Formerly Full Mesh Networks, WiTopia is a privacy and data security company that has been around since 2003. Short for wired or wireless utopia, WiTopia offers three products, including its own virtual private network service called personalVPN. In this WiTopia VPN review, I’ll discuss what to expect from it.
Launched in 2005, personalVPN has been a media darling. It has graced the pages of paragons of journalism like The New York Times, The Economist, The Wall Street Journal, and the Los Angeles Times.
Renowned tech publications, including GeekWire, ZDNet, and Computerworld, have featured it too.
In 2011, Lifehacker readers voted WiTopia the top VPN service provider. But that was 10 years ago. Since then, the media hype surrounding the brand has cooled.
Independent WiTopia VPN reviews would appear on the internet every now and then. But there wasn’t a single WiTopia VPN review on Trustpilot, G2, and Capterra to this day.
On Google Play, 36 testimonials have given its Android app an average star rating of 3.9.
Less than 40 WiTopia VPN reviews are too few to reflect the sentiment of the service’s entire user base. But then again, the company released this mobile app in May 2020 only. It has only been downloaded more than 5,000 times.
So, does personalVPN still deserve the title of best VPN service in 2021? How does it stack up against the leading VPNs today? Let’s find out!
WiTopia VPN Features
Here’s a primer on personalVPN’s functionality.
WiTopia has native apps for Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android. You can also manually configure it to work with:
- Linux (GNOME-based distributions like Ubuntu and Fedora)
- Amazon FireOS (except for third-generation Fire TV, Fire TV Stick, and Fire TV Cube devices)
- Blackberry (Z, Q, Priev series devices running OS10)
Regarding unmentioned platforms and devices, you can set up personalVPN through a router. If you’re a Premier subscriber, you can enjoy support for the following Asus Wi-Fi routers:
- RT-AC66U (version B1 only)
- RT-AC3200 (one of the best on the market)
- RT-AC1750 (version B1 only)
The only other requirement for this DIY router setup is that the device must be running updated AsusWRT firmware.
If you don’t own any of these supported devices, you can buy or upgrade to the plug-and-play WiTopia VPN Router.
You can choose between CloakBox Asus RT-AC66U B1 AC1750 and CloakBox Pro Asus AC3100/RT-AC88U.
With a VPN-protected router setup, you can secure the traffic of all WiFi-enabled devices in your network. It’s particularly useful for electronics with no compatible native personalVPN client like gaming consoles and many other smart TVs.
Unlimited server switching
You can change your WiTopia VPN server connection as much as you want. This means you can test every location you wish.
This feature doesn’t make personalVPN special, though. I’ve personally reviewed and vetted more or less 20 VPNs and haven’t encountered any with some server switching restriction.
WiTopia doesn’t count data usage, so you can turn it on night and day without worrying about any extra charge. This is good news if you love streaming.
Simultaneous connections on multiple devices
With the WiTopia personal VPN software, you can connect up to eight devices at the same time. It’s more than enough for the average size of two American families.
However, this holds true when you buy the Premier subscription. If you go with either Basic or Pro, you’ll just have five slots in your account.
If you need to secure more than eight devices simultaneously, you can use the VPN-router setup. It should count as one connection only.
WiTopia VPN for Windows and macOS has a kill switch.
This feature helps keep your traffic data secure, and your real IP (internet protocol) address a secret. It can achieve both goals by forcing your device to go offline when your VPN service is unavailable.
WiTopia VPN Advanced Features
If you want to know how to use WiTopia VPN to its full potential, you should also be aware of its extraordinary capabilities. Here they are:
NAT firewall protection
WiTopia provides a NAT (Network Address Translation) firewall at no additional cost. This is not a substitute for your device’s regular firewall. Instead, it serves as an extra layer of defense against black-hat hackers.
PersonalVPN has no malware blocker. But WiTopia VPN firewall protection can help safeguard your network from cyber attacks. It can’t keep ransomware and other types of malware at bay alone. But it can make your network’s security more impregnable.
Unique 4096-bit certificate
WiTopia provides a different 4096-bit certificate per user. This is a departure from the common practice of other VPN vendors.
PersonalVPN supports obfuscation, which may be necessary for places that ban or heavily regulate the use of VPN.
Countries like China, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates are notorious for censorship. Their governments don’t jail VPN users, not yet. But it’s safe to assume that the authorities are keeping a close eye on anyone trying to bypass geo-restrictions.
The obfuscated WiTopia VPN servers can help you keep a low profile. They can disguise your VPN traffic as an ordinary one. This way, your online activity won’t stick out like a sore thumb to avoid drawing the attention of government censors.
WiTopia VPN Servers and Locations
WiTopia’s network covers 43 countries and territories.
In total, it offers 66 locations, and none of them uses virtual servers. It has multiple city options for:
- the United Kingdom
- the United States
WiTopia refuses to disclose how many VPN servers it has exactly. But I did some digging and discovered that it has about 500.
WiTopia’s infrastructure is spread across all continents (except for Antarctica). But the vast majority of it is in Europe and North America as expected. And the greatest variety of IP addresses it provides comes from the US.
With the WiTopia VPN software, you can access nine Asian and two African locations. South America and the Middle East have one location apiece.
WiTopia VPN Speed
From our base in Central Europe, our team tested how fast personalVPN really is. We connected to WiTopia VPN servers in the UK, US, and Australia.
Here’s how much download speed we lost:
- UK: -9.33%
- US: -16.83%
- Australia: -66.67%
We had no complaints. The results were expected: the farther the WiTopia VPN server we connected, the greater speed loss we experienced.
And if your normal, unprotected internet connection is really fast, to begin with, the loss should be negligible. This is even if you choose a personalVPN location on the other side of the planet.
WiTopia VPN Privacy and Jurisdiction
WiTopia’s headquarters are in Reston, Virginia. Being directly under the US jurisdiction is rather unsafe for any VPN vendor.
As we know, Uncle Sam is one of the founding members of the Five Eyes Alliance, which has now evolved into the Fourteen Eyes Alliance. In 2013, documents leaked by the former NSA contractor Edward Snowden exposed this international network invading people’s privacy and exchanging information.
So with enough legal justification, the US government could order WiTopia to share its personalVPN records. And the company has to comply since it must obey US laws.
However, it can’t disclose any data it doesn’t have, begging the question: does WiTopia keep logs?
No, it doesn’t.
WiTopia does collect certain user information for authentication and block unauthorized account access. But it doesn’t monitor the activity of its users. It won’t record the sites you visit and/or the files you download.
If the US government twists WiTopia’s proverbial arm, it won’t be able to squeeze any personalVPN subscriber’s traffic data.
There’s no way to verify the credibility of WiTopia’s zero-log policy, though. It hasn’t followed in the footsteps of some of its competitors like TunnelBear that observe impartial, regular security audits.
To help protect your identity, you can use an alias and an anonymous email when creating your account.
If you’ve been using Blur to obscure your sensitive information, you can use its email masking ability on personalVPN.
WiTopia VPN Security and Protocols
PersonalVPN’s tunneling protocols include the following:
- PPTP (Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol)
- L2TP/IPsec (Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol over Internet Protocol Security)
- IPsec IKEv1 (Internet Key Exchange v1)
- IPSec with IKEv2 (Internet Key Exchange v2)
OpenVPN support is reserved for Pro and Premier subscribers only.
The native WiTopia VPN Mac and PC clients use this protocol by default. On desktop, this protocol uses AES-128. It’s not military-grade. But it’s as resistant to brute-force attacks as AES-256, only that it’s much faster.
The use of AES-128 is akin to the philosophy of PIA.
On WiTopia VPN for Android and iOS, OpenVPN isn’t part of the selection. These WiTopia VPN mobile apps automatically use IKEv2.
You’ll need to download the OpenVPN Connect app to use OpenVPN on mobile. It’s available in Google Play and the App Store.
The OpenVPN Connect determines the default cipher based on what your device can handle. WiTopia has a profile builder, which generates OpenVPN configuration files.
With these files, your mobile device can choose from:
Further, you may be able to use Camellia and/or SEED with OpenVPN if your device supports both or either cipher.
Also, the OpenVPN provides power users with the ability to pick their preferred ports out of 65,000.
Of course, the options to establish UDP (User Datagram Protocol) and TCP (Transmission Control Protocol) connections are available.
If you go with the Basic subscription, the default protocol is IKEv2, which supports AES-256.
With WiTopia’s current implementation of IPSec, AES-256 is the standard.
To provide you with as useful VPN WiTopia review as possible, I should warn you against using PPTP, though. It’s the least secure of the bunch. But if you must, you’d know that it employs RC4 (Rivest Cipher 4), a form of a stream cipher, for encryption. For tunneling, it uses the GRE (Generic Routing Encapsulation) protocol.
WiTopia VPN Leak Test Results
The WiTopia personal VPN software was able to pass IP, DNS, and WebRTC leak tests. With no evidence of leakage, this VPN is a reliable tool for IP masking.
WiTopia VPN and Streaming Services
WiTopia VPN can unblock Netflix US, Hulu, and Amazon Prime Video. You just need to connect to a location that matches the regional content library you wish to access.
However, it couldn’t consistently bypass Netflix’s geo-restrictions.
Many VPN vendors like CyberGhost have a reputation for rendering the geo-blocked content of major streaming platforms (including Disney+) accessible. But WiTopia still needs to do more work to make a name for itself in this area.
The current tech behind personalVPN can’t neutralize all of the curveballs streaming service providers might throw at it.
Due to many variables, the company admits that personalVPN may occasionally fail to break through streaming platforms’ anti-VPN defenses.
The stars have to align for this service to unblock geo-censored media whose license holder is seriously countering VPN connections.
How Good Is WiTopia VPN for Torrenting?
The WiTopia VPN app won’t break into our latest roundup of the best VPNs for torrenting any time soon.
WiTopia won’t stop you from downloading any torrent, nor will it track your P2P (peer-to-peer) file-sharing activity. Still, there is no dedicated WiTopia VPN torrent downloading protections.
If you can’t access a torrenting site with personalVPN on, it only means that the site is blocked for abuse.
Can WiTopia VPN Bypass Geoblocks?
Yes, it can.
As mentioned, it didn’t leak my actual IP address. So, it was able to spoof my location. Because of this, I was able to access sites I normally couldn’t visit from my region.
The geo-restrictions you can defeat would depend on personalVPN’s list of locations. At the moment, it’s not a lot. And its global network hasn’t expanded noticeably. From June 2020 to August 2021, WiTopedia’s selection grew by one country only.
Ease of Use
The web-based WiTopia dashboard is a one-stop-shop for personalVPN. It has the download links for WiTopia VPN for Mac and PC. It’s where you’d go to get your hands on OpenVPN configuration files.
Moreover, current personalVPN clients look sleek and are devoid of cumbersome elements.
WiTopia VPN reviews from years past criticized the quasi-interactive map and large icons of the old user interface. This overhaul is proof that the software’s developers do listen to feedback.
Thanks to key aesthetic changes, personalVPN has become more intuitive than ever.
With it, you can quickly connect to the fastest WiTopia VPN server. If you want to use your preferred location, you can easily do so at the touch of a button.
Casual users can appreciate the basic utility of personalVPN, despite not offering exciting functionalities like double VPN and split tunneling. But only the subscribers with technical knowledge can see the value in its stellar configurability.
Is WiTopia VPN a good VPN services provider?
Functionalities aside, what makes WiTopia stand out is the quality of its customer support. The company doesn’t outsource this aspect of its business. And I could tell that its in-house representatives were highly competent.
I reached out to the team on three separate occasions and got to speak with three different chat reps. I never had to wait for more than a minute to get assistance.
Apart from being super responsive, all of the agents I talked to didn’t beat around the bush. They gave straight relevant answers and could read between the lines.
Although I chose to engage with sales reps, none of them tried to upsell the WiTopia VPN software. It’s refreshing for a VPN company not to use any sales pitch when given a chance.
Other than providing round-the-clock chat support, WiTopia has dedicated emails for different departments. Its site has a collection of helpful setup guides for different supported devices and platforms.
Surprisingly, the company’s Blog and FAQ sections weren’t that impressive. The former is barely empty, and the latter absurdly lacks reads for some of the topics it recommends.

All non-monthly personalVPN plans are fully refundable for 30 days with no questions asked.
In terms of payment, you can purchase a subscription with your debit card, PayPal, Visa, Mastercard, American Express, or Discover.
Some personalVPN plans are set to auto-renew after the end of their term. But you can opt-out of recurring billing during checkout.
Notably, there’s no WiTopia VPN-free version. And you won’t find a WiTopia VPN trial either.
Unfortunately, the company erroneously calls its money-back guarantee a free trial. They’re not the same. A money-back guarantee requires an upfront payment, whereas a free trial doesn’t.
Usually, a free trial only involves account registration. Sometimes, payment information is a requisite for it.
Either way, its provider shouldn’t charge you beforehand. It should bill you only if you don’t cancel the service before it expires.
WiTopia VPN Review – Verdict
PersonalVPN wouldn’t have lasted for over 15 years without doing something well.
This software’s range of compatibility can rival those of many of the more popular VPNs on the market. Its chat support is best-in-class.
PersonalVPN isn’t feature-packed. But its obfuscation tech lends more credibility to its usefulness in private browsing, especially in controlling countries and territories.
There’s a reason why WiTopia isn’t making a lot of noise about its torrenting capabilities, though.
Offering no WiTopia VPN trial means that the company isn’t interested in increasing its user base at all costs. Rather, WiTopia wants to appeal only to those who appreciate what it brings to the table.
It’s confident that those who truly understand its functionalities wouldn’t mind paying a premium for some of its plans.
After all, most personalVPN subscriptions aren’t a total gamble. WiTopia’s unconditional 30-day money-back guarantee should help ease any qualms you may have.
If you need a robust VPN just for private browsing, strongly consider personalVPN.
PersonalVPN, WiTopia’s virtual private network, has aesthetically improved of late. Its user interface has become more intuitive and familiar.
Nevertheless, this VPN service isn’t among the best for streaming. WiTopia hasn’t made a considerable effort to extend solid support to torrenters, either.
Its best use is for private browsing, especially in areas where online censorship is rampant.
There are six ways to set up personalVPN on an iOS-powered device. But the most recommended one is to download WiTopia’s native app from the App Store.
With a paid subscription, you should be able to set up WiTopia VPN for iPhone in a straightforward way.
If you see the message “connection is not reachable,” then something went wrong with the installation. You have to redo it and strictly follow the specific setup instructions for your device or operating system.
If that doesn’t do the trick, your device’s firewall or security program could be the culprit.
If you don’t know where to go from here, contact WiTopia’s customer support. They’ll be happy to help.
No, it doesn’t.
The company collects aggregated anonymous usage data, though.
