storage device or hard disk drive that doesn’t contain the damaged operating system.
Once everything is recovered, install a fresh copy of Windows on the working drive. Recoverit cannot do it itself.
External devices are just as easy to scan for files as internal hard drives. If your computer can normally locate the device and recognize its storage, so can Recoverit. This includes:
- Cameras and Video Cameras
- CDs and DVDs
- SD Cards and other memory cards
- External USB hard drives
- USB flash drives/ pen drives/ dongles etc
- Mobile devices that connect via USB
- Other electronic devices
Sometimes, you can remove memory cards from external devices and insert them directly into your PC or laptop for the same effect. This helps if the device itself is not recognized when connected by USB or another method – particularly video cameras and phones.
Wondershare data recovery has an Android option, but it only recognizes USB storage. You cannot effectively recover or backup phone data like text messages or your phone book.
Wondershare data recovery iPhone tools are also available, but that too only finds files like photos and music, not deeper system files that can be easily restored to an iOS account.
It’s more efficient to use other methods to regularly backup your smartphone data and use Recoverit for standard files in a freak emergency.
Lost your emails or just want to back them up? Recoverit can access Microsoft Outlook and OFT email systems. Supported files include:
In these formats, you can easily restore your emails manually or even merge them with other accounts. Sometimes you might just archive them for later reference.
Other Supported File Types
Recoverit supports over 1,000 different computer and device files. These include:
- Photos (JPEG, JPG, PNG, etc.)
- Video (AVI, FLA, MP4, etc.)
- Audio (AAC, AIFF, MP3, etc.)
- Office Files (Word, Excel, PPT, PDF, etc)
- Other Documents (TXT, EPUB, JIS, etc.)
- Archives (7Z, WAR, ZIP, exe, etc.)
- Databases (BQY, BTR, CAP, etc.)
As well as finding lost, deleted, and corrupted files, Recoverit makes it easy to back up drives and folders to other destinations. This includes the files you thought were gone.
This feature could be significantly improved if it allowed scheduled backups and incremental backups, but its primary purpose is file recovery, so we see it as a bonus, not a flaw.
Recycle Bin Recovery
Many people think that once a file has been sent to the recycle bin, and it has been cleared, it’s gone for good. In truth, it still exists on the hard drive if that sector hasn’t begun overwriting with new files.
Wondershare data recovery can get these back. Simply click the Recycle Bin icon on the main Recoverit window. There are two options: All-Around Scan and Deep Scan. The latter performs a longer and more thorough process.
The rest of the recovery process is the same as other modes.
As the name suggests, the advanced video recovery icon is tailored specifically for lost video files. Choose this option and then select the drives or folders where the lost videos were stored. MP4, MOV and AVI, are pre-checked because these are more popular and can speed up the process. But if you know your video was a different format, don’t forget to check that instead. Or just search for everything.
Recoverit data recovery uses a two-step process. First, it finds all lost videos and fragments. Once complete, it attempts to match fragments together to make corrupted video files whole.
After both stages, you can preview a few seconds of the video within the software to check whether it’s what you’re looking for.
Wondershare Video Repair
Besides recovery, you can use the video repair tool on files that aren’t deleted but have become corrupted. This may occur because of a disk error, interrupted cut/paste, or a bad video encoder. Whatever the reason, Recoverit attempts to restore it to its previous glory.
If we’re honest, Wondershare video repair results are inconsistent, but few software programs offer such a tool. So, it’s worth a shot.
It functions by taking the portion of the video that exists, analyzes its format and specs, and then performs a scan to find similarly lost fragments. It can then piece them back together. You can preview videos within the software so you can see how well the repair went.
Advanced repair is the last resort. This mode requires you to load a different video that is the same format and specs as the damaged one and shot using the same device. This gives Recoverit a better idea of what to look for and how to repair it.
Again, results are spotty but it’s better than nothing. If you manage to repair the video, you can save it to any valid location.
Ease of Use and Interface
Wondershare data recovery has no learning curve. As soon as you fire up Recoverit, it lets you know exactly what hard disk drives and connected storage devices are available.
This includes everything from a pen drive and SD card, to a connected camera or mobile phone. If you can plug it into your computer and it has a readable storage format, the data can be accessed.
All it takes is to check the box of each drive or device you want to search. Alternatively, you can browse to a single folder for a more direct approach.
Other options on the main window include recovery from a crashed computer and the mentioned video repair tools.
Once you hit start after checking an option, Wondershare recovery springs into action and begins scanning in a surprisingly fast manner. Ultimately, the time it takes depends on how much information is stored and the power of your computer. But it’s fast compared to similar software.
Impact on system performance
You won’t have to worry about it hogging resources either. It used less memory than Chrome and Word on our test system and about 10% of the CPU. You can easily perform basic tasks with the program running in the background.
You’ll see the scan progress displayed at the top in a loading bar, listing the number of files found and how many sectors have been read.
Below is a familiar folder and file system, showing the size, type, and date modified. You can sort items based on these parameters, while a search bar is particularly helpful if you have too many files to sift through. The main window fills as you go, so you can browse found files before the process is finished.
If you’ve discovered your file before scanning is complete, you can pause and recover it right away. If there’s more still to find, you can then resume for a Wondershare data recovery full scan.
We like the large preview window on the right which gives you a bit more insight into each found file. It includes name, size, and the usual info, but also a thumbnail showing text, an image, or some seconds from a video.
If you don’t know exactly what you’re looking for or corrupted and lost files have been given a garbled filename, you’ll find this useful,
Pressing recover on a single file or several checked files allows you to restore them to the original location or a new one, which is perhaps more stable.
Ease of use
The entire program is very easy to use. The only other important feature is a direct link to customer support in the top right corner.
Recoverit for Mac is similarly easy to use and has all the same features as the Windows version.
As noted, Wondershare iPhone recovery is not that advanced. It can only find files like photos and videos that would be recognized if connected to as normal. It cannot clone or restore phone data and handle obscure things like contacts or call logs.
The same goes for Wondershare data recovery for Android. Phones simply show up as regular external storage devices.
The Wondershare data recovery price follows a typical model whereby it’s more cost-effective to pay for a yearly or lifetime license than a monthly one. That’s not to say the lifetime license is astronomical, but it would be nice to have a reasonable monthly plan for those on a budget.
We are knocking off half a star for giving Windows users cheaper plans.
- Monthly License – $79.99
- Yearly License – $99.99
- Lifetime License – $159.99
Mac OS X
- Monthly License – $109.99
- Yearly License – $139.99
- Lifetime License – $169.99
The Recoverit free version is not a viable solution on its own. It lets you scan your computer and external devices and will tell you what files are recoverable. You can’t recover them, however, until you pay for a license.
If you don’t get the results you desire, there’s a 7-day, no-questions-asked money-back guarantee.
Recoverit reviews generally praise Wondershare’s customer service response. There’s a direct link within the software and it’s easily accessible from the official website.
The support staff is available 24/7 Monday to Friday, via email, live web chat, and phone (international rates may apply).
You can also check the guides on the site - they will walk you through each feature and how to use it.
Recoverit Review – Verdict
We found Recoverit to be an intuitive tool that’s most suitable for Windows and Mac computers. Phones are an afterthought, though.
Scanning is fast and doesn’t slow down your system, while every feature can be carried out with a few clicks. The large file previews are useful when you’re not sure you’ve found the correct item.
The video recovery and repair features are ambitious and do not deliver the best results, but it’s a feature that can only improve with future releases.
The only things holding it back from a top score are promoting a Recoverit free data recovery option that doesn’t really do anything. And, having prices so close together that paying monthly isn’t worthwhile.
Does Wondershare work and is Wondershare legit? Yes, but it’s not without its flaws. Give it a try and see what you think!
Is Recoverit any good?
Wondershare legit works for data recovery, yes. The company has been around since 2003 and amassed millions of individual and business users. While testing for our Recoverit review, we recovered several recently deleted files from an external hard drive and from the Windows recycle bin.
Compared to similar software, it is exceptionally easy to use.
Is Recoverit really free?
Yes, and no. While you can download the program for free and never have to pay for a plan, its functionality is almost useless without a license.
You can only scan for files that might be lost. Wondershare data recovery has no free option.
Is Wondershare Recoverit safe?
It has no hidden toolbars, neither it installs addons. Paying customers are not bombarded with spam. Wondershare has been developing software for many years and Recoverit reviews across the web are mostly positive.
How much does Recoverit cost?
Unfortunately, there is no Recoverit free data recovery option. To use the software properly, you will need to pay at least $79.99 for a monthly WIndows license.
