The low capital requirement is what makes dropshipping attractive. On top of that, scalability, cross-border market penetration, and access to wide product variety are other notable advantages.
What’s in it for the supplier?
As a dropshipper, you can leverage motivated resellers to distribute your products. Using an army of third-party merchants can increase your sales without ramping up your marketing efforts.
The business model can create a win-win situation for retailers and suppliers.
But it’s not for everybody.
Dropshipping is notorious for its slim margins. Moreover, it can make order processing and customer service a bit complicated.
If you take the dropshipping route, you’ll need a reliable intermediary to help streamline everything.
What Is Spocket?
Spocket is a dropshipping marketplace used by 60,000+ entrepreneurs. It aims to eliminate losing sales due to out-of-stock items and needing to launch huge discounts just to get rid of overstocked ones.
To do this, Spocket curates products from manufacturers, wholesalers, and retailers from all over the world. This way, third-party merchants can easily find and resell them.
Here’s a summary of Spocket’s order fulfillment process:
- You choose the items you want to push into your online store.
- Your customer places an order and makes a payment.
- The order appears on the My Orders tab on your Spocket account dashboard.
- You complete the transaction by paying for it upfront with your card.
- The supplier fulfills the order and ships it to your customer.
- You get an email notification with the order’s tracking number to keep tabs on the shipment.
Spocket isn’t doing something unique. Zoho Inventory, for example, can approach suppliers to fulfill your orders when you’re out of stock. However, dropshipping is only an afterthought to this inventory management software. Conversely, Spocket lives and breathes it.
In terms of popularity, most of the user-written Spocket reviews online are 5-star.
Apple enthusiasts don’t seem to be too fond of it, though. Many of the App Store’s 20 Spocket reviews are 1-star, garnering the underwhelming rating of 2.3 stars.
What’s happening? What does the rest of the world see in Spocket that some iOS and iPadOS users don’t?
There’s only one way to find out.
Let’s take a deep dive into what Spocket is all about.
Spocket is a web-based app, which means you only need a browser like Chrome or Firefox to manage your business. Without having to download and run a separate desktop app, you can access your account on any internet-connected computer.
Moreover, Spocket now has apps for iOS, iPadOS, and Android. If you’re always on the go, you’ll be able to import new products and complete orders on your mobile device.
However, at the time of writing this Spocket dropshipping review, the Android app was nowhere to be found on Google Play.
Spocket has a directory of 2,000 suppliers. Its network is up to two times bigger than Wholesale Central’s, but is 300% smaller than SaleHoo’s.
The company doesn’t collect commissions on supplier revenues or charge setup fees.
What Spocket demands from suppliers is to set the listing price of their items at least 25% lower than standard. This way, the retailers on the platform have room to apply decent markups on what they resell.
Furthermore, Spocket is open to suppliers from anywhere in the world. Having said that, Spocket gives priority to UK dropshipping suppliers and North American, Australian, and European businesses. That’s why 80% of its suppliers reside in either the United States or Europe.
Fortunately, you can connect Spocket with Alibaba, which is home to more than 150,000 wholesale suppliers in China. Otherwise, I would have recommended EPROLO to source Chinese products and sell them in western markets.
Spocket categorizes the products on its platform as either premium or unique.
Premium products come from the leading suppliers on Spocket. These items are best sellers and are the most heavily discounted, selling for up to 60% less.
On the other hand, unique products are all the items that aren’t classified as premium. Basically, there’s nothing unique about them except for not making the curated list of premium products.
Spocket has 18 product categories. Some types of merchandise may not fall under any of them. But what’s clear is that the company explicitly bans:
- Goods with unproven health claims.
- Pieces of equipment designed for using or making drugs.
- Legal substances that can have similar effects to illegal ones.
Generally, the maximum number of Spocket products you can sell at a given time is 10,000. But if you manage to generate 500 orders, you may request to raise that cap at no extra cost.
However, you don’t have to hit this sales goal within a specific period. You can increase your product limit by checking out 500 orders in five hours or five months.
Spocket’s catalog can feature more than a million products – the vast majority being original merchandise from the US and Europe. This figure is impressive considering the relatively small number of suppliers on the platform.
Regarding product searchability, you should be able to navigate Spocket’s catalog without issues.
You can filter what’s on the screen by keyword, price, shipping origins and destinations, and more. In a few clicks, you can view just the top suppliers, best sellers, and premium products.
Spocket doesn’t dictate the shipping time of any item. The suppliers do.
There are some factors that can negatively impact a product’s estimated time of arrival. However, the company requires suppliers to process orders within the timeframe they’ve specified during the application process. Violators risk getting removed from the platform.
This is the list of products you want to push into your store. Spocket doesn’t let you import more than one item at a time. The company wants you to review and be aware of all important details like shipping information and return policy first.
Importing items from Spocket suppliers into your account can be time-consuming. However you can publish your chosen products in bulk.
In addition, you can import items from some third-party platforms like AliExpress into Spocket.
Imported Product Customization
On Spocket, you can optimize your product details to make them more search-friendly. You can insert keywords in the title and description, add or remove tags, and include product types for SEO purposes.
If you link Spocket to Shopify, you can automatically update your shop’s collections.
On Spocket, the suppliers set the shipping fees.
However, they can’t set rates higher than those on their own retail sites. Spocket permits them to impose greater fees only when they adjust their listing prices accordingly. As long as they meet the minimum net discount of 25% for dropshipping entrepreneurs, they’re good.
When you export items from Spocket into Shopify, you need to set up the shipping costs separately. This part can be tricky because two shipping fees apply: domestic and international.
To factor in these costs in a way that doesn’t diminish your margins, Spocket recommends three options:
- Adding them to the base price so you can offer free shipping.
- Offering a flat rate based on the average or highest shipping fee you encounter.
- Customizing shipping rates per product group.
Return and Refunds Policies
There are three return policies on Spocket: no returns, 15-day returns, and 30-day returns.
The last two are money-back guarantees – your customers can use them to get a refund. The caveat is that they need to shoulder the extra shipping cost.
Typically, refunds arrive within three to five business days.
In case of defective or wrong merchandise, Spocket will honor refund requests provided that the customer submits photos as proof.
Not only can you connect the Spocket app to Shopify, you can also integrate it with the following third-party platforms:
- KMO Shops
- AliExpress (via the AliScraper Chrome extension)
A list of 11 native integrations is short. But the company is planning to expand its software’s compatibility. So if you run your store on Zyro, a Spocket integration for this website builder may be on the horizon.
Also, this app may natively support personal brand channels sooner rather than later.
If you run multiple digital storefronts on different ecommerce platforms, you’ll have to buy several subscriptions.
The company limits one Spocket integration per account. If you need to use more third-party apps, you’ll have to pay more.
Spocket only works with suppliers that hold inventory of their products.
The software updates the inventory of all products in real-time. This way, you can quickly see which items are about to run out of supply and immediately replace out-of-stock ones.
If a supplier discontinues a listing, Spocket will automatically delete it.
This feature helps you list only available items and avoid losing revenue opportunities.
Normally, you can pay the supplier for only one item you sell at a time. But if you sign up for the Unicorn plan, you’ll be able to complete multiple orders simultaneously.
If you handle many transactions, checking out orders in bulk will dramatically speed up your sales process.
Product and Supplier Sourcing
Another Unicorn-exclusive feature, this one entitles you to ask for suppliers or products that are not yet on Spocket.
If you decide to use it, Spocket will court relevant UK dropshipping suppliers or wholesalers operating in your target markets.
Some suppliers allow you to create branded invoices, which is a great way to promote your business.
Aside from placing your logo, you can also include your email address, phone number, and a personalized note.
Dedicated Success Manager Support
The company’s customer service options are outside the scope of this Spocket dropshipping review.
But what I can say is that they’re free and available to everyone.
However, if you like some VIP treatment, you can sign up for an annual subscription or generate a certain number of orders. Either can get you a dedicated success manager.
Direct Supplier Messaging
For $5.99 a month, you’ll be able to chat with suppliers and get updates on your orders.
Not all suppliers on Spocket choose to interact with merchants directly. But those who do will respond to your message within 24 to 48 hours.
The company offers five plans – one free and four premium. Having said that, it would be a stretch to say that Spocket uses a freemium pricing model.
Its free plan does just one thing: provide access to the catalog. It’s helpful for viewing the items you can resell and familiarizing yourself with the app’s interface.
To get a taste of Spocket, you’ll have to buy a premium subscription.
Here are your options:
Signing up for a premium subscription outright can be risky since Spocket plans are non-refundable. To avoid committing prematurely, strongly consider the company’s 14-day trial for monthly subscriptions.
This option is free and requires no credit card. However, you’ll have to use your PayPal to test Spocket at no cost for two weeks. If you choose to save your credit card details on file instead, you’ll pay a non-refundable one-time $0.99 fee.
Either way, you need to provide billing information so that Spocket can charge you when your trial ends.
All premium Spocket plans auto-renew.
The company will continue billing you even if you unlink your store from the app. Downgrading to the free plan or canceling your account altogether are the only ways to keep your subscription from renewing.
Spocket vs Oberlo
Oberlo is a dropshipping automation app owned by Shopify. Naturally, it’s one of Spocket’s biggest rivals.
Let’s see how they stack up against each other in five areas.
Unlike Spocket, Oberlo is just a browser-based app. Interestingly, I did find a mobile app named Oberlo Dropshipping on Google Play, but it’s not from Shopify.
As far as versatility is concerned, Oberlo is integratable with Shopify only. So if you use other ecommerce platforms, Spocket is the obvious choice.
Oberlo isn’t the marketplace Spocket is. It does one thing and one thing only: push products listed on AliExpress into your Shopify store.
Due to its one-dimensionality, Oberlo can’t match Spocket’s supplier sourcing capability. Apart from its own network, Spocket also has native integrations for Alibaba and AliExpress, amongst others.
The Oberlo and Spocket dropshipping apps can help you generate unlimited orders, complete bulk transactions, and track shipments. However, the former has a wider set of features.
On top of the basics, Oberlo can solve CAPTCHA tests and permit the creation of multiple staff accounts.
Its new variant mapping functionality can come in handy when merging redundant listings. Pulling out-of-stock products and replacing relatively expensive items with cheaper versions are its other use cases.
In its own right, Spocket can do real-time inventory updates. However its only real feature is branded invoicing.
Ease of Use
Thanks to the rollout of variant mapping, Oberlo is the more user-friendly option. However, its interface is practically the same as Spocket’s.
Both apps support multiple languages. However, Spocket is kinder to more groups of non-native-English speakers. Oberlo’s default content is translatable to five languages, while Spocket offers 11 options.
Spocket has more available packages (5 vs. 2). However, the Spocket free plan isn’t as meaningful as its Oberlo equivalent.
With a product limit of 500, you can actually begin selling on Oberlo without buying its monthly premium package.
What’s good about Spocket’s pricing strategy is that it’s cheaper and more flexible. Its price starts at $24.99, which is $5 less than what Oberlo charges.
Nonetheless, the latter can offer more value for your money. You can sell more items with its free plan than you can with Spocket’s two bottom-tier premium plans.
In conclusion, the Oberlo vs Spocket battle is a close one.
Oberlo is a no-brainer if you want to resell AliExpress products on Shopify. But if you want to use more platforms and access US and Europe-based suppliers, Spocket is the logical choice.
Spocket Review – Verdict
Admittedly, Spocket came as a letdown on some levels. Its Android app is missing, and its basic plan does nothing but provide a free catalog tour. Moreover, its app’s trial, whether it be free or paid, requires payment information.
Even Spocket’s diverse plans (one of its greatest strengths) are a bit restrictive. If you want to display more than 275 items at a time, you’ll have to upgrade to a relatively expensive plan.
I’m not alone in thinking that the subscription cost may become harder to justify as you sell more products.
However, Spocket is promising because it requires all of its suppliers to give a minimum net discount of 25%. Also, its current integrations enable you to sell on different ecommerce platforms and source suppliers outside of its network.
So, would I recommend Spocket to aspiring dropshipping merchants?
Yes, I would.
Is Spocket worth it?
Only you could answer that question, but I guarantee that the platform is worth your consideration. It holds true, especially when you want to resell original American and European products on ecommerce platforms not named Shopify.
How does shipping work with Spocket?
Suppliers handle all things shipping. They specify the estimated delivery time, set the rate, produce the tracking information, and take care of returns.
As a dropshipping retailer on Spocket, you only need to decide what shipping policy to pursue.
Is Spocket paid?
Yes, it is.
On paper, the company offers a freemium service. But the only thing you can do with the Spocket free plan is explore its catalog.
To start reselling products from dropshipping suppliers, you have to sign up for its trial or buy a premium subscription.
How does Spocket make money?
Spocket keeps the lights on by collecting subscription fees from dropshipping entrepreneurs. In addition, the company sells dropshipping business courses.
At the moment, it charges suppliers no setup fees and commissions.
