With your system running Windows 10, you’ve probably seen some strange processes running in the background.

When you boot up your PC, many system processes work in tandem to provide a smooth experience. They use graphical, CPU, and memory usage to deliver normal computing functions.

One of them is Yourphone.exe.

In this article, we’ll discuss what Yourphone.exe is and do you really need it.

Let’s find out!

What Is Yourphone.exe?

First things first.

Yourphone.exe is a product of the new Your Phone app, an inbuilt program in Windows 10. If your PC runs an older version of the OS, you probably won’t have it.

Basically, it allows you to synchronize operations and functionality.

If you’re an Android user, you’re gonna need Android 7 and above. If you own an iOS device, you won’t be able to get the most out of the app, without installing Microsoft Edge. Otherwise, you’ll be able to only share browser links.

Thanks to the app, you can receive calls, check your messages, share fiiles and more right from your PC. This is especially useful for folk who find themselves frequently multitasking.

After syncing your mobile device with the Your Phone app, the yourphone process begins to run perpetually in the background. Both your devices have to exchange notifications to function optimally constantly.

Now that we have established what the Your Phone app does, let us move to another section to answer the question:

Is Yourphone.exe Process a Virus?

Yourphone.exe is not a virus. It is a legitimate Windows 10 process, a function of the new Your Phone app that’s running in the background.

It can, however, use a lot of CPU.

But don’t worry. You can disable it.

How to Stop the YourPhone.exe Process from Running in the Background?

There are three simple ways to stop the yourphone process. Here are your options:

How to Disable YourPhone.exe from Settings

The YourPhone.exe process launches from the minute that you boot up your PC. If you want to disable this function, this is what you have to do:

  • Navigate to the Start Menu.
  • In the empty field, search, and click on Settings.
  • From the Window Settings, click on Privacy.
  • Then tap on Background apps dashboard to the left of the screen.

From here, you can view all of the sotware that run in the background. Some of these are inbuilt Windows programs, such as Your Phone.

After locating the Your Phone app, tap the corresponding slider to disable it, switching it Off.

Voila - it won’t run in the background anymore. When next you boot up your PC, you won’t see it in the Task Manager.

This is handy if you don’t use the app at all. If you change your mind later on, you can launch it normally.

How to Disable YourPhone.exe with Windows PowerShell

Merely disabling the YourPhone.exe process on your Windows 10 device will not be enough if you want to get rid of the app entirely.

Here’s the thing:

Yourphone.exe is an inbuilt Windows program. So, it is never ideal to remove it this way.

But it is perfectly safe to do so, as it isn’t a core program. Here’s how:

Navigate to the Start Menu Search, click on Windows PowerShell, and open as administrator in the empty field.

Here, you will need to run a command code to force-stop the yourphone.exe process. It is Get-AppxPackage Microsoft.YourPhone -AllUsers | Remove-AppxPackage

Press Enter and if successful, you will see no confirmation on the Windows PowerShell administrator.

Thereafter, you can navigate to the C:\Program Files\WindowsApps\ folder and delete the installation files for the Your Phone app. Look for another one whose name starts with Microsoft .YourPhone and press Delete.

If this isn’t working, there’s a simple command you can enter onto the Windows PowerShell console. It goes like this:

Remove-Item -path “C:\Program Files\WindowsApps\Microsoft.YourPhone_1.20081.117.0_x64__8wekyb3d8bbwe.

Press Enter.

Afterwards, you can substitute the Microsoft.YourPhone path with the corresponding path in your hard drive. Then, press Y to delete.

If you have done all this, and the files are still present, you can insert -Force as a command suffix to remove them all.

How to Disable YourPhone.exe from the Windows Task Manager

The Windows Task Manager is a handy tool to view apps running in the background, such as the Microsoft Yourphone.exe. To temporarily disable it, you have to:

  • Navigate to the Start Menu and search for Windows Task Manager. Another way to open the task manager is to click on Ctrl + Shift + Esc
  • Locate Your Phone.
  • Right-click on it, and tap on End Task

Until you manually open the app, you won’t get any notifications.

Wrap Up

Several Windows 10 processes are vital to the smooth running of your PC, so you should be careful when deleting them. However, temporarily disabling the Yourphone.exe process is quite safe, as it isn’t a key cog of system operations.

Is YourPhone safe?

  • ending the process in Task Manager

  • running the appropriate command on Windows PowerShell

Why is YourPhone running in the background?
