SurfEasy VPN Review
Updated · Aug 03, 2022
Best for: Basic web anonymity.
What Is SurfEasy?
Simply put, SurfEasy is a virtual private network (VPN) that encrypts users’ online activity.
Athir Nuaimi, Steve Kelly, and Chris Houston founded the company in 2011.
The company has passed through two acquisitions throughout the years. To begin with, search engine Opera Software bought it in 2015. Two years later, NortonLifeLock Inc (formerly Symantec) acquired it. The American cybersecurity giant owns it to date.
Currently, SurfEasy has over 2,000 servers spread in 31 countries.
I bet if you’ve read other SurfEasy VPN reviews, you’re wondering if it’ll work for you.
Come along with me as we dissect its functionalities one by one.
Ready? Let's get it started!
SurfEasy VPN Features
Is SurfEasy a good VPN? Before deciding, we need to take a look at the service’s core features:
Boy! Wouldn’t it be nice to surf the net and not worry if advertisers are prying around?
SurfEasy has an algorithm that blocks third-party cookies that marketers use to snoop at your actions online.
It has a tracker blocker that shows you the total number of tracking attempts it has blocked.
If further breaks that figure down to display the number of times it has thwarted snooping efforts during:
- The day
- The last one week
- The last one month
WiFi hotspot protection
Regular use of public WiFi multiplies your vulnerability to cyber attacks. That’s because the hotspots are unsecured, making it easy for hackers to access your data.
When in such networks, the VPN by SurfEasy protects your devices against spies, snoopers, or malicious attacks. It automatically detects unsafe spots and proceeds to shield your device.
Is SurfEasy safe? This is an important question for every prospective user.
You can rest assured since the company uses AES encryption. To be more specific, 256-bit AES encryption.
This technology utilizes a single secret key to cipher (convert into random characters that hackers can’t understand) and deciphers data.
This mode of securing data is so water-tight that it has the approval of the National Security Agency (NSA).
In the history of encryption standards, this one is the strongest and most dependable.
SurfEasy claims to have a zero log policy.
But does it really?
In essence, such a policy means that a virtual private network should never store any information that can personally identify a user.
That includes IP addresses, chat histories, emails, SMS, etc.
So, does this VPN keep its word?
For this SurfEasy VPN review, I had to conduct in-depth research on the matter.
In the document, SurfEasy lists the data types that it collects. Some of it includes:
- Installer identifiers
- IP addresses
- Device types
- License identifiers
- Operating systems and their versions
That’s not all:
It abides by the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) data retention laws. The body ensures that websites or VPNs log user data.
SurfEasy VPN Advanced Features
Apart from regular functions, does SurfEasy have anything additional to offer?
Read on to find out.
One-click IP masking
Have you ever wondered how hackers and all those unsavory characters know what you’re doing on the internet?
They’re able to do that using your IP address.
This VPN by SurfEasy hides your real IP and issues you with another one. Enabling it takes just one click.
Unlimited simultaneous connections
Most households have more than one internet-connected device.
This is why SurfEasy’s option for simultaneous connections on multiple devices is a big plus.
With it, you can connect up to five gadgets at a go.
However, note that you can only make one connection on your SurfEasy VPN mobile subscription.
If you’re a streamer or “torrentor,” VPN bandwidth is a vital aspect to consider. If it’s limited, it will affect how much you can stream or torrent per month.
So, it’s a fantastic thing that SurfEasy offers unlimited bandwidth.
SurfEasy VPN Browser extensions work on both Chrome and Opera. They’re easy to install and use.
Furthermore, they reside in the browser as opposed to taking up space on your machine.
Launch at start
You can set SurfEasy to start once you switch on your device automatically by tweaking its settings.
The process isn’t a complicated one.
Just check the “Launch at Start” box in the dropdown options.
SurfEasy VPN Servers and Locations
Does the number of servers a VPN offers really matter, and why?
Yes, that number is crucial when it comes to speeds.
The more they are, the greater the speeds since there’s no congestion.
SurfEasy VPN servers are over 2,000. They are located in 31 countries across Africa, Europe, Asia, and the Americas.
SurfEasy VPN Speed
SurfEasy provides decent speeds, especially for same-country VPN servers.
But, servers outside your region might be slower.
However, it’s not entirely useless in this aspect.
This is what I mean:
Although your speed might decline, it’s nothing that will bring your connection to a complete standstill. Therefore, they’re reliable.
SurfEasy VPN Privacy and Jurisdiction
SurfEasy’s head office is in Canada, a member of the Five Eyes, Nine Eyes, and Fourteen Eyes.
Why does that even matter?
I’ll tell you all about it.
Well, the alliances can ask the SurfEasy VPN for desktop or mobile to:
- Disclose your information
- Insert malware in your device
Note that member countries do not only monitor users within their jurisdiction. They also surveil individuals that communicate with them even if they’re away from the confines of the “Eyes.”
Another thing to note is that its parent company LifeLock Inc is US-based. That makes it subject to United States rules.
SurfEasy VPN Security and Protocols
The SurfEasy VPN security is ensured by 256-bit AES encryption, which is as safe as they come.
Another one of its security features is its OpenVPN protocol for Windows, Mac, and Android. The protocol utilizes open-source security, such as peer authentication and preshared keys, which keep your communication safe.
iOS gadgets get the IPSec protocol.
SurfEasy VPN Leak Test Results
SurfEasy doesn’t leak DNS WebRTC and IPv6. It handles leak protection at a server level, which eliminates any leakages.
SurfEasy VPN and Streaming Services
This VPN unlocks BBC iPlayer quite well.
When it comes to SurfEasy and Netflix, this is a bit of trial and error.
The same applies to the following:
How Good Is SurfEasy VPN for Torrenting?
Can SurfEasy torrent?
Yes, it can.
One of the reasons it’s so great for P2P sharing and streaming is that it doesn’t have data limits.
It also conceals your details, making it impossible for your Internet Service Provider (ISP) to know what you’re up to. Most will kick you out of their service for sharing movies or music with others.
Can SurfEasy VPN Bypass Geoblocks?
SurfEasy doesn’t work everywhere due to IP and government restrictions, a.k.a geo-blocking. In addition, it’s not an obfuscated VPN that could otherwise help conceal its usage.
So, which countries are under the VPN usage radar?
China cracks down on VPN usage. It uses Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) to inspect internet connections thoroughly.
Since SurfEasy uses OpenVPN, it’s one of the easiest to spot.
It partially works in Russia and Indonesia.
Here’s a list of more nations with strict censorship on the SurfEasy VPN app usage:
- Saudi Arabia
Ease of Use
Is this virtual private network as easy to use as other SurfEasy VPN reviews say?
If you’re new to VPN, this one will serve you well because it doesn't require much input. That means no coding or complicated configurations.
My SurfEasy set-up took less than three minutes.
That’s not all:
Its interface is user-friendly and uncluttered, making it easy for you to find your way around.
Additionally, its Settings function is at the top-right corner of your screen for easy reach.
The “On/Off” button comes right after and in giant letters; hence hard to miss. Also, it’s hassle-free to use because it has a slider.
Functions like Usage and Upgrade follow next in a neat line.
The center shows things like where your SurfEasy VPN server is, whether your connection is secure, and your public IP address.
Bottom line, you won’t get lost trying to find features or figure out how they work with this solution.
The SurfEasy customer service department is available seven days a week. However, they only work from 9 AM to 5 PM EST. Note that they only attend to English queries.
You can find them on:
- Live chat
I tested client support to give you an objective SurfEasy review. I spoke to three different representatives, and their service was nothing short of outstanding.
They were friendly, approachable, responsive, and patient. In addition, I got detailed answers to all my questions.
SurfEasy VPN Price
There’s no trial or free SurfEasy VPN version. The good news, however, is that it offers a 14-day money-back guarantee.
Note that to cancel within 14 days, you must email support. Your mail needs to include your PIN and a reason for wanting to revoke your subscription.
And here is SurfEasy pricing:
- $5.99 per month
- $29.88 per year
Money-conscious users would be glad to know that the SurfEasy cost stacks up well against the competition.
SurfEasy VPN Review - Verdict
SurfEasy reviews would be very biased if they don’t point both the strengths and weaknesses of this VPN solution. So here’s what we liked and didn’t like about the service.
First things first, there’s no denying that SurfEasy has minimal features. It lacks a killswitch, split tunneling, stealth, and double VPN, which all ensure a safer connection.
It also has US and Canada ties, members of the Five, Nine, and Fourteen Eyes. That means it can disclose your data if the alliances mandate it to.
Also, its zero-log policy is a bone of contention since it stores some data. As much as it claims not to keep any information, considering that it’s GDPR compliant (which requires data storage) makes the entire thing baffling.
But if you’re not breaking any laws (terrorism, child pornography, human traffic, etc.), you need not worry about this.
Customer service for the SurfEasy VPN app is limited to English. That makes it hard for non-English speakers to use it.
Another thing, its browser extensions are only available for Opera Mini and Chrome. So if you use Mozilla, Edge, or Internet Explorer, you’re out of luck.
The good thing is that you can download it on your Windows, Mac, iOS, and Android devices even if you’re unable to use it on your browser.
There are lots of good things about this VPN.
Let’s start with the SurfEasy price. It’s incredibly affordable compared to other solutions on the market.
You also don’t have to worry about data limits with this VPN. That’s because its plans offer unlimited access.
SurfEasy also uses 256-bit AES, military-grade encryption, which the NSA approves as suitable for top-secret confidentiality.
I also came across many other amazing features while compiling this SurfEasy VPN review, such as:
- simultaneous connections
- one-click IP masking
- launch at startup
- reliable speeds
- tracker blocker
- WiFi protection
In a nutshell, this VPN solution is definitely worth a try for basic web anonymity.
